Ok in 1989 Disney apeealed to kids by creating musicals such as the Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beat now Disney is a different company that cares very much about money and comes out with films such as Cars 2, Ratatoullie, Princess and the Frog, and Pirates 3...DO I EVEN HAVE TO SAY WHICH ERA OF DISNEY IS BETTER!?!
@robirdsfilmmaker this era is better your right, but if disney made more hand drawn films disney could go back to the way it was, I'm sure they'll go back eventually as they make more hand drawn films and get back to their roots, i know this cus i heard that their going back to hand drawn animation, they said their gonna release one once every 1 or 2 years if i remember correctly
well, as much as ursula is the best villain, but i think mother gothel is great!!! D:< because she's not supposed to be just villain. the fact that she kept rapunzel as her daughter and give her things instead of chaining her means that she's not that just-pure-evil woman. She's vain, and too vain actually! but she's not bad enough to chain her (at least in the beginning).. so i still think it's appropriate :)
I had seen this movie so many times before I even knew that they were voiced by someone else. (And not just real merfolkes). So, when I saw Jodi Benson singing 'Part of your World' in person... it seemed to me like Ariel was voicing her...
No match for Ursula? Please, Alyssa, didn't you see the way she took her on in the finale by pulling her hair? One of the points of this movie was to show people that girls can, as Beyoncé says, "Run the World".
URSULA'S A FRIEKING PETOPHILE!!!! I was 5 years old when I first saw this movie! And that was 25 years after this movie came out! I never thought that way!
I'm 15 years old now so when this aired on the disney channel I wouldn't have even been born. I'm glad I've seen this and am quite pleasantly suprised by how they didn't treat kids like idiots back then. I don´t know you guys but I love hand drawing disney movie much more than this new digital stuff...The little mermaid its the last disney movie to be made that way and its a masterpiece of the Disney movies!!

@Spectacular66 I gree...still, I also have the thought that making things easier with digital stuff its not 100% good becouse the digital thing remains some of dedication and commitment.
Of course I am not talking about every movie, just some of them :/ There still are great animated movies made out of the new tecnology...its just that not like old times...
Ursula has to be one of the BEST villains in Disney history; Pat Carroll honestly was just perfect for her voice! She was always the most memorable villain, her along with Hades, and I really loved to hate Mother Gothel in Tangled recently!
@olliezlol No hard feelings, people, but the Little Mermaid is one of my least favorite Disney movies. HOWEVER, Ursula was absolutely brilliant! Definitely an interesting and despicable villain. Scar and Jafar are my other two favorites.
@olliezlol I have to agree, Hades and Ursula are my favorite Disney villains. Is it weird that they kind of look similiar? Like they could be cousins or something...!
Least we not forget, Divine. Who inspired and was going to originally Ursula, but not long after making John Water's "Hairspray", passed away due to complications of heart and his weight. RIP, Divine, and whoever else we lost that made this picture my top favorite Disney film.
@izzybella101 Yeah I wish I could just turn back time and go through the Disney Renaissance. :( Too bad I was just a little boy when it all happened. I hate that everyone's only making 3d animations now. I mean I love 3d, but its not ART, its not the hundreds of hours poured into drawing each frame of these characters.
That's very interesting with how Ursula was animated....I have a villian in this animated movie I want to make and he's inspired by the Phantom of the Opera and Marlon Brando in his later years for his hand movements, but in terms of body type, he's a lot like Ursula because he's a 450 pounds of pure body fat....Kathy Zielkinski is one of my heroes because like me she's a woman who animates and I love how she watched people in movies for inspirations for Ursula's movements
@iloveVanilla14 I agree with you. However the company disney is STUBORN and will not listen to the fans. Just try to get them to do it. It is a uphill battle. Maybe in 2030. lol
Man It makes me sad to see Howard Ashman in these interviews... What a great talent. He will certainly be missed. I think he had a soft spot for the Character of Ursula she was such a force in the Music and so theatrical which makes her one of the best Disney Villains of all time Love Pat Carroll she really is great and is still doing the voiceovers for Ursula till this day.

They should show more things like this on Disney Channel... gosh, It's DISNEY channel and they don't show anything about disney classics... Walt Disney would be really angry if he could see what they show on disney channel!!
Oh, Disney did a few serious stories... The Hunchback of Notre Dame for example.
Nowadays, they just do comedy and almost nothing else (I liked Princess and the Frog... but it was again more comedic than serious).
I got to admit, I wish Disney movies were a bit more like Don Bluth movies (and Bluth left Disney because he wanted to do more dark/serious stories... and Disney just didn't want to do that).
I don't feel like 2D animation is outdated. Disney assumed wrong IMO... I like japanese animation because they still continue to use old school animation... and people still love it (even if many japanese animated series aren't animated much compared to western animation)! So, IMO, Disney assumed wrong. 2D animation ISN'T outdated (and never will be).
As for the stories... Disney did great but I wish they could tell more mature/serious stories sometimes, without taking away the magic of course.
I LOVE old school anumation, but I dont think its ever be popular again. The kids of the 70's and 80's used to be real kids. Now days kids dont have that innocence to be amused by fairytales
@DiLancreRoyalty Exactly and right on to the tee. The fairytales are not getting through to kids today like it did to me as a kid of the 90's or late 80's. Society is perverted to date. Just the other day, I seen a comment of some young kid trashing the lion king. lol We are living in the last of the last days. We have great technology and knowledge, but its just not solving the worlds problems.
I am very excited about this Disney's project (The Snow Queen is scheduled to be released in 2013). Because it has some people that worked in other great Disney animations
Written by Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King)
Produced by Don Hahn (Beauty and the Beast, Lion King)
Score composer Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin)
Btw, The Snow Queen is a fairytale created by the danish Hans Christian Andersen, who is also the creator of The Little Mermaid!

Yeah, they need to go back to the classics - hand drawn. This digital stuff is cool, but the old stuff totally owns! Misssing it! (***** 5stars for this comment)
@jollycakes I agree with you to some extent.. I am very fond of Pixar which was made by Disney before is became its own company.. but the old classics such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid are how they should make cartoon movies if you ask me... but digital has its pluses too....like effects are better in movies etc.. :)
@jollycakes Very true! And it depends on the digital stuff for what you define as "cool". The people at Pixar; their digital animation is AMAZING!!!! But when you use computers to create drawings that someone else could've drawn out by hand (like in the straight-to-DVD Disney Princess movies or in the sequals like Lion King 1 1/2), then it's just laziness. Either way, neither can compare to the artistry and heart that goes into hand-drawn animation!!!
Computerish animation is souless, it is not the ''art of animation'' (we can see this at the end of the Credits in traditionally animated features of the Renaissance).
I think that 3D animation (like in the Stampede scene in The Lion King, Deep Canvas in Tarzan, ballroom dance scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) and Computer effects (like in The Transformation scene in Beauty and the Beast etc.) should only help traditional animation.
@LegallyTan Yeah I do, but that is the point - that is what makes the moving so amazing, that they took their time to do this and to animate such an amazing movie, with their very hands. Besides, if they did it before, they can still do it again! I do understand what you mean though, but handmade/hand drawn is always better!
Gah the old original unrestored video and sound of mermaid. I love it, better then this digital restoration crap!!!!!!! I just love the original audio as well as the video. I love it how it looks dark and you feel like ariel is underwater more then on the 2006 dvd. I have the 1999 unrestored dvd version and the colors are just better to me then the restored 06.
yeah same with fantasia 2000. they took out the racist part and that's a part of history! sorry, i know it's racist but it's a part of our history and it's more important!
I watched the 89' VHS last night it was so good! I like watching it the way it was meant to be seen rather than the updates. With the expception of Beauty and the Beast in 3D!!!1
Alyssa is so cute in this, she was always a great actress, I am 26 and I remember her on Who's The Boss. My two favorite disney villains are Ursula and Maleficent! I can imitate Ursula's voice right down to the "T" Ursula always reminds me of a drag queen, they actually used Divine as the inspiration for Urusla. They did not tell you that here, but THEY DID! I have heard Disney is going to make a movie about Maleficent, I can't wait for that one! Disney villains RULE!
@maleficentdiva well she should remind you of a drag queen, as the inspiration for her was DIVINE. an old school drag queen who passed away before the movie was debuted. However Your two fav villains are mine as well. GO URSULA AND MALEFICENT!
lol its so funny seeing Alyssa Milano so young and so..... so..... so DISNEY!!! She must have started out as a sweet, innocent, pure little Disney Girl just like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato.
@TRISAND I know how you feel. Sometimes, we all want to be something that we know is not real. But the best thing is that even though it may seem impossible, we always use our imagination. And THAT is the key to being what it is we dream of being.
Did you know? "The animators created the character of Ursula with the intention of having Bea Arthur provide the voice. By the time Arthur was approached, she was already well into the sitcom The Golden Girls (1987) and declined the Disney offer." I always thought that she COULD have provided the voice in the movie. She sounds so much like the great Pat Carrol.
I just wish that Disney would make movies like these again. A little more realistic, please. I mean, what's up with Chicken Little... and Meet the Robinsons? I'm not saying that they're bad, but compare to this? Disney movies after Tarzan are becoming... less magical they they used to.
Meet the Robinsons is based on Walt's, so I don't think it's that bad. But I guess they did lost their magic because they now focuses on stupid teens and brings what they seemed to like (which is nonsense) and not the wonderful movies we knew.
BUT Theyre making The Frog Princess (Princess and the Frog) And Rupunzell! We might actually be in luck! These (well they messed with The princessa nd the fron but itll be good anyways!) are classics, and maybe there will be more! I hope they make a ... (cant spell it_ Rumplestiltsken? XD That is a very very very good classic!
I agree with you. My expectations for that movie are high. It has no influence from the HSM/Hannah Montana/Jonas Brothers stuff whatsoever, and that's a very good thing.
=D Play Kingdom Hearts! If you really like Disney you will really like this game! It has ALOT of disney worlds, characters, and some new ones! They also have Ariel! And I always go to Atlantica just for the heck of it because I love playing with Ariel and swimming ^^ Also another world I like is The Lion King ^^ Ahhh best disey game ever!
I know! But they shoulda made a kid Yuna,Rikku, and Paine. Not...fairies. -.- LOL It was awesome because I could meet players I havent met before. And Kairi is awesome! ^^
10 or 20 years ago the people who worked at Disney had so much work and they made such beautyfull movies.Today they havn`t got so much to work like before and they don`t make such great movies anymore.
cartoon/animation whatever.....People don't get too technical with things. We all know what livvy177 meant or we should. I hate it when smart a's correct and have to be proper in everything.
I miss the old days :(

Yeah, they need to go back to the classics - hand drawn. This digital stuff is cool, but the old stuff totally owns! Misssing it! (***** 5stars for this comment)

@jollycakes thats exactly what i think but this method of animation is jus much more expensive
now the worlds all about money and so on
i hate that
UlquiorraNo4 1 year ago
@jollycakes I agree with you to some extent.. I am very fond of Pixar which was made by Disney before is became its own company.. but the old classics such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid are how they should make cartoon movies if you ask me... but digital has its pluses too....like effects are better in movies etc.. :)
DutchessDivina 1 year ago
@jollycakes Very true! And it depends on the digital stuff for what you define as "cool". The people at Pixar; their digital animation is AMAZING!!!! But when you use computers to create drawings that someone else could've drawn out by hand (like in the straight-to-DVD Disney Princess movies or in the sequals like Lion King 1 1/2), then it's just laziness. Either way, neither can compare to the artistry and heart that goes into hand-drawn animation!!!

@jollycakes Agreed, mate!

@jollycakes There are many facial expressions, comedy and drama situations that are only possible in traditional animation.
oopaulorafael 1 year ago
@jollycakes ikr. but do you realize how much time and effort it takes animating on paper?
LegallyTan 1 year ago
@LegallyTan yes but its all worth the hard work these hand drawn movies are a instant classic!
ItsFlapJack 1 year ago
@LegallyTan Yeah I do, but that is the point - that is what makes the moving so amazing, that they took their time to do this and to animate such an amazing movie, with their very hands. Besides, if they did it before, they can still do it again! I do understand what you mean though, but handmade/hand drawn is always better!
jollycakes 11 months ago
@jollycakes completely agreed :D it really is magical

@jollycakes actually the digital stuff is so UNcool ........ those drawings are the best .

Pat Carroll, who voices Ursula kind of resembles her.

I wanna punch that Alyssa girl in the face. "Liek omg don't you just love to hate her?!?!?!11ONEONE" NO, I love to love her. You are SO annoying.
Imagin8io 2 years ago 5
Alyssa is so cute in this, she was always a great actress, I am 26 and I remember her on Who's The Boss. My two favorite disney villains are Ursula and Maleficent! I can imitate Ursula's voice right down to the "T" Ursula always reminds me of a drag queen, they actually used Divine as the inspiration for Urusla. They did not tell you that here, but THEY DID! I have heard Disney is going to make a movie about Maleficent, I can't wait for that one! Disney villains RULE!
maleficentdiva 2 years ago 4
are they really going to make a movie about maleficent?i'm soo excited!^_^
rozendollmaker 2 years ago 4
@maleficentdiva please let me know about when it comes out. I want to see it way bad. Villains do indeed rule.
bbradfordp 2 years ago 2
@maleficentdiva well she should remind you of a drag queen, as the inspiration for her was DIVINE. an old school drag queen who passed away before the movie was debuted. However Your two fav villains are mine as well. GO URSULA AND MALEFICENT!
DutchessDivina 1 year ago
lol its so funny seeing Alyssa Milano so young and so..... so..... so DISNEY!!!

Toxic106 2 years ago 15
Meet the Robinsons is based on Walt's, so I don't think it's that bad. But I guess they did lost their magic because they now focuses on stupid teens and brings what they seemed to like (which is nonsense) and not the wonderful movies we knew.
mskats10 2 years ago
i agree, old disney focus on kids, and early teens. now they focus on mid teens, late teens.

What Disney really needs to do is go back to the classic stories approach.
