I was curious to see where Norman Lear got his influence for Archie bunker so I looked this up. What's really odd is television in the 21st century wouldn't try to air this kind of humor. And they did it in the 70's. I agree...it's satire and it's been done on tv for years (Hogan's Heroes, Sanford and Son, All in the family, etc) I admire the balls it took to air this because it was way more cutting edge than what Lear did here in the states.

People seem to forget that Alf is a symbol of mockery, the man who played him was a Jewish Totenham supporter, the same people the character attacked amongst other. I used to go to college with a couple of Pakistani guys around this time, and they must have seen this sketch. They always used to refer to the rest of us as 'those white wogs' as Spike says right at the end. Like most things, it is not always what is said, but how it is said. People can usually tell the difference between words in jest and those in pure spite. We never took offence, and as with this sketch, people should view this in the spirit it was intended. Also see 'Love thy neighbour'.

it was a piss take on racism - nothing more - I understand the UK has become incredibly PC over the last twenty years - I left ten years ago ;) . Now the UK audiences have been PC brainwashed - they can't possibly watch this without taking offence to it - pity really - it was just taking the piss - comedy - Brit comedy - sold worldwide because of this kind of unique nature - not only - but still - it was comedy! :)

Good old Spike! He's in a later episode of 'in sickness and in health' too at the tea dance lol. I'm amazed at how this series is shunned nowadays, it's full of great writing. PC bollocks, let people make their own minds up and if they don't appreciate that it's satire more fool them!

This show was a very clever design to break Britain. They use British Icons and accents to break down the racial barriers that were natural. Stalinist programming with loads of patience. Love they neighbour is another one. Very clever.

I grew up with this stuff. Looking at it now, it makes me cringe. And's it go nothing to do with whether it's PC or not, either. I mean, is it really that funny, compared with some of the timeless sketches from Monty Python, or Peter Cooke and Dudley Moore from the same period? Not a chance! This is not inspired writing. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is not banned. Alf Garnet was appearing on TV until very recently. The only reason he stopped appearing was because the writer/creator died.

I'm never sure why Spike thought it OK to 'black up', though - he was born and raised in India, and even spoke the language - he should have had more empathy for the immigrants than anyone. That said, I suppose the punchline makes its point effectively.

I was curious to see where Norman Lear got his influence for Archie bunker so I looked this up. What's really odd is television in the 21st century wouldn't try to air this kind of humor. And they did it in the 70's. I agree...it's satire and it's been done on tv for years (Hogan's Heroes, Sanford and Son, All in the family, etc) I admire the balls it took to air this because it was way more cutting edge than what Lear did here in the states.

This isn't banned. Alf Garnet has been recognised time and again as brilliant satire. People seem to forget that Alf is a symbol of mockery, the man who played him was a Jewish Totenham supporter, the same people the character attacked amongst other. This whole scene mocks both liberal preconceptions of races as well as racist conservative ones, the line about being a second class citizen but a first class passenger is paritucularly apt, equal oppourtunity.

This sitcom was created to tackle racism, not promote it. The character is deliberately made to be unsophisticated and obnoxious. Comedy is a great tool against many forms of bigotry. Try to see it from that perspective.
