Many marriages were loveless, and plagued by adultery and domestic abuse. Not to mention a man of such high rank would almost never marry a woman of such inferior birth. It would simply be too much of a social stigma upon the family name which mattered above all else to the aristocracy.
Jane Austin created a dream with her work. Watch the movies about her life - she never did marry =) Such is sometimes the fate of a romantic.
I love this movie, and book, and I also agree wholeheartedly about the beauty of the 1800s society. I can relate to the LiketheHylianHero poster in saying that I often wished to be born then. The European language and manner were, values, culture... are irreplaceable However, the women's position was far from what these movies and romantic novels portray. Very rarely did they have the luxury of marrying for love, and most of the marriages were arranged based on fortunes and family connections
cello and piano..to me,it's like master marianelli gave lizzy and darcy an actual voice in this dance..listen how they yell and then whisper to each other..so different, yet, so harmonically perfect together..
I reaaaally love this film, it really makes the part of me that's "romantic and old-fashioned" happy. I sometimes wish we could let go off the physical part of love, but our human nature has decided differently... and we are in a time when we are encouraged to let our bodies talk!
the thing that would ever prevent me from wanting to grow up in that time period would be how woman were oppressed to marry as their only vital task as social class was everything. I understand how it happened like that...but I still wish I could have lived in Jane Austen's world.
I will always love this movie..and this story...amazing to still find myself a romantic after 3 grown children and married for over 20yrs...the music beyond beautiful..
erm, this is actually based in the 19th century. regardless, i doubt there will ever be such a thing of beauty like the love that is shown between lizzie and f. darcy.
Okay, as much as I love this movie, all the assertions within these comments of how women were so much more respected in a society where they could not vote and where marriages were often more of an economic agreement than a loving contract gets on my nerves. My knowledge from the past comes from history books, not fictional works. I'm not about to claim that women were more loved back then because of images show in Austen's novels. How could you know? Were you there?
@JoycelynAnnette It's practically historical fiction though, because it is a story written in olden times, and in those times those were the customs and ways of the world. SO, it is a literary account of history.
that's what any novel that was written back in time is... a fictional account of how their world, and the people in their world behaved...
@beabeababy123 Though that's true, Austen's works are pretty far-fetched. The whole reason these novels are so appealing is that they are unlikely, they are fanasy. A clever girl of little fortune ends up with the rich man of great character. That isn't how it normally happened. And having read a lot of older fiction, especially that written by males, women weren't exactly celebrated during those times. A woman's worth often depended on her looks and virginity. I don't envy that.
@beabeababy123 And, I don't mean to say all my cultural history comes from fiction, as that is exactly what I'm trying to discourage. However, since you used a fictional example, I decided to just say how this fiction of this era wasn't all like Austen's. These creations of the past weren't as glowing and positive as Pride and Prejudice. Looking at a history book, it is clear that women were more confined than they were today. We're still confined, but I would argue it's better.
How do you KNOW that that was all that happened back then? it would make sense for them to have those dramatic little liaisons if they had nothing better to do than sit inside and sew... they may have LOOKED serene, but no human can live a life that is utterly tranquil and dull. Whether they're woman or not.
And it seemed as if the only way that females could have ANY sort of excitement whatsoever was through a romantic relationship....
@beabeababy123 I don't pretend that I lived centuries ago. And my main point is that people shouldn't think they did either just because they have watched Pride and Prejudice. I don't think that I know of every specific detail of the past, but judging by the work of dedicated researches, women in that era were not allowed much freedom in terms of jobs, sex, property, marriage, etc. So it frustrates me that people say they envy that time when they really just envy this fictional romance.
@JoycelynAnnette Actually, if you looked into the actual history you'd see it as well. Yes, it's true that some women were degraded and looked down upon. But it seemed to be a mutual agreement. Men loved to be the support in the family, to hold his woman up. But at the same time, men felt power. They knew they had just as much power over their women as they had love. History has always grasped my interest, especially in this era. You don't have to have lived in the time to look up the facts.
@JoycelynAnnette I agree with you entirely. I love Pride and Prejudice - the book and the movie - but it's not a very plausible plot. Actually, Austen was the "founder" of the plot where "girl gets guy not because she's hot but because of her wit and etc.", which has now evolved into the cliche plot that everyone uses in online fiction. This is not a historical documentation, but a work of literary fiction.
I love all of the music from this movie....so moving, rich and full of emotion. What I would give to find a man that would woe me with loving words as Darcy did....I love this movie with every inch of my being.
This track is simply amazing. Yet another song Dario Marianelli composes beautifully, the story it convey is too much for words. Why is it that men can't be like Mr Darcy ugh i wish i was alive back then just to get the love and respect that Jane Austen illustrates throughout her books particular this one
Ive met a woman that i grow to cherrish everyday..... I love every moment we share together. To hear her laugh, to see her smile make my heart smile. I thank God for every breath she takes and for opening my eyes to her. Right when i needed her, she was there.
it is good that we should possess feminism but on the other hand we have lost the passionate love between two binary sexes.
ıf we meet somebody for their body then we should forget about immortal romantic love.of course! sex is vital component of love but if we dont put love on the initial side then we can never get the taste of real love.
i think my favorite part is the beginning. It's so intense and passionate. I sometimes wish I could be born in those times. They were simpler, and classier, and it wasn't all about sex. It was about true, innocent love.
@XXsmswacXX no obviously it wasn't because her friend married someone she didn't love. and her mother wanted her to mary that man she didn't care for, knowing she wanted mr. darcy
@XXsmswacXX Actually, in those times I don't think it was so much a matter of love as "marrying well". Women were expected to marry someone at least equal to or higher than their social "station". I don't mean to burst your bubble or anything, because it seems like a nice idea, and this is a beautiful story and film, it's just not realistic :)
actually, it wasn't as it is portrayed in the movies...if you wanted that life you had to be rich, so you should say i wish i could go back to that time and be well-off...not to mention the fact that if you were a woman your prospects were limited, to say the least. i have to agree with most of you... i often tell my sister that i feel like a stranger in this century that i was born in...i feel like i belong there, i love this kind of movies the dresses they way you fell in love, the innosence and purity of it. I wish our world could go back to times like these
omg yeah same here.. dresses, elegance and being taught to play remarkable instruments liek the harp and the violin and the piano :) btw how old was keira knightly in this film?
thanks for this!i think so too!those people had more respect from each other and i think the love was so great! and i love the dresses, the hair and the way they dance :)
as i saw the film i would go back to this time... real love ... and the other things... i like the feeling.. and the houses and the balls... and the big houses of the famouse people to this time.. like pemberly or the other... the accommodation of the rooms... and all the other things ... i wish i can go back...
I really do have to agree with you, LinktheHylianHero. It is a shame what these days have become like, with such drama and war and how everything is so modern. I can't stand the music people play nowadays, either. Like pop and everything. This is the kind of music I think people should be listening to more often instead of filling our heads with this other pop and modern-music nonsense. I have such a passion for the 18th century as well. If only we could go back to those days again.
I love this soundtrack, the story, the movie and the performances!!! Everything is just wonderful and beautifully done. I love Jane Austens roman and the director really had done a wonderful job. It has to be one of my favorite movies!!!!
i have such a passion for the 18th century. how the men stood up when a woman entered the room. how they all removed their hats. and the language was so... amazing. i get caught up in it and i wish i was born then. i would walk around doing these things if it wouldnt look so stupid now.
@LinktheHylianHero ME TOO! I love the victorian era and a little before that also. I wish men were more like they used to be, respectful, and not so pushy. I love the way they spoke also!!
@FancyFarrah It's sad how much we've lost after all these years. All because of the equality between men and women now. Yes, it's nice that women can vote and such. But rights and politeness are two different things. It seems that men feel they don't have to hold doors open for ladies anymore because they're on the same level. No wonder women have lost respect for men.
@LinktheHylianHero Do it anyway. We should live like this, but it is possible that I am in my own little fantasy world, where within it there lives Anne Shirley, and so many more characters that I call people in which I wish were alive, for they helped me. Men removed their hats because it was showing respect to those who bore babies, those who kept house. Women only had to look up to their husbands in times of trouble and despair.

@LinktheHylianHero YES!!! that´s EXACTLY what i think.. i like it so much!!! and it´s not so serious then cuz they could pick a wife or a husband they love... and i like the dancing! you know exactly how to dance and almost everybody is dancing and it seems like so much fun!!!! i just can´t explain how great i think it is (especially not in english, cuz i´m german :))....... LOVE IT!
@LinktheHylianHero Not just the men. Women were beautiful, the way they dressed and wore their hair. The way they carried themselves with dignity. They took pride in being feminine and beautiful. Their beauty was their empowerment. They didn't need feminism. They still accomplished many things, were very knowledgeable of the world, cultured and talented, and yet they still held their husbands and families above all else.
This is the best movie. The music, the acting, everything about it compells me. It's so beautiful and romantic. I wish the guys in this day and time were more like Mr. Darcy: silent, serious, yet tender and gentle, and loving. Oh well....
Many marriages were loveless, and plagued by adultery and domestic abuse. Not to mention a man of such high rank would almost never marry a woman of such inferior birth. It would simply be too much of a social stigma upon the family name which mattered above all else to the aristocracy.

This is the best movie. The music, the acting, everything about it compells me. It's so beautiful and romantic. I wish the guys in this day and time were more like Mr. Darcy: silent, serious, yet tender and gentle, and loving. Oh well....
