The Edwin Hawkins Singers cut Oh Happy Day in 1967 when they were known as the Northern California State Youth Choir & it was released nationally on Buddah Records in early 1969. Billy Mitchell's musical director Richard Pegue had him cut this version while the Hawkins original was still climbing the charts - a common occurence when jazz musicians record their renditions of commercial hit songs.
Love the Jazz musician Billy Mitchell

Since edwin hawkins made Oh happy day in early 1970's I would say this pre-dated that.
