The Leafs were the westernmost east team at the time and to have a balanced league they had to play in the Western Conference. The league had made two schedules for the 2011-12 season that were identical except for the fact that Winnipeg replaced Atlanta because there would not have been time to restructure the entire league in time for the season. If the Jets would of traded away Tkachuk instead of Selanne due to financial problems the Jets might of had a shot at the Stanley Cup in their last year.
