There wouldn't be 4 million Australians with convict ancestry because 165,000 convicts don't breed in to 4 million descendents.

Firstly, in the time scale it is entirely possible for 160,000 to produce 4 million currently living direct blood linked descendants. Secondly, what does 4 million have to do with it anyway? 4 million only represents around 17% of our current population, not 23%. In fact the actual percentage is unknown, but it is generally accepted to be just under a quarter of the current population.

At best, I would say that the convicts could have had 1 million descendants as of 2011. I would estimate that the average number of children women had between 1790 and 2010 would have been 4 children. So, I did a doubling convict population calculation every 25 years, and only came to 5 million by the turn of the 20th century. (cont)

Of course, if you are going to include cousins, second cousins, uncles, aunts, former roommates etc., you are going to have about 23% of Australians who know of a distant family member who was a convict. Yet, I stick with the common position that very few Australians had convict ancestry.

Interesting that he says that it is "economic" and not just racism for the bashing of indian students. This is part of the problem with Indians, they think they have an automatic right to enter Australia and if some Australians start objecting to the resulting population pressures then they are labelled racist. Yes we do have a right to object if Indians are saturating the labour market just as Indians recently put restricitons on semi-skilled migrants. Try getting an Indian retirement visa.
