I have been looking for this song and did not know the artist, just found out the name of the group today it was on old school radio station while I was taking a bath. And now I "Thank You" for this video!
Hear this often on 98.7 Kiss FM (Tri-State Area) w/ Felix Hernandez on Sunday afternoons... this is definitely a classic!!! Would love to have it on my MP3 player--
Hey everybody, I thank all of you for your wonderful comments about Kaleidoscope of which I was a part of, and thank you jayhawk2099 for keeping us alive in the hearts and minds of so many. We're not together anymore but remain friends. Tommy Harrington, Hazel King Moore, James Perry, Sylvia Walker and yours truly Derrick "Derky" Culler became not just a group but a family, to see what I've been doing since than google me or hit me on Facebook Derrick "Derky" Culler.
I had this on an old 45 with so many "pops" you could barely hear the lyrics. I borrowed it from a friends parents and put it on tape. I havent heard it this clearly since it was played at house parties back in the day. These Newark cats put it down!
I recently spoke to my brother (William Rogers nickname Wolf) who played the piano/keyboard and did background vocals on this song, James Perry did first lead in vocals...he has an idea of where some of the other (former) members are, and is very glad to know that this song is still around and kicking!
I have not been given permission to post more songs bu this group but one of the singers will be setting up a web page using docs that I made for them maby with info on cds possibly for sale.
i remember this from back in 1975. when i was in grammer school my sisters and i use dance to this song every time it came on the radio . it's a shame it didn't become a hit , because it's such a beautiful song. this song and group are nowhere to be found in any R&B chart books.another group by the same name appears on the pop charts.
TO JAYHAWK2099......I'M A NEARLY RETIRED FF IN BFLO.NY. THESE GENTLEMEN WERE THE PRECURSORS TO BLUE MAGIC......A LITTLE SOFTER ON THE LEAD BUT...LISTEN CLOSELY! I ALSO REMEMBER A SONG THAT CAME OUT ABOUT THE SAME TIME FROM A GROUP CALLED SPRING....IT WAS CALLED "TALKED TO THE RAIN TODAY". ANYONE EVER HEAR OF IT/HAVE IT FOR UPLOAD!? WHEN MY FELLAS AT THE BAR HEAR THIS THEY WILL SIMPLY BUG OUT! ONLY TY AND MYSELF REMEMBERED IT!! THANK YOU!!!
Ah the group called Kaleidoscope Actually Started as the first of January. Were managed by Loyd Dowdell who used to live on Grove st in East Orange NJ. I had taken them down to Philly a couple of times to meet with Norm Harris. I am still friends and keep in touch with some of them, and if anyone is interested in getting a copy of song on cd let me know.
I went to high school with the lead singer James Perry. He had a mean Tenor and could sing his ass off. Don't know where he is today, hey James if you read this I still Love you and that voice of yours hope you are still singing. Thanks for posting jayhawk2099 brings back sweet memories.
One of the few Baker Harris Young Productions on the Gamble Huff owned /CBS distributed TSOP label. Arranged by Norman 'The Harris Machine' Harris. Most of the BHY stuff was on the CBS distributed Golden Fleece label, and the majority of that was the Trammps before they went to Atlantic.'
Thanks for the comment. I'm crossing my fingers that if Sony releases a sequel to their Conquer the World compilation of lesser known Gamble & Huff recordings, that they'll put on some Kaleidoscope recordings.
Are you sure about that? Not to doubt you, it's just at this time, Ted Mills was a few years into his membership with Blue Magic. Plus, the voice doesn't sound exactly like him. Was he moonlighting?
this is really wonderful and beautiful...something that u dont hear everyday and everywhere these days...i faved this one...thank u for sharing this beautiful song****HUGS****yayiemai
This track kind of reminds me of a few of the Blue Magic cuts Norman Harris also produced, like Stop To Start. These guys only did two 45s for TSOP, which was a sub label for Philadelphia International. Unless they changed their name to someone else, I believe this is the only music they put out. The other three cuts are awesome dance numbers, one of which you already posted.
Thanks...yea it's a great song.I'm sure there's more people out there that is saying wow...lol My dad was just in awe...he hasn't heard this since the 70's.
Thank You! Jersey City!
