Thanks for making this vid and posting! I've witnessed several cats eat their way out of their eggs (we raise several species of butterflies), but never captured it--like this, any way! :-)
Im curious as to the fact how can one determine the species of butterfly in the early stages if one were to stumble upon it. Iv noticed some catterpillers with coloration and exotic spikes, ect. Is it true that some are poisonous? If so what happens when they mature into adults
@pureefficient Usually they are easy to ID even when young. Probably the most helpful thing is what species of plant you found the egg or cat on. Certain species evolved to eat certain species of plants. Most cats. are technically poisonous if you are a bird trying to eat them. A few have defenses like stinging and biting. Some don't though, I have a video of 13 cercropia cats I raised and they have many spikes. The spikes are not actually sharp and the cat is only dangerous if you are a leaf =)
Nom! Nom for your life!! I have some eggs in my house that my previous Monarch laid. I'll have to keep an eye on them! I definately want to see this happen.
yay, at my house in my garage, i saw some dead ones and alive ones so i rescued them today. i gave some leafs and water outside. now they r starting to grow
Can any of you that know about insects help me. I can't tell if their maggots or a worm or a catapillar. Its yellow small but kinda fat. It wiggles to crawl and has a black head. I don't know if it helps but I live in Anahiem, California.

@selma676 Moths have cocoons which are like stringy textured. Butterflies have chrysalises, which are smooth and clear.
