They were best friends. Only her best friend could cheer and support Shushunova in Seoul, even though her own dreams were dashed and she wasn't able to compete.
Well, she did badly at the Soviet trials, she fell off bars when her handgrip broke, bloody unlucky!! Some people think she was "punished" for her performance at the 87 Worlds (that she didn't compete in Seoul), others wonder whether she should have competed instead of Shevchenko. Oksana is my all-time favourite gymnast....
@MrMartinportnoy Her bars were weak and old-fashioned in many ways, which didn't help and I also wonder about the 87 Worlds too. it seems the the team was so deep that it made no difference. Shushunova was the favourite for the AA and Shevchenko was always a starter but was strong enough that it made little impact when her score was needed in the team when they were down to five gymnasts. She made no real mistakes. I love Omelianchek too. Shush my fav but prefered Oksana to Silivas.
@argentinearmas I think your question was addressed to another user, called emmyjo720. (this Youtube system is a bit confusing). Anyway, Oksana is my all-time favourite, although I like Silivas a lot, was on the same level as Nadia, she should have been the Olympic champion in '88. Are you from Argentina? from your user name...
Shush and Oksana together in one place - who needs music? They make their own!

@emmyjo720
Shushunova said Omelianchik was the one person she would have wanted to be in the Seoul Team

@MrMartinportnoy They were very, very close. It was amazing that Omelianchek did not compete.
