They rely on the government for the education because they are in public schools! That's why, and it still holds true, I'm a witness to it. I moved around a lot in South Carolina, the government favors the white majority schools over the black majority schools. I've been to schools that I had to copy the questions off the board, for tests because there was no paper/copier for the teachers. While this may seem harmless, a student who couldn't afford eye glasses struggled!

My co worker and friend feared for her son everyday until she managed to move out. He had real parents (plural) and was required to put school first. He graduated with distinguished honors and is now attending college where he continues to do well. He went to the same crappy school as the walking paychecks but managed to do better.
She rightly complained that welfare recipients made more money than she did, yet said the outcome of an honest working family was a child with a real future.

What we need is a public school system that works. However, I went to a good public high school and saw plenty of kids waste their opportunities, so committment from the individual is also required. So both parents and teachers need to step up and work together.

I agree with you. I do think, however, that these kids have failed to realize that at a very young age. Maybe they didn't grow up in a very supportive environment, or maybe their priorities were different when they were younger so that when they got to high school they began to realize that education is more important than they ever realized.

It is true, people shouldn't depend so much on the government but people have different beliefs as to whom and where they can find support. That's why people who have knowledge and resources should be a little open about helping people if you can and if the person can use it and will hopefully appreciate it. A lot of people are out for themselves and neglect people who need things to progress. They're trying and just asking for help. It doesn't have to be the President but someone can help them.
Not everyone has the resources or the knowledge of where some resources are like computers,etc if there's no good library around. Plus some people don't know about the internet, don't know how to use it, even to this day. We all grow up differently and are granted different things so we can't assume that they have what they need. Some people also need an extra push to find it on their own and some people don't. Not everyone is the same, life isn't the same all around.

This is not just about teachers believing in students. It's about parents believing. It's about members of our society believeing and becoming mentors. It's about students believing in themselves. What do you believe?

Well said, this is exactly the problem. A black female co worker of mine said exactly the same thing regarding the warzone she had finally managed to move out of.
Her neighbors were nearly all single mothers who were getting paid to reproduce. The neighborhood was terrorized by walking paychecks.
She had one child while married, but had divorced when her son was 13. She and her husband worked, the husband continued to be a father after the divorce. He is now 19 and attending college.

My co worker and friend feared for her son everyday until she managed to move out. He had real parents (plural) and was required to put school first. He graduated with distinguished honors and is now attending college where he continues to do well. He went to the same crappy school as the walking paychecks but managed to do better.
She rightly complained that welfare recipients made more money than she did, yet said the outcome of an honest working family was a child with a real future.

What we need is a public school system that works. However, I went to a good public high school and saw plenty of kids waste their opportunities, so committment from the individual is also required. So both parents and teachers need to step up and work together.

What I got out of this video is, that if others care then these students will care...big, big mistake. These students need to stop feeling sorry for themselves and do what they want to do. I left my neighborhood at 18 and joined the military, I wasn't worried about what anyone thougth, I wasn't going to wait for someone to tell me how I should feel or live. When you let others put limits on you then you're not serious about your future. Care about you and don't rely on anyone, including Obama.

I agree with you. I do think, however, that these kids have failed to realize that at a very young age. Maybe they didn't grow up in a very supportive environment, or maybe their priorities were different when they were younger so that when they got to high school they began to realize that education is more important than they ever realized.

fortunately my mother had family that gave her a pass out of that hell. I left when I was 13 years old, a month before i left my best friend was murdered in her house due to gang affiliation she was 14 years old. My closest circle of friends were jumped into gangs shortly after starting high school. It is true, people shouldn't depend so much on the government but people have different beliefs as to whom and where they can find support. That's why people who have knowledge and resources should be a little open about helping people if you can and if the person can use it and will hopefully appreciate it. A lot of people are out for themselves and neglect people who need things to progress. They're trying and just asking for help. It doesn't have to be the President but someone can help them.

Not everyone has the resources or the knowledge of where some resources are like computers,etc if there's no good library around. Plus some people don't know about the internet, don't know how to use it, even to this day. We all grow up differently and are granted different things so we can't assume that they have what they need. Some people also need an extra push to find it on their own and some people don't. Not everyone is the same, life isn't the same all around.

Sometimes it really is the teachers fault though. Some teachers don't teach their students to learn and dream beyond what they see in their homes and on the streets. Teachers have more influence than they may think. They should feel free to use that influence beyond teaching the assigned curriculum, but rather showing the students the positive attributes of living life to better their own future.
