rock/metal needs a punchy sound, so you put the heads backwards to give a good "thud" sound haha

um certain kinds it looks like. i looked up on musicians friend and some had it and others did. all you need is for it to be flat, then you just flip it around and play it that way. if its round or something though, be careful you could ruin your bass head.
