@stonesandspoons that is not true, the russian yak 141 is from a german concept, so they stole that. and the yak-141 was a complete failure, we did it right
No aircraft in the world can be said to of been designed and built exclusively by one country. One country owns and commissions them however. The engine of STOVL variant of the JSF was built by Rolls-Royce, a British company originally, but now international, patented by Lockheed and built built in collaboration with General Electric while the body was designed by numerous American companies with parts built in Europe. The clue's in the name of 'JOINT Strike Fighter'..
I've never liked this a/c from the word go. To get into the VTOL setting it has to open 3 openings before it can even start to lift. The time it would waste opening those up if it wanted to VIFF like the harrier can, pointing its nozzles forward slowing from 600 kts to less than 250kts in a a couple secs. So the harrier isn't supersonic. So wot. It does its job & does it triumphantly well
RR and BAE Systems are merely a risk sharing partners in the project ..RR is simply a participant
and didnt contribute anything to development of the engine which was designed and developed by Pratt and Whitney..The center lift fan manufactured by RR is simply a part manufactured in Britan under specifications set forth by Pratt and Whitney-As far as the stealth techology and AESA radar system and avionics concerned Britains contributions are virtually ZERO...
@duplex2411 Britan may not of invented as many things but we are the masters of refining technology to make it more compact and efficient. Superancientmariner ..you are talking nonsense--Thomas Edison alone would beat the entire nation of Britan in terms of inventions sorry you are sadly mistaken As a matter of history there is pactically zero contribution from britain to nuclear submarine technology which is invented in America in 1955 ..and jet engine and radar are clearly invented by germans-But if you feel comfortable with what yoiu say so go ahead --But it wont change the facts.
Come to think of it, brits were the first to arc weld ships. so again nuclear subs are possible because of British inovations...........All a matter of history. :o)
May I just add to the topic:- The AV8s were never Sea Harriers but Americanised Harrier 2s.
Gas Turbines were not created by Pratt & Whitney.
1st working submersible boat was a british invention, back in the 1600s., and the nuclear submarine would not exist if it was'nt for the Steam turbine, another brit invention.
And I would suggest people do more research into the "Fore and Aft" concept of thrust.
Atomicskull- -- the harrier lacked speed and more time was spent controling than focus on the enemy the f35 has and easier method and travels past the speed of sound the harrier could not survive it a dog fight due to lack of speed. I still like the harriers design better though. Harrier will be out of service soon too
wrong! change of plans...it will be around for some time and btw up and away in the a-g or a-a attack mode there is no more time spent "controlling" than with any other jet fighter.
he speed of the harrier in a "dogfight" is less of an issue than it's high wing loading. (it bleeds energy big time) and In many cases a slower plane has the advantage in a turning engagement because of a smaller turn circle
In a BVR a-a engagement it's lack of a BVR a-a weapon is a limiting factor. with one, like an aim 120 it can hold it's own, especially with the APG-65.
lol at the yanks celebrating! The British only did this 50 years ago! 50 YEARS!!! Half a century later and the best you can do is update the technology? Oh dear.
LOL..You are an idiot..VSTOL technology of F-35 has nothing to do with your antiquated, primitive Harrier..Harriers crappy Rolls Royce engines were producing so much smoke it was an open invitation for heat seeking missiles F-35 HAS PROBABLY THE MOST ADVANCE JET ENGİNE IN THE HISTORY OF MILITARY AVIATION..ONE ENGINE IS CAPABLE OF GENERATING MORE THRUST THAN BOTH ENGINES OF THE RAFALE COMBINED. .AWESOME GAS TURBINE TECHNOLOGY CREATED BY PRATT&WHITNEY ROLLS ROYCE IS LEARNING FROM IT ..
Who's the idiot? Read my comment again you tool. I wasn't comparing the performance of the engines and arguing which one was better! Read it again. My comment states the yanks have only 'updated' 50 year old technology! My point being that you cant even invent new technology, just make 50 year old technology better! Think before you type. Idiot.
Morgan 78 you are obviously confused.. F-35 VSTOL technology is completely new and is not based on the good old Harrier and would not have been possible without the revolutionary engine technology developed by Pratt&Whitney . .Americans are the leading nation in almost all fields of Defence and Aerospace technology.. Look at their stealth technology
Britain is in stone age in comparison..They invented the nuclear submarine which is considered the greatest invention ever.
The hover system in the F-35 is very "Rube Goldberg" and lacks the elegance of the Harrier's method. The only other plane to use this method was the Yak-41 which ended up having serious problems. Once the F-35 is in forward flight the lift fan is just dead weight. The harrier can actually use it's thrust vector nozzles for added maneuverability in normal flight. The F-35 cannot. If you want a VTOL fighter you need to build a VTOL fighter from the ground up for that purpose.
It's about 75% american plane. It has new kinda hoverin system whats does not really have much similarity to Harrier. Boeing X-32 (plane that lost competion to this one) was much more like harrier.
After 60+ years of intense research on how to dodge missiles in supersonic jets, I think it's time we start developing ways to simply camp a spot in the sky and slap down whatever comes around.
i'm with u piscivorus. i say we should give it a secondary role to hover amidst clouds in the sky and act as a floating, stealthed airborne checkpoint. Or maybe make it a close air support asset, hidin in trees like an AH-64. My ideal F-35B sortie: 1.Vertical takeoff on the runway. 2. Move out. 3. Bomb some hard targets. 4.Kill some enemy air assets. 5.Once rocket/bomb ammunition is gone, find a cloud, camp there, and spray tracer fire at any enemy that passes by. X)
this is a nice plane :) hmm, btw, I thought the cockpit canopy is motorised, and not like the old WWII era cockpits where the pilots had to open and close it manually? 0:37
The F-35 has a huge payload if you add the optional exterior weapon pylons. And it is cheaper and simpler to maintain compared to the F-22. But the F-22 is a air supremacy aircraft, the F-35 is a multi-role aircraft. You cant compare them against each other.
Cuting cost. The prime objective of the JSF project was to come up with a multi-role aircaft that would stop the death spiral of cost. And Lockheed used their existing F-22 design to cut costs.
You know the joke of the single aircraft in 2050? The USAF would use it in the after noon, the Navy would use it in the evening and the marines would use it over the night.
Most dems like myself support a Strong, prepared military...Please stop spreading these vicious lies. If i were the prez...I'd double our defense spending!
I'm glad you agree we need a strong military. but as far as lies, why is it liberals are always talking about talking with our sworn enemies and throwing away our weapons? Not vicious lies, just the rhetoric I keep hearing from every liberal and democrat on TV, and people I know. Luckilly, Obama seems to have some sense about defense spending, (at least the last heard).
The JSF which is being developed by many countries around the world is now being seen as a useless aircraft that cannot outperform many of today's aircraft. The CF18, F15 and F22 and Euro fighter all outperformed the aircraft.
Having said that the whole vertical thing is cool, but even that is being fitted into a new F22 class.
Did you hear Gates has cancelled the 22 in favor of the 35? He says the 35 is a better fit for current threats and at 1/3 the cost of the 22, it's a bargain. Oops!
Yes he did cancel the F22 because its to expensive. The But you are are taking what he said fairly, he did not say "in favor of the JSF35". The only reason why the government is doing this is to stop 137 million dollar aircraft but a more cheaper aircraft. He never said anything about current threat or the new aircraft. opps I guess you're and idiot.
I'll give $5.00 to the person that finds all of the typos in the above comment. The But you are are taking... to expensive... more cheaper... and idiot. You're right, I would look like an idiot to a scholar such as yourself.
The JSF will soon be used as a plane to take down people on ground fromair to ground fights. Otherwise used as fighter jet it can fly normal also. You looking for fighter jet you think of this the, F-14, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-22. Just listing the main ones. Will be in Airforce one day!
I watched a documentary on channel 5 called "Brits who made the modern world", all about the Harrier. Without the Harrier, this wouldn't have happened. Respect.
i know no one believes me this is actually my Dad, i was there watching him when he did it! he moved there to help develop it, now he lives back in the uk
if you can't prove this video is fake than don't say anything. because i watched this video twice and i never saw any rope. your just pissed off cause you arn't able to fly it.
this is not fake, this is for real, my dad worked on this plane, this is taken in palmdale, ca. at plant 42 where he works for lockeed martin aeronautics, he brought home this footage of it and i saw this before the public saw it, dont believe me, then you can talk to the man for himself.
j s f stands for joint strike fighter its a joint effort between the usa and uk to build a replacement for the harrier jump jet except the j s f will be super sonic
damn! XF-32has a way better way to haver! cuz for F-35Hover moduel, the vertical emmit engine will be just a piece of useless crap while it's doing normal fly, and that crap is quite damn heavy!
It might be. But the harrier is old and outdated. This airplane is more agile faster and has more firepower than the harrier. Although the harrier is still a great fighter. And will probably be used by the US for many years. (Our airforce only has F16s. But they will get JSF's as replacement) (Holland).
That is bullshit. The Sea Harrier was good. Now it is old. Although the electronics are updated but it is an old plane. The JSF is just more advanced.
Can't build better?? Judging from your name you are either Australian or American... If your an aussie, I don't think you have ever made any aircraft (fucking convicts) and if your a yank then... at least we can tell the difference between our own troops and the enemy when we bomb. Don't criticize what was once the greatest aviation industry in the world, it still would be if it weren't for politics.
P.S: How people can say that JSF isn't ugly, is blind. It has an asshole for fuck sake.
Nobody had this type of plane 20 years ago. First of all, this aircraft is much moer efficient than the harrier. Also, it is far more manuverable, and it has stealth capabilities, as well as a larger weapons payload.
This plane blows the Harrier out of the water. Figuratively. Not literally. Because planes fly in the air, not in the water. Unless they get shot down over the water, then the JSF would blow the Harrier out of the water.
What amazing technology for anyone to achieve ( at anytime in history ) , regardless of who has done it before . I read some comments in this thread suggesting that it's no big deal , it's all been done before . What ignorant morons . If they lived to be a 1000 , they would never understand or appreciate the complexity of this miracle of flight . I have built over 10 VTOL prototypes of over the last 7 years and can (from real experience) tell you it's nothing short of a miracle .
Ahh whats new about this? The germans did it 1943 and the Britts built the Harrier in the 80s. It is just an old concept and for what good today? Nice plane thou!
its gud today because well firstly no need for a runway, dnt need a cat laucher on a carrier coz it can just take off froim the deck, thus reducing carrier weight, dnt need big landing area on carrier coz u just land on the flight deck vertically, these reduce carrier size, thus reducing carrier cost therefore a navy can opperate 4 smaller carriers for the cost of 2 big american sized ones. (cost figure not accurate just a picture painter)
Also, this is more efficient then any previous VTOL aircraft, it has stealth capabilities, and it has a much larger payload than any previous VTOL aircraft.
WHEN U R READING THIS DONT STOP OR SOMETHING BAD WILL HAPPEN MY NAME IS SUMMER I AM 15 YEARS OLD i have BLONDE HAIR , SCARS no NOSE OR EARS I AM DEAD IF U DONT COPY THIS JUS LIKE FROM THE RING COPY N POST THIS ON 5 MORE SITES OR I WILL APPEAR ONE CREEPY NIGHT WEN UR NOT? Ace collaboration of LM and BAe. ANd it's an obvious improvement over our Harrier - Funnily enough, the Harrier wouldn't have seen the light of day if it hadn't been for the Faulklands War.. it would have been yet another, "What's the point in this?", "How much is it gonna cost us?!" or "It'll never work" project..
Now if only the UK government of the time had seen the foresight of having APT Trains before they went sold most of the technology to Fiat for those Pendolinos - Eurofighter could have gone the same way!! - Grrrrr!!!!
not if you do it right. The engine thrust can rise very suddenly, so it only ends up going forward...if you play battlefield 2 you can see how that works.
its a petty that the british arent aloud to build them over here, even though we put 10 billion into the project so we are just going to have euro fighter typhoons they are better in some ways any way. all the pilot needs to to is look at the target to lock on.
yes they do dick face, i fit it for a job, and the jsf is a posibilty to replace the F/A 18, if the stupid yanks could get it to work properly, australia has put what 1 or 2 billion now??
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
Thrust Vectoring is the key here! The Harrier jump jet has been around along time but this has cutting edge weapon systems to boot. And this is what they show you. Think about what they dont!
Virtical Take-off of aircraft has been around for almost 2 decades now, theres nothing new about it. To take off like this is ineffective because it takes so long. That's not a hovering fan that it uses, it's its thrust being menuvered downward, and it takes more than twice the ammount of thrust power (there for more than twice the fule) nessisary than it would for a normal take-off... although it's still pretty cool.
the British Royal Navy have a small fleet of deck carriers and employ a simple ramp to launch its Sea Harriers, non of the ships have the steam catapults that the USS Enterprise and Nimitz Class use
A cackophony of moving parts. if one thing goes wrong; one bearing breaks, one door fails to open, the pilot is likely to be unaware, and crash-bang, there goes the last of your luck. but Lockheed built it; that's not likely to happen.
So because IED's kill soliders on the ground it is not wise to spend money to upgrade air capability? Ironic because we are fighting a guerrilla enemy whom scarifes themselves and their fellow country men for a perversion of the Koran? I am missing the irony.
A Fighterjet is first of all ELECTRONICS, Lockheed took the f16 aroudn the blocks 50/52/56 and merged it with all they developed costly for the f22 - out came the JSF, since its application of existing Technologies they can keep it cheap. The Eurofighter/Typhoon competition does not understand what should be so much better than their Typhoon.

j s f stands for joint strike fighter its a joint effort between the usa and uk to build a replacement for the harrier jump jet except the j s f will be super sonic
clasical1 3 years ago
Its a joint effort of the USA, UK, Italy, the Netherlands, turkey, Canada, Australia, Denmark and Norway.
Its not only the replacement of the Harrier but of the f-16 and probably more old planes, as there are 2 more versions next to the STOVL version.

I would still have the Harrier it did us proud in the falklands and still is in the gulf that is when there not being taken out from friendly fire
fister69 3 years ago
It might be. But the harrier is old and outdated. This airplane is more agile faster and has more firepower than the harrier. Although the harrier is still a great fighter. And will probably be used by the US for many years. (Our airforce only has F16s. But they will get JSF's as replacement) (Holland).
Titant2 3 years ago
I'm asking questions that by your statement I'm assuming you might be able to help me out with
1 is the JSF going to be low cost like the f16?
2 does it have lets say "apt" air-to-ground capabilities? if so will it replace the f18 as a multirole carrier plane?
3(less related) is the f22 going to be able to be used on a carrier?
I think I'm right on this when I say that the jsf is going to have a version useable by the navy.. if not please correct me
thanks for any feedback you give me
Gingerkid29 3 years ago
1. The cost will be around 200 milion euro i thought.
2. They designed the harrier like plane to be a dogfighter and small bombardments. But they also have a carrier version for what i've heared.
3. The F22 is not able to launch from a carrier.
Titant2 3 years ago
The best HARRIER was the SEA HARRIER bulit in the US for US MARINE CORP..far more advance than the British one with superior electronics.
sidewinder188 1 year ago
@sidewinder188
That is bullshit. The Sea Harrier was good. Now it is old. Although the electronics are updated but it is an old plane. The JSF is just more advanced.

NukeNEWZEALAND 3 years ago
Can't build better?? Judging from your name you are either Australian or American... If your an aussie, I don't think you have ever made any aircraft (fucking convicts) and if your a yank then... at least we can tell the difference between our own troops and the enemy when we bomb. Don't criticize what was once the greatest aviation industry in the world, it still would be if it weren't for politics.
P.S: How people can say that JSF isn't ugly, is blind. It has an asshole for fuck sake.
thevegetarian 3 years ago
We have built a few aircraft CA-12 Boomerang for example. Also judging by your comment you are English?
Where did all of those convicts come from again?
Way to promote you nation to the world.
Oh and one more thing, just to defend the US here, who stopped the war when it seamed that you were clutching straws close to the end of it?
lamagra69 3 years ago
If you're going to criticize others for their punctuation, you should also see to it that your grammar is up to snuff.
"and if 'your' a yank then..."
the use of the contraction would have given your attack a bit more credibility there, limey.

The harrier is broke, didn't you know about it's unsafe record. It's nicknamed " the widow maker".
excaliber2010 3 years ago
the english men had this type of plane 20 years ago.... they are replacing them for these planes :P
miki9017 3 years ago
Nobody had this type of plane 20 years ago. First of all, this aircraft is much moer efficient than the harrier. Also, it is far more manuverable, and it has stealth capabilities, as well as a larger weapons payload.
littlemrbandmanjr 3 years ago
i meant that it is an old idea of an plane to "hover" or lying still in the air like an heli.
miki9017 3 years ago

You can take off a plane without a runway. I think thats a practical use.
EagleEyes09 4 years ago
Ahh whats new about this? The germans did it 1943 and the Britts built the Harrier in the 80s. It is just an old concept and for what good today? Nice plane thou!
SgtDrDeath 4 years ago
The plane is a modern replacement for the Harrier. VTOL is not supposed to be a new concept.
stubones 4 years ago
its gud today because well firstly no need for a runway, dnt need a cat laucher on a carrier coz it can just take off froim the deck, thus reducing carrier weight, dnt need big landing area on carrier coz u just land on the flight deck vertically, these reduce carrier size, thus reducing carrier cost therefore a navy can opperate 4 smaller carriers for the cost of 2 big american sized ones. (cost figure not accurate just a picture painter)
Bob1701e 4 years ago
Also, this is more efficient then any previous VTOL aircraft, it has stealth capabilities, and it has a much larger payload than any previous VTOL aircraft.
littlemrbandmanjr 3 years ago
It can only carry 1000lbs more than the Harrier GR9 only if its fitted with external hardpoints,if not , carries not a lot in its internal bays

Nuker168 4 years ago
They can do that no problem. that's the whole point. the engine changes it's orientation and it, well, goes forward.
Backsplash666 4 years ago
So it doesn't like, fall a little bit?
Nuker168 4 years ago
not if you do it right. The engine thrust can rise very suddenly, so it only ends up going forward...if you play battlefield 2 you can see how that works.

Thrust Vectoring is the key here! The Harrier jump jet has been around along time but this has cutting edge weapon systems to boot. And this is what they show you. Think about what they dont!
parrdr3 4 years ago
that kind of takeoff is useful on the front lines where conventional airfields would be destroyed within days
wildhart7 4 years ago
Virtical Take-off of aircraft has been around for almost 2 decades now, theres nothing new about it. To take off like this is ineffective because it takes so long. That's not a hovering fan that it uses, it's its thrust being menuvered downward, and it takes more than twice the ammount of thrust power (there for more than twice the fule) nessisary than it would for a normal take-off... although it's still pretty cool.
MasterRender 4 years ago
the british navey have small carrier, so the hovering is the only way to land on them. they take off with a catapult thingy.
titaniumslug 4 years ago
the British Royal Navy have a small fleet of deck carriers and employ a simple ramp to launch its Sea Harriers, non of the ships have the steam catapults that the USS Enterprise and Nimitz Class use

I am missing the irony.
dwdave 5 years ago
A Fighterjet is first of all ELECTRONICS, Lockheed took the f16 aroudn the blocks 50/52/56 and merged it with all they developed costly for the f22 - out came the JSF, since its application of existing Technologies they can keep it cheap. The Eurofighter/Typhoon competition does not understand what should be so much better than their Typhoon.
