in England wasps nests can resemble a football or rugby ball and are most commonly found in the trunks of trees, bushes,cavities in buildings or sometimes underground in long grass, which can be very dangerous if this type of nest is disturbed. Luckily the critters are only really a threat from the middle of August until the end of September.
I can't believe how big that is! I would hate to accidently walk into that. You would be dead. Do you know what kind of hornets those are? I'm guessing ariel or common yellow jackets.
If this was taken in May of that year, how the nest get so big so fast? The size of that nest look like in July or August.

All those pretty bird sounds and those bastard wasps great combination. I killed a wasp nest one time felt awesome watching them burn.

No It's in Malta. They are either 'Vespula germanica' or 'Vespula vulgaris'

Is this in Australia. Culd be perennial germanicas. Way cool. I have yet to find my first nest this year.
