  • that pandora is junk

  • The Open-Pandora is available from the official website (google it) and all of it's games and programs are run from SD cards. You just place games in particular folders on the cards, pop them into your Pandora and they will appear in the start menu and on the desktop, ready to run.

As for what games run on it, the Pandora can emulate pretty much everything up to the N64 and has a large homebrew community. It also can run almost any open source game and can play GP32 games thanks to GINGE.

  • this thing is really cool

  • having a handheld dreamcast emulator would be awesome, but the design is so damn fugly

  • screw psp, and ds i want this thing full speed n64,psx, and dreamcast emulation what next gamecube(we can hope)i need one, you know what would be cool, since i have a tethered jailbroken ipod i wonder if i could run blackra1n on the pandora

  • Finally something capable of emulating the dreamcast perfectly

  • if they could add a phone to it and decrease the girth of it a bit, i think it would sell billions, but i would get one just because of the dreamcast emulator

  • does anyone know if you can go on the internet with the pandora?

  • @blbeau yes you can

  • Yes, it has Wi-Fi, and it should be able to tether to some cell phones and use their data plan.

All standard web features like Javascript, CSS, etc. will work, but Java applets are uncertain and Flash is not going to work until Adobe stops being dicks and releases an ARM version / their source code.

  • @cyborgtroy

I was able to get youtube working on my ( now stolen) HTC Titan, which had an Xscale compatible cpu. Skyfire and Opera Mini both supported it through the browser, so they had to have some kind of Flash player capability.

  • @Scioneer - Great, but I don't think that code is available for the Pandora, which also doesn't have Skyfire or Opera.

  • I want it so bad. I would go atheist for one of those man.

  • @LinkDaHylian5002 do you even know what atheist means ?

  • lmfao...

  • @FadeToBlack181: Yes, which is why it's funny.

  • There is absolutely no competition between the iPhone and the Pandora. In every single statistic that matters, the pandora wins. Additionally, 2x the capacity, a much better screen, and the ability to swap memory cards as much as you want makes this a no-brainer for the less appearence driven among us :)

  • OMG!!! look at his laptop!! What's the name of it??

  • it's a MacBook

  • pandora owns

    no competitor

  • where i can get OMAP3????

  • its the same design with some extra's

  • Lol the nds stay off because it is jealous XD

  • its not much larger than the original DS yet it can be used as a netbook too

  • if that thing can fit in my pockets, and if my school has a free electronics's day ill take that out and play it.

  • when it does come out, will there be limited amounts that you have to pre-order to secure your purchase or will there be a lot in stock at the electronic stores. Wait, does it even come out in stores or do you have to buy it online?

  • not in stores,

it set for release of 2009

preorders have already been sold out for the first production.

i think these will be pretty limited, so the resellers will sell them for a lot more than their original price.

  • i really would love this to be available offline

  • In several years, how many of these will have been made? Am I ever going to be able to get one, without jumping through hoops?

  • several thousand.

Yes, through the online store. They'll probably stock a few once production gets going and they can afford to keep a few.

  • ?

    I don't get it.

  • it seems like a good design and its not too bulky, but im not sure if i like the placement of the joysticks

  • i agree

  • what in the name of god is a pandora???

  • somebody introduce this man to google

    -_-

  • lol

  • watch tfv.

  • what games can u play with pandora?

  • from first console gen hopefully up to dreamcast

  • It's not really about the games, man.

And it's not so much a "professional" game console either.

It's about coding your own games/programs and running them on a compact portable device.

  • And about having a tiny computer in your pocket.

The Pandora can replace my watch, my PDA, and, for anything below games and high-def image editing, my laptop.

It just does everything that the DS should have been doing this whole time.

  • Games up to n64 and of course all the fun user driven homebrew games!

  • It can barely emulate the basic N64 games, but homebrew games won't have to fuck around with emulation, they'll have iPhone 3GS-level power to play around with.

  • oooooooooow, sorry, now i see, first i dought its was a older version of the ds or somethink X_X

    cool

  • @ computercomplott, its a fucking prototype

  • The pandora will be much better than the ds. Its like a laptop and DS combined. And that is just a prototype. I can't wait for the real thing. I've been tracking its progress for a while.

  • i want it

    NOW

  • whoever is saying that the ds is better is sorely mistaken. This amazing piece of technology has dual core, and can play up to ps2 games. HD quality, touch screen, keyboard, wifi, usb, open source... basically an extremely cool mini pc.

  • I don't remember it having a dual core. I tohught it had an ARM clocked at 800 MHz. And on the website it says it can only play up to PSX games, and it possibly will NOT be able to emulate even the Dreamcast. And the screen size and pixel count could hardly be described as HD quality.

Either way, it's a cool little open source machine, and I def. want one.

  • DS isn't open source.

    So, HA!

  • at first i wanted a Pandora. but then i heard about DSi. for some reason i say the DSi is an epic fail. i will stick with my DS Lite and buy a Pandora.

  • Yeah, the DSi sucks hairy nutsack compared to pandora and DS lite/normal ds. Seeing as DSi lacks many things such as slot 2. Also DSi is a gay sister product like the micro so suck crap sonic5130306 (fuckin too many numbers in your name)

  • LOL u mad me fucking laugh still i laughing roflma when u said fucking too many numbers so hilarious lol u ma boii

  • no, but it has a potential to

  • It would be quite akward as well

  • weird. Who knew that the joysticks glowed?

  • Hmm, I don't think they glow. It's probably the reflection of the screen.

  • Really looks like it's glowing, but yeah I think it is just the reflection. Can't wait for mine to arrive :D

  • It looks incredibly awesome, but it's too damn expensive. I would buy one otherwise.

  • Expensive? It's a reasonable low price... if you consinder you're not forced to buy expensive games and you can do almost anything on a regular minilaptop

  • wat is to expensive?

  • $380 (CAN) is too damn expensive.

  • But 250 euro isn't really that much, your currency is just inflated. Since they are funding it themselves they really can't go after the regular "same number for everybody" figure. That makes steam games really cheap for me too =D.

  • thats not bad at all i would buy one of these in an instant

  • Your screen looks a little banged up :P

I'm really loving how midgety the Pandora makes the DS screen look.

And keyboard=win. Seriously, this is potentially the ultimate form of portable Angband.

  • It still has the screen protection film on. I think it's off now that I am making more than slide show videos :)

  • I see strong potential for music creators with the keyboard and pads.

  • holy crap... you're right i didn't even think of that! ok now, I'm deffinantly gettin one! Thanks for the idea! : D

  • how can i afford all these handhelds that the gp2x team is spitting out!!!

  • umm....there is now 3.

  • hmm wow my only worry was that it was too big and bulky in the pics, but looking at this it actually seems pretty decent size. I think i might pick one up.

  • no ur just gonna look at it and not pick it up

  • I'd like to know the music playing in this as well.

  • yeaahhh... you haven't. The Pandora is going to be so cool!

    *head pops.* ...very exiting.

  • this is the best damn thing ever invented!!!

does anyone know the name of the song?

  • no you haven't

  • You REALLY haven't, unless you're from the future.

This device is going to rock.

  • how do i buy this?

  • How do games even work?!

  • You use emulation to play PSone, GBA, PSP, N64, SNES and NES games downloaded

  • not really there is a very high chance that all of them might get sold

  • HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IWANTONE!

I hope it will be less than 300 in US. although a 10 to 30 dollar swing is ok.

  • you are in luck, its going at $330

  • yeah, in the UK..

  • no, in america.

In the UK its being sold at £199

  • sweet. it's a bit mor than an iPod touch, cuz i was looking both. i might want this...

  • PSP takes too many years to load and is not very powerful.

  • How did you get a prototype?

  • As long as it runs linux, I'm most likely going to buy one.

  • If this thing can emulate psone, I'm sold. The previous gp2x f200 could emulate genesis, nes, segacd, mame, snes, the works, so I can't wait to see what this thing can do!

  • well the pandora is a lot more powerfull than the psp

  • True, but he said "if he can emulate psone"

we can do that on the psp...

but yea, obviously this is more powerful. and i likes

  • ummm will be showing final units mid august at tech shows...

  • The MASSIVE screen has to go somewhere!

  • it is a developer unit the final design will be trimed down check the site in late august for the final design (they are taking it to some tech shows)

  • can i get one of the developers edition?

  • Craig...keeping the Amiga spirit alive! :)

I'll be ordering one of these babies as soon as they're available

  • I can't wait for one of these to come out. I hope it has a cradle like the GP2X or something like that to connect controlers and TV out. Just one thing I've noticed. The pandora has only one pair of shoulder buttons, L1 and R1. They say it can emulate Playstations and the last time I checked, the playstation had two pair of shoulder buttons, L1, L2, R1 and R2. Will it have other buttons to use for the L2 and R2 instead?

  • isnt it the same when u hold select and press l1 or r1 4 the ps1

  • is has a USB port ...plug up any PC controler that is Linux compatible also some controlers *may* work with the bluetooth chip but that is a big maybe

  • Man, those nubs sure were sexy. Too bad they won't come with the final product

  • Did I spy a Gen5 Archos in that vid? Possibly a 605

  • If this thing actually gets released and costs less than $400 as they say it will, I'd buy two of them.

  • pandora´s system is linux ;)

  • you're an idiot ^^

  • will the pandora have a cradle for multiplayer that can connect to a television

  • the pandora will have TV out but not HD both the LCD and TV out can display independently the TV out is avilable through a custom cable similar in appearance to one of the smaller style usb ports

  • it will be released. developers can get one already.

retail? august is all they are saying at this time.

  • Are it's specs upgradeable in anyway though?

  • The price is a little high. But i'll save money.

    It worths it.

Holyshit! Opensource gaming device, customizable firmware, shitload of emulators and opensource software. Linux OS and of course good ol' gcc. Imagine the potential.

Behold the power of open source!

  • i cant believe the joysticks light up with different colors that looks incredible it could be a health gage in a game going from green to red

  • They don't light up, they are just reflective.

  • The joysticks don't actually light up - it's just the room is dark and there's a reflective surface around the joysticks. Still, if it does it while playing in the dark it still looks cool. I can't wait for this thing to be released, I've had my money saved for it since December!

  • When will these be released already?

  • July most likely.

  • august

  • Yes andri12 correct.

  • Me want mooooore XD :P

Can i use Wine on it????

  • nope.

  • Can this run games like system shock 2 or half life 1??

  • If someone port them, then yes. It is comparable in hardware power to an iPhone and an iPhone can run Quake3, which is much more demanding than either HalfLife1 and SS2.

  • They have different processors mhz dont count for shit. i(phone) gaming UMMMM nice.

  • They have the same ARM11 CPU architecture manufactured by different Vendors (ARM is an intellectual property company and doesn't manufacture themselves).

MHz does matter when comparing the same architecture.

The iPhone has an PowerVR MBX GPU, Pandora an more powerful PowerVR SGX GPU, so if it runs on the iPhone it is feasable on the more powerfull Pandora.

If that wasn't enough to convince, the SOC that pandora is using, the OMAP3430, was already demonstrated running Q3 on Linux.

  • nop nop the OMAP3430 in pandora use arm Cortex CPU architecture core which is next gen arm architecture after the ARM11 CPU architecture

it has lot more performans than a ARM11 core

  • Thx for pointing that out. My bad, thought it was still an ARM11.

  • only if the source code is released

if the source code is released then we can count on half-life, counter-strike, team fortress classic, etc

  • What is the song of the video? Sounds great!

  • It's calles "Musclecars".

By Mylo. Look for his Album "Destroy Rock and Roll".

  • Muscle Cars by Mylo.

  • Very cool tune.

  • This is a heroe's quest. Mweston and Craigix are paladins. :)

  • I feel like I'm being watched by a cat in the night.

  • OMG ITS SO SEXY!!! i want i want

  • ME WANT

  • What's the name of the song in the video. Sounded like it was getting better towards the middle. :-)

  • PROPS to you guys, well done

  • omg it's almost here! *jumps for joy* :]

  • i can see this pwn everything available as soon as the general public knows of its existence!

  • Will someone please explain to a n00b like me what this is?

  • It's the prototype of a new open source handheld device created by the lead players in the GP2X/GP32 scene. Its a linux

The reflective surface under the joysticks is a nice touch by the way.

congratulations to Craigix, DaveC, DJWillis, Ed, Fatih, Michael, Squidge and any others involved for making the design become a reality.

  • I really should learn to proof read and not wonder off half way through a sentence.

  • wow the joystick looks likes eyes

  • Does anyone know the artist and song title for the song they use?

  • robbolo it is called muscles cars by mylo

  • Finally, the real deal! A REAL Pandora!

Wow, i just might get one...too bad i live in Canada, i guess thats what eBay is for right!

  • WIN!

  • this is SO AWESOME

  • It's beautiful...[wipes tear from eye].
