Screamer- sort of catch that can change a game! Unbelievable that is freakishly amazing. He's a freak Paul Collingwood, an absolute freak. I've never seen him drop a sitter or misfield. Collingwood and Rhodes go down as the best two fielders to have ever played the game- so far. ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!
I'm an Aussie and I think Collingwood has taken some of the most spectacular catches in history.
IIRC, he took another one against Australia at second slip that was better than this.
He was diving lengthways to his right (RHB) almost before the ball had hit the bat.
Mike Veletta took a catch in the covers in the late '80s that was the only thing I've seen that was even comparable to Collingwood, but Collingwood has done stuff like this on several occasions.
Along with John Dyson's catch in the outfield at the SCG, this is a spectacular catch. I saw Dean Jones take a stunner at 4th slip that was as good as both of these. One of the best catches I ever saw was Roger Harper at gully catching Alan Border who absolutely hammered a square cut. The ball was going like a rocket and Harper just jumps in the air like Michael Jordon and plucks it out of the air as easy as can be.
This catch has everything for me. Its the way he manages to position his body, his reflexes, and the way he anticipates where the ball is going. There are some other great catches out there, but i think this is the best. Most of the other ones (outfield catches) are photograph moments: when the ball is at a convienient height for the players to dive and make the catch look better than what it was. They are great catches, but the truly great catches are done in the slip and gully positions.
"fluke reflex" Do you understand what a 'reflex' is? He has trained his 'reflexes' to do that kind of movement at backward point. So no, it isn't a fluke.
wow i don't watch cricket at all but I appreciate an athletic ability when I see it and the way one twists his/her body in mid air is a true testament to his/her athletic prowess. That is spectacular, as the guy said.
