Nice! Also check out a version of this, and other early ones, on YouTube recorded during a TV broadcast on 3/14/78. The energy's the same, but the audio quality is better.
Were Cheap Trick responding both to the challenge of a country who hadn't really accepted them, and one still under the thrall of punk? The way they approach this show seems to suggest they are out to prove they can rock as hard and raw as any punk rockers. I've never seen CT so rough-edged (but still tight) as on this show. Later on, Robin positively yells out the song 'Surrender'!

I was there!!! what a great edition! the Cure, The Police, Motorhead among the others and these really great Cheap Trick! thank you so much for posting this!!
Nothing Alembic about that bass, that is the first Hamer model B12A 12 string bass. This is not the first 12 string Tom had, he first had a 10-string, then a 12-string called the Quad Bass, (as seen on the Budokan album), then a few others before the B12A. The B12A debuted on the Dream Police tour, as shown here.
Tom did also have an Alembic 8-string bass that made an appearance here and there.
This is an INCREDIBLE find, I was there back in the day woohoo!!
I remember getting to Reading pretty much just in time to catch them, so seeing Trick up close from that afternoon decades later is a real unexpected treat.
Thank-you for posting, amazing, so cool we live in an age we can do this stuff now, awesome!
When music festivals were awesome back in the day.Today, when you go to these fevitvals. Its like a sponsors circus !!! With to much crap everywhere. Long Live Cheap Trick !!!
Holy shit! Rick was bouncin' around like a pinball wasn't he??!!! Nice to see them here livin' the dream. They all say they are reincarnated 'Brits' anyways!!! HA!
No thats a 12 string, Tom invented the 12 string bass, and that's one of the early one's that he plays in this clip. These day's a guitar company called Waterstone makes a really nice Tom Petersen signiture model that he plays!
OMG! I can't even imagine trying to play that bass. I'd be happy with the 8 string. Rick and Tom took guitars to an insane level! Thanks sacredo07! Rock on!
I have a Hamer 12 string and it's not as hard as you would think...just 4 sets of 3, with a bass string and 2 guitar strings tuned an octive higher...bone rattling!!
The opening song most of the time, Come On Come On, would be next i think. And still rockin 30 years later. These guyz are #1 in my book, I ve seen them 67 times in 32 years. 68 will be next week at Jones Beach in NY.
I'm starting to realize that there are hardly any cooler bands than Cheap Trick... they still bring the rock and have written more great songs than just about anyone. God bless Cheap Trick!

Probably the best version of "Hello There" out there! And to think, Rick wrote this song as a soundcheck!

Awesome! I would hope this would be released on DVD! It would make a great companion to the Budokan dvd set.
