  • Clapton is the great and the movie "the last waltz is . beautifull"

  • Eric Clapton wanted to join the Band in the late 60's. I guess this is what they would of been like. :))))

  • this is music

    this is love

    this is gods

this is band one and only the band

last walz is changed my life. best concert ever in the history

  • Robbie!

  • Love Clapton....but ALVIN LEE had them all beat when it came to raw rock 'n' roll. Hands down.

  • This is my favorite rock album of all time . Robbie is amazing . I listen to this album over and over . The best ever

  • Rolling Stone had John Lennon ahead of Robbie Robertson in its greatest guitarists of all time.I don' t remember Lennon playing guitar like this.

  • Gosh, Robbie, you look so cool!

  • Clapton tended to overplay; Robertson did subtle licks that blended in with The Band. This duel is essentially silly wankery.

  • CLAPTON IS GOD

  • @bountyhunterdude) I can remember a band called, ten years after, playing in the Paradiso.

There was a guy named Alvin, played a mean guitar too.

  • @sj44kie Alvin Lee

  • Happy Anniversary Last Waltz!

  • Eric and Robbie are 2 different kinds of players, Robbie and Jimmy Page were more gritty, visceral or "sloppy", Beck and Clapton have a "cleaner" sound

  • I never understood why they chopped the solos on a few songs on the film.

  • Robbie plays the shti out of Clapton

  • I just love Robbie's spirit !

  • the experts chime in . always a few experts on every subject

  • the greatest Rockers of all Time

  • Eric always wanted to be in The Band. As you can see, it would have been a great fit

  • Robbie and Eric have read each other perfectly....it will never be who is better....it will always how they, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck or a plethora of other guitarists can just dig the music they're playing.

  • Guitarists are like beer. yeah sure, some are better than others. but at the end of the day we all have our favorite that we stick by.

  • Gentlemen, there is no greatest guitarist of all time. They all influence one another. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Robbie Robertson, Jimmi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Page. If none of them had heard of the other, do you think they would sound like they do? It is a fools aruguement

  • Jeez, @jumpmanJB23, I understand your passion for Eric but read what @Stonemebaby77 said- no berating & cursing...quiet authority & knowledge. He schooled me!

It's fact that Clapton was battling addictions at this time & it affected his playing. I love him too, Layla may be the greatest song written, but I like Robertson's playing here. It's worth noting Duane Allman contributed equally if not more to Layla's guitar work.

Gotta say it. Robertson is the most beautiful man I've ever seen.

  • ok, at 37 seconds I almost wish I was that stoner hippie on stage left. Groovy man.

  • Martin Scorsese directed the film The Last Waltz. Robbie Robertson still continues to work Martin Scorsese. Scoring films and other things. They apparently shared a lot of good times.

  • Two great musicians sparring and enjoying the hell out of it - that's all

  • It's not how many notes you play its how you play them

  • @run12102038 Noice subtle point! Plus understanding the blues. A lotta notes works well in some genres.

  • THIS WAS THE BAND'S NIGHT. CLAPTON LET HIS GUITAR STRAP COME UNDONE SO ROBBIE COULD 'SHINE' A LITTLE ON HIS NIGHT. VERY GRATEFUL OF CLAPTON.

  • @l2string oh for god's sake get back under your bridge you fucking troll.

  • if you know anything about guitar clapton playing lot more notes then robbie he makes it look easy and he was mess up in the 70s

  • I gotta agree with Stonemebaby77..... whats with all these comparisons? these artists have always been sorted out by what they've done through the people buying the records or going to the concerts, etc. you guys are so busy comparing who can spit the farthest, i don't think you're really enjoying the music.

  • I was around back then and very much into the Band, Cream, etc. Clapton didn't really look at it as replacing Robbie as much as getting into another band WITH Robertson and company to provide himself with a broader basis of freedom to pursue the music. Cream had kinda backed themselves into a corner with everybody expecting to hear a certain brand of rock.

  • the greatest steel guitarist of all time is Ry Cooder no debate. Clapton was a good blues/ rock guitarist but Hendrix was better.

  • Hey Fat Guy: watch the @0:09 mark you can see Clapton raise his guitar up and FLIP THE STRAP so he could pull it off when he wanted. We used to call it the 'STRAT STRAP SURPRISE' ! Worked every time!!!

  • @l2string Hey stringbean, I found a friend for you! There's a character called mcdstuff on another upload of this video saying the same thing. Maybe you two can get together and explain to the world why Clapton would want Robertson to look so good when Clapton was trying to steal his job!

  • @l2string He was avoiding the mic stand which you see his strat's headstock hit before he raises it.

  • @AfatGuyNamedPete.....Well, I'm glad I finally convinced you as to what 'really' took place that night'. You ever think of changing your name to A Guy Named Pete "WITH A THICK HEAD" ? !!

  • @AFatGuyNamedPete...For Pete's sake the camera almost zooms in on the strap as he's tugging on the guitar! They knew he was going to do it, that's how they were able to capture on film, or else they would have had the camera on ROBBIE. I played in a 5 piece band and we used to pull this same trick at every new gig we played, the crowd loved it and I knew I had scored yet another BJ from one of the hot ladies. They pulled their pants down faster than Eric pulls his guitar. Tricks of the trade.

  • @l2string Yes, you're right. They couldn't have had the camera on him because he had just been announced as a guest star, he was singing lead on the song or because he was soloing. It was because they knew he was going to pull the strap off.

  • @Dave897456..Talk sell's books! It's easy as day to see Eric pulling down (twice) on the guitar attempting to seperate it from the strap. The guitar is not in a 'gravity fall' but rather a fall set in motion by the act of 'pushing' down on the instrument. Robbie couldn't play that solo if you gave him a laxitive, not to say it sound like crap, it sounds like Clapton showed him what to play. Why doesn't Robbie have any other "moments" at the Waltz? And now you know the rest of the story(book).

  • @l2string Yes, and of course this deliberate pulling down of the guitar strap was completely missed by the director, cinematographers, editors, and everyone involved in post production, remaining unknown to the world until some previously unknown expert in film interpretation exposed it to the world on YouTube thirty five years later. All that Robertson hate is eating your brain

  • LOSING THE STRAP..........WAS PLANNED! YOU CAN SEE CLAPTON STARING AT AND THEN PULLING HIS GUITAR DOWN TO UNDO AT THE PRECISE MOMENT THE NEXT PART OF THE SOLO WAS TO BEGIN. IT WAS MEANT TO SHOW ROBBIE COULD 'SAVE THE SONG'

  • @l2string You have quite the imagination! Clapton talks about this incident in his autobiography! Buy his book!

  • Robbie Robertson, although a big douche is the best rock n' roll guitarist of all time

  • @TheGeneticMethod Strong words! When did you meet him in person?

  • love clapton,love the band.awesome

  • people have lost their minds clapton rocks as well as page

  • Who do you think was the best player in the 1960's. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, or Jimmy Page?

  • @bountyhunterdude Jimmy Page !

  • @bountyhunterdude , yo! dude! have you heard of gil sagario? He's the best guitarist ever!!!!

  • @bountyhunterdude micheal bloomfield.

  • @bountyhunterdude ufffffffff eric? jeff? jimmy?

  • @bountyhunterdude Hendrix - No contest!

  • @Dave897456 i thought it was common knowledge that hendrix was and still is the greatest gutarist ,just imagine what would have come later ,all that by the age of 27

  • @bountyhunterdude jim hendrix

  • @bountyhunterdude Jimmy always

  • @bountyhunterdude

There's no best player guitar, it's just music, not a race...

  • @bountyhunterdude James Marshall Hendrix. but to stay with the flow of your question my fave is still jeff beck

  • @bountyhunterdude Jimmy Page any day dude! Look at his compositions! He is/was the most amazing music composer/guitarist in the late sixties and seventies. Seen the Robert Plant and Jimmy Page's Kashmir live perfomance at Albert Hall? Epic!

  • @bountyhunterdude jimi hendrix kkkkkk

  • @bountyhunterdude Clapton

  • @bountyhunterdude Peter Green

  • Hey Guy I would say Eric by far and I would put Duanne Allman ahead of Jeff and Jimmy But I'm Geargia boy too.

  • @bountyhunterdude Hendrix

  • @bountyhunterdude

    ....Robbie Robertson!

  • @999Tweedy Peter Frampton

  • @bountyhunterdude hendrix?

robertson kills it thru-out this concert doc.

  • they are insanely awesome. thanks for posting!!

  • all you idiots stop mentioning steve ray vaugh and jimi hendrix they are dead!!!!the greatest guitar player in the world is jimmy page because he is still alive!!clapton said he was the best. page is the best blues guitar player and the #1 steel guitar player in the world look it up.toby keith tried to hire page for an album because he is the best steel guitar player in the world!

  • @carbonesyrc Clapton also once said that the best electric guitar player in the world was Billy Gibbons. So Eric likes to change his mind often. I've seen many of the greats, including Page, and the one that made my jaw hit the floor was Beck. That said I think Pagey is the best arranger of guitar bits that rock and roll has ever known. Page can play anything but he gets it down on tape better than anyone else. He has an imagination that exceeds his ability. THAT is why he is a monster.

  • @carbonesyrc Page is the greatest steel guitar player in the world? You fanboys get worse every day.

  • I get kind of tired with some of the venom directed at Eric Clapton, I recall his really early years, his time with Cream (not the best part of his career imho) and what has followed since. He has been a tremendous influence on many musicians and paid homage to many many bluesmen, encouraging people to buy the originators of the music he plays. Like Frank Zappa and Neil Young, Eric is a musician, an entertainer and a mentor to many.

  • @beowulf3075 Clapton's riffs have been stolen for so long and by so many that they seem ordinary by now. You can go out tonight and see a blues band anywhere in the world and I guarantee that the lead guitar player is doing something he picked up from Clapton. I share your sentiment.

  • @adish6 Yes, and clapton stole all of those licks from various american bluesman

  • @killfuckyou8769 and so did the blues guys before him. Its not stealing its just the blues lol.

  • Two great bluesmen who influenced each other. All you internet age punk ass wannabes who sit and argue over one being better than the other have no idea what the blues is all about. No guitarist sits around and talks about how he's better than another. It's all about influence. Elmore James and T-Bone wrote the book on what these dudes are doing and they're paying homage to the music they love, not sitting around debating who's best like a bunch of gangsta rappers.

  • Maybe not Eddie or Jimmy but even Eric says Stevie Ray Vaughn is better than Clampton.

Now we havent even began to discuss Hendrix!

  • @MrJeff1947 For some, probably self-doubt, Eric says EVERYONE's better than him. I think when Eric's playing at his best (as he did when I last saw him in Dusseldorf last year) there's no-one to touch him as a blues player.

  • There is more talent onstage in this video than exists in all of 'popular music' in 2011.

  • Matt, I agree with you, there really is no melody in superfast guitar playing. Playing the blues with the correct note like how eric, robie, bb king, stevie ray vaughan, and gil sagario ????? do it is way too darn difficult..... With a strato w/c board is curved, eric's way of playing is something you have to learn by the heart coz it won't play if you missed.... Get the grip....

  • how are there dislikes on this?

  • Robie Robertson picking up when Claptons guitar strap breaks is simply incredible

  • @waketheoblivious Not when you consider that's what RR told him to do just before the song started. It was planned. Have a look at Clapton's guitar strap. He deliberately put it on like that so it'd fall off.

  • @surfandyoga

Robbie Robertson had 20+ guests to introduce, remember the tune being played and deal with Dylan showing up last minute. The last thing Robbie Robertson and Eric Clapton would have time to do is plan for a guitar strap to come loose midway through Claptan's performance. Sorry, but diabolical is not an attribute either of these incredible performers have in their list of descriptive accalades. You however are an oblivious idiot totally unaware of whats involved in these events.

  • Idiot. This wasn't a contest on who could play the guitar better. It was a Tribute to the Band. Stop smoking that shit, it makes you more stupid.

  • Eric Clapton looks embarrassed, cos he can´t play what Robbie is playing, but everyone expect him to do it.

  • @MsCaleb79 what the fuck are you talking about no where in this video does he look embarrassed. even when his strap falls off. and especially not because he "cant play what Robbie is playing". He cant play what Robbies playing but Robbie cant play what Eric plays either. Two amazing guitarist up there keep your gay opinions to yourself. no cares what you think because no one knows who you are. Why would the best guitarist be embarrassed. You are embarrassed now tho

  • @jumpmanJB23 No, you don´t know who they are, Eric is the guy to the left, he is english. And even his fans are embarrassed. But Robbie, oh yeah, he is the man, he can stand up straight and clean the floor with Eric. I don´t wanna tell you about the rest of the band, I belive you can´t handle that.

  • @MsCaleb79 I think Clapton could probably figure out what Robbie's playing: it's a simple blues pattern. It's just that Robbie's playing comes off as coked-up and frenetic, while Eric's starts off restrained and builds up steam.

  • @babamuna66 Yes even I could figure out what they are playing. I have a guitar like Robbie and a strap like Erik, but I like robbie more than I like Eric.

  • I know Clapton can play Robertson off the stage without breaking a sweat, but I like Robbie's playing better here. He had more invested.

If you had to trade solos with Clapton, wouldn't you be practicing? :-)

  • Is this Justin Bieber's back up guitarist?

  • @guinnesstrail Is that a dick in your mouth?

  • @tschrenk1 What? You don't like Bieber?

  • Why the hell would anyone stage a stupid strap to fall off? So Robbie could jump in and show the mutants out there what a hero he is? Think about how dumb that sounds. Why would he? Just tell me that. Why?

  • levon helm is so amazing as a drummer. what a great band!!!

  • LOL, also @ 4:08 Clapton's said to himself, "yea, I'm awesome", lol he couldn't be more right

  • @ 0:46 When Clapton's strap came off is just a true presentation of an incredible group of musicians. Not only was Robbie 100% on top of it, the whole band did it just perfectly, I give huge credit to the base player coming in with the end of the line riff to queue the whole band.

  • hell yeah man. that was cool as fuck

  • "THE Band" biggest fans were the biggest acts of the day. It wasn't until later when the survivors starting telling us this. The Band was The Band.

  • I cannot believe there are dis-likes on this tune...wtf, over?...lol ...rockon my friends

  • Clapton and Robbie are magic

  • theres great tremendous talented guitarists and then theres ec

  • great tune, great band..robbie robertson kicks ass here (as does ec,of course)

  • The band should have been well before my time really given my age but I first saw this concert on a video my dad has as a kid and was bowled over by how great they were as musicians. I think this was deffo one of the best group of musicians to ever combine as a band. Such a talent and although this footage is as ancient as the Ark I have to say it as a pure pleasure to watch and listen to for me personally. Sound wise It could do with getting HD tho or something yeah?

  • what happend to eric in his guitar solo? he lost control !!

  • @suzanneramdane his strap came off johnf

  • what happend to eric in his guitar solo?

  • ...can someone pleasequit comparing and tab these solos or film a youtube lesson.... ...pretty pleeaaaseee...?

  • I am convinced that people will say just anything to create a story. It is SO CLEAR THAT THIS IS THE MOST ORGANIC moment in rock n roll. Clapton will be the first to tell you that his strap un-hooked and Robertson, Clapton's guitar hero just picked up where he left off. RR is mind-blowing here. You can "fake' these moments. Get a clue. Staged - MY ASS!! And what an amazing moment in film! Such a great movie!!

  • the part from 4:05 to 4:25 is isnt that great and it wasnt even in my DvD ! ? i want the song from the dvd

  • The strap thing is not staged. Watch VH-1 Classic and both Scorcese and Robertson explain what happened and how the latter just picked up for Clapton.

  • Robbie Robertson: "Challenge Acepted"

  • I think that strap incident was staged. Nevertheless, an amazing performance! (even if it was staged, it's still a pretty cool trick.)

  • No need to proclaim a "winner" in this friendly showdown. Clapton is a pure blues player. Robbie's style is a bit harder to define but it straddles somewhere between R&B and old time rockabilly. Both are masters at their craft.

  • ...my mate joost from holland plays rings around these guys...you may have heard of him - he invented the 9th note...

...otherwise, when it comes to jimi or clapton i prefer the guy from roxette who is seriously under-rated...and george formby who is simply the ace...

  • ラスト・ワルツのクラプトンとロバートソン、まだまだ、レイド・バック状態だったな!顔はキリストじゃ!

  • ...i was sitting at home playing my onyx les paul copy thru a $50 monarch amp i bought at kmart when i got a call. it was from eric clapton, funnily enough - he said he'd heard from jimmy page, robbie robertson and jimi hendrix that i was (yes me) the best guitarist in the world on a scientifically certifiable scale of musical genius...he said keep up the good work and dont worry what those guys on youtube comments pages say...thanx eric.

  • my god you people crack me up with these comments - who's smokin who? who's better than who? who cares! can't you just enjoy it for what it is - 2 incredible musicians having a blast.

  • this might me a bit harsh...i love the band but think robbies playing sucks... no i'm not comparing him to eric but i've just never thought there was much there in his guitar abilities

  • @wetwoodchuck Nah, you're not harsh. Merely an idiot.

  • Heading into the last phrase when Eric moves up an octave and plays some mind-bending licks, I get chills every time.

  • ... get this - i'm a distraught single white male, right, possibly divorced else a teenage virgin, and i really like to sit at home judging guitarists against each other in a nasty, vindictive tone - i REALLY enjoy that!

  • COOL

  • Yes to all. paying does not make a great guitar player, you have to make it cry, feel pain, and have a soul......

  • Cool duel, Robbie holds his own pretty good, Erics technique is better, but sorry Clapperheads ,Robbie plays with more (coked up) soul. Think Eric was sober, sure looks it compared to the rest of em

  • When a song puts a smile on your face...that's all that matters ;)

  • Clapton had finesse like no one else and was innovative. All I gotta say about that. Van Halen was amazing, Page amazing, Hendrix godly, Stevie Ray Vaughn possibly the GOAT. Robbie Robertson - ain t nothing wrong with that.

  • If anyone thinks Robertson smokes Clapton here they clearly were not listening or watching. This song does not suit Robertson's style of play.

  • 4 10 year olds watched this after they listened to justin bitcher the guy whos ruining our childrens lives the little bugger

  • At their last concert Robertson is supposed to smoke Clapton. Nobody smokes Clapton...not Jimmy Page, not Santana, not Eddie van Halen, asso.

  • Jeez, the way Robbie plays here, I'd hate to hanging up my spurs if I was a band - member.

  • Jeez, the way Robbie plays here, I'd hate to hanging up my spurs if I was a band - menber.

  • I just bought one of those Music Man amps they are using in this jam (well, the same model).

  • Robertson SMOKES Clapton

  • Robbie's certainly cool...

  • This "concert" would have been the concert of the gods even if it hadn't been filmed. The fact that Scorcese turned into perhaps the greatest concert film of all time turned the event into a once in a lifetime affair that will never be equaled.

  • Robbie ... just GREAT...., what else is there to say!!

  • @2112murphy Not just the roadies, man. If this show had been any more awesome, it would have caused the universe to explode.

  • robbie beats the shit of clapton!

  • if any one want tabs for both robs solos message me there really fun and it was pretty hard to figure out glad i can help

  • One of the all time great musical moments. At :51 seconds when Claptons guitar strap breaks.

Robertson spots it, and just plays his part for him, until he's ready.

Makes me sick - musicians that talented. Imagine playing with Clapton, and having to take over a bit you haven't done ONCE in rehearsals! Just ad libbing basically

Sure he invented that bit on the spot

  • Robbie is on his game that night. Eric not so much.

  • @Transterra55

Agreed. Eric’s tone is a bit off, on the basis that his thret work is probably 10% less sharp and precise than it usually is.

He was probably high. Or drunk.

  • I'm reading Eric's autobiography (great book) and he makes mention, on page 171, about his guitar strap coming undone. I love finding cross references like that. Best rendition of "Further on up the Road" I've ever heard.

  • This beautiful. Its not when you play that matters, its when you dont play.... so many wanker guitar players out there who dont let the music breath.

  • I am a straight guy and I find Robbie really ..... smooth ;)

  • Man that guy's fucking good.

  • @NightBlazer37 who's that guy?

  • I love how at the 50 second mark, the strap on Claptons guitar slips off and Robertson just jumps right in, smooth as silk

  • @dragonforcecanada woah i own this film and never even noticed that! so awesome!

  • @89dan98 Me too!

  • I love guitar duets!

  • Pretty cool when Clapton's guitar strap broke and Robbie took over and never missed a beat.

  • @odogg45 That was the coolest thing I'd ever seen for years after I first saw it!

  • @odogg45 Clapton's strap doesn't actually break - it just slips off the guitar because Eric's got it on upside down so the open 'slot' part of the hole which slips over the button on the cutaway is taking the strain. And yes, Robbie picks it up wonderfully... tho' he was helped by Eric's guitar thoughtfully falling off in one of the 'stops'!

  • @odogg45 It didn't break, it just popped off. If you don't make sure it's straight, that happens. Even to Clapton :)

  • @amishius

He did it on purpose. You see him put a twist in the strap before the start.

  • @odogg45

Sorry to say this but it's widely considered that the whole thing was staged. If you look at it carefully you can see that Clapton's strap isn't on correctly to begin with and he gives it a gentle nudge on the main body of the guitar causing it to fall off. Either way, doesn't take away from what is an awesome performance.

  • @jessop187 dude its not staged dumbass look at 0:07 his strap flips there it wasn't flipped from the beginning dummy

  • @jessop187 Well no shit his strap didn't really break. I think 99% of people knew what I was talking about. Anyone with a set of eyeballs could see it was on upside down. Always gotta be a know it all out there. LOL........

  • @odogg45 they were so intuned with each others styles robbie was so on for that concert definately a check ur ego at the door type concert

  • @odogg45 yeah i was there baby should da been there too. what an awesome time. never ever forget it!!!

  • @rockinlady1111 God bless you, honeybaby!.... I greww up on Sabbath, Zepplin, Van Halen, Metallica... an old metalhead.... but this was rock'n'roll history.... wish I'd have been there.... peace+love 2 all..................

  • Clapton is a genius!!! watch him play at 2:16,3:53,and 4:08. He looks like Rain Man or a savant, whatever he is; a GOD!!

  • Look at Robbie when he's playing, some say he's coked out. I think hes talking shit to his guitar!

  • They wouldn't have been as good sober

  • They were whacked on cocaine. Check out the rock in Neil Young's nose on Helpless. There were piles of it backstage. Rock Star Decadence.

  • keep an eye out for Robbie's new solo record coming soon... Clapton and Robertson reunite on many of the tracks!!!

  • don't get me wrong, I love Robbie...but Eric has such ease...imagine if he had been straight...whew..

  • pravi komad-super band super Clapton
