What are you talking about? The Muppet Show lasted 5 years and was incredibly popular... Jim Henson only decided to move on to other things and ended the show himself.

He was probably trying not to break his neck. In order to get the right levels, the "star" was often walking on a platform with the puppeteers standing lower.
