I was at this concert, sitting in an amazing seat, through the kindness of LDS friends. I believe it was in November, 2005. Renee Fleming, no Mormon, could scarcely say enough about how much she respected the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Mormon in-laws and friends extended me so many kindnesses and such warmth that words cannot express my affection and gratitude to them. We came to enjoy our talks about faith and humanity and always always respected one another. Can one ever expect more?
what a wonderful gift to be able to sing to the Lord so beautifully. to be able to show your love for the Savior in such a touching and moving way I LOVE this time of year amen Renee amen
I think this is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard: the arrange-ment, the violins, and Renee Fleming's achingly-beautiful interpretation with that gorgeous voice of hers!
Now THIS is the meaning of Christmas.
Blessings to all of you, all over the world, and thank you to Quintincouch for sharing this wonderful gift!
Oh my God... She swallows her tongue when she sings. And she breaks every phrase in the middle to breathe. Mormon or not, she still sounds like an alien.
Jesus is crying for all of you! Find the Christ within you and grow your spirituality, all of this is about the institution, not much of it has anything to do with Christ's message.....tolerance, forgiveness love.
Over twenty comments that I have read have been either rude to the LDS church, descriminating against the LDS church, or bearing false witness against the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints. Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness, and there are plenty of people disobeying that commandment. Remember to not falsely accuse please. I wish that people here would follow Christ's example of being kind to everyone you meet and trying to give service. Also, this is a wonderful song, I give it 10/10.
Christian- Someone who follows Christ's teachings an believes in Christ. Real name for 'Mormons' -The Church of _Jesus Christ_ of latter day saints. hey look at that, we have Christ in our name. We view the Bible and Book of Mormon as equal in scripture. Also, People say 'Mormons' are "not Christian" because we teach things differently. But if Mormons came first than people would call the other Christian religions wrong because they are "not the same" as 'Mormons'.
@BioTitans The Mormons do NOT consider the Bible at all. The Bible teaches that nothing should be added or removed from it (both in Genesis and Revelation) and yet the Book of Mormon does exactly that. The Bible claims that Jesus is God yet the Mormons do not acknowledge this. If Christ was not God, then He could not effectively atone for the sins of mankind.
@HLABSINC I think you are referring to Deuteronomy 4:2, not Genesis. By the way, this verse cannot mean God could not reveal more scripture after Deuteronomy 4:2 because that would negate the entire New Testament, including Revelations. Did you know that Mormons revere the Bible and that the Book of Mormon also testifies that Jesus Chrst is the Son of God, the Savior of all mankind? (See Mosiah 3:8 in the Book of Mormon). I am a Mormon. God bless.
@HLABSINC “Elohim, as understood and used in the restored Church of Jesus Christ, is the name-title of God the Eternal Father, whose firstborn Son in the spirit is Jehovah —the Only Begotten in the flesh, Jesus Christ.” 2 Nephi 25:26 - We rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. God bless!
OOPS! As I recall, Mormons view the Bible as secondary to the book of Mormon and believe in a different Jesus - The Mormon Jesus is supposedly a created being and the brother of Lucifer who is now referred to as Satan. Be very careful who you call a Christian.
@imacman9 i'm saying that because mormons believe that jesus is the divine son of god and accept the atonement as a legitimate payment for mankind's sins, they are christian. everything else seperates denominations from one another. mormonism is a denomination of christianity, but mormons are christian nonetheless.
Well done, but like all the Mormen Tabernacle Choir performances, they seem a bit overdon e for my taste - like Hollywood renditions. Nonetheless, much to enjoy. Thanks for posting.
There is a reason that members of the LDS church are encouraged not to bash, with people of other faiths and this message board is a great example of that. Its filled with trash and hate from both sides and ruins the peaceful message of this beautiful song. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
Although not everyone from other Churches agree, we as Mormons certainly consider ourselves Christan. We worship Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer and the proper name for our Church is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." " Mormon" is just a nickname. Merry Christmas!
@amiemaree Very well said! I too am a mormon who loves Christ my Savior Redeemer and God! Love the Tabernacle Choir and this tune just brings tears to my eyes. May we all remember the true meaning of Christmas and learn to be more christ like as our prophet has council us to do.
ahh, love it. a simple Christmas hymn sparks a theological debate. who's the true follower of Christ.? Raise your hand and be the first to end this 'discussion'. : )
I am Cathoiic not Mormon, but I would bet Mormons certainly would disagree with you about not being Christians! Just because they don't interpret scriptor like your church does Not make them less of a Christian.

actually it kinda does. Outside of the Church, there is no salvation. And as a Catholic, you should know that. You should pray for their conversion, not pat them on the back as they speed their way to hell.
@dcbornmike bro bro its not an issue of interpretation its an issue of a whole other set of scriptures that don't always comply w/ the scriptures passed down
@Shanniquitie Mormons are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The Book of Mormon mentions Jesus Christ many times, and mormons read the Bible as well as the Book of Mormon. In case you've forgotten, the Bible is the holy book of christians. The fact that mormons accept Bible doctrine as truth, their church name, and the content of the Book of Mormon proves that they are in fact christians. Please do not make ignorant and uninformed comments, you only embarrass yourself.
I don't need to. Read Criticism of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Wikipedia, it's an informative and very well referenced article. If you don't trust Wikipedia, just follow the references to original sources. Please explore this. Merry Christmas.
What I like most about Renee's voice is her intonation and her intensity of emotion. The overall tone is not my favorite. However, stellar performance....
ya, it was christianity dat civilized the barbaric west and the europe of today is fast reverting to its atavistic origins for abjuring the Lord's grace
Do you think God wants the very best for us? Isn't that why we are here? God made us so that we can be happy. So doesn't it make sense that God wants us to become just like him?
The Mormon belief in "spirit children" and people becoming gods after death and producing "spirit children" who come to earth and are born into Mormon families is against Christian doctrine. Mormonism is post-Christian, an outgrowth of Christianity that has gone beyond Christianity and cannot be considered Christian.
I think you would find interesting some of the writings of the Apostolic Fathers, and other early Church Fathers regarding this subject, specially pre-nicean fathers.
@PennTrafford Thou shalt not bear false witness. If you are going to say do not bear false witness, THEN DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS RIGHT AFTER SAYING THAT. Have a good day and please research before trying to say something about a church that you know almost nothing about.
