  • She's a Jedi.

  • The car Celie leaves in is a 1935 Studebaker Commander Roadster.

  • I think Whoopi is beautiful.

  • If Whoopi's performance wasn't Oscar worthy, I don't know what is

  • Such an amazing scene!

  • What an inspiring movie!

  • I feel you on that! I am poor black and I may be ugly but I'm here! I know so many black women that have been to hell and back and went back a few more times, myself included and it was only by the grace of God that we are still here! Praise him!

  • @Harpo What Celie said was a lie? Listen at yourself tellin a woman it's bad luck for her to laugh at a man. Just like your daddy. Chauvinistic.

  • Same Here.

  • Or, she could have left by herself......

  • Because if she left with a MAN she'd be a slut......

  • Of course she HAD to leave with a WOMAN.

  • Of course she HAD to keave with a WOMAN.

  • This shows the power of courage. I leap from the inside when I see this clip of the movie!! I only wish that Shug didnt have her in the trunk of the car--that Mary Alice couldve stayed behind!!

  • This movie is a masterpiece and will be a classic for generations to come. Whoopi and Oprah were excellent in this movie and was definitely worthy of an Oscar. But we know how that works. I have watched this movie about a half of dozen times since it first came out, and I enjoy watching it every time I see.

  • She used the force to stop him! 7:23

  • I love Celie she is my HERO!!!!

  • My all time favorite line is from this scene.

I'm poor, black. I may even be ugly, but dear God, I'm here! I'm here!

  • Anybody ever notice in black films...that the real heavy shit happens at the dinner table

    for example:

    why did I get married

    The Klumps

  • @SuperMIZZKEKE How dare you compare a Tyler Perry turd to this masterpiece.

  • @gingerbreadcorpses Well it's my comment. :)

  • The girl sitting next to Oprah, is that Whoopi Goldberg's real life daughter?

  • @WWAHP yes, that's here alright

  • @WWAHP yes..her name is alex..went to school with here at berkeley high in berkeley, ca

  • The pent up emotion that explodes from 'Celie' in this scene,is like she suddenly took on the mantle of 'His'...and all she do is hold up her FINGERS to stop him DEAD in his track!!!!Powerful stuff inDEED!!

  • Sat in that Jail!

  • ce film? une merveille et cette libération de ces femmes qui ont véçues l'enfer !!!!..quelle magique scéne !!!

Everything you done to me, Already dont to you...

  • And into CREATION! YES!!!

  • 2:49 I love it when she starts laughin!!!

  • Whoopie Goldberg is a amazing actress!

  • "The jail you plan for me is where you're gonna ROT in!"

    You go Ms. Celie

  • "The Dead has arison"....LMAO!!!!!

  • how would one "sit around and whop your ass"?

  • @Thickbodyjock LOL!! XD

  • Boy you gone sit here and let this little nappy headed girl curse you out like that. You sitting at the head of your own dinner table and you acting like a waiter.

  • This is Acting 101. I encourage ANYONE who wants to getinto that craft to watch this movie!

  • You have to have a lifetime of experiences as a woman to truly appreciate this entire scene. One of the most moving scenes on film.

Many men cannot even sit through it.

  • @goodg9 ----You speak the truth!!! Powerful stuff in that scene!

  • 6:01 KILLS ME EVERYTIME !!! Lol

  • LOL at 6:01

  • Mister can't talk about Celie not being a good cook when he couldn't cook Shug's breakfast.

  • The hell he couldn't !

  • da halito de la cia packa

  • A lot of people don't realize that Oprah ad-libbed much of this scene. The looks of surprise on the other people's faces were genuine and not acted.

  • Oprah AND Whoops should have won Oscars.

  • I heard about that. It's sad that Angelica Huston won the Oscar over her. It was PURE POLITICS!! I'm glad that the Academy has kind of changed a bit. It seems like they vote on merit more than who your father was, which was the case with Angelica.

  • it wasn't angelica houston, it was Geraldine Page who won over whoopi goldberg

  • 'he aint' wurf it ...he aint wurf it......

'"everything you done to me, already done to you" WHEW! "Dear God I'm here! I'm HERE!!!" Amen. Love everything about this scene!!!

  • When Squeak was laughing at Albert being called dead horse shit-I laughed hard as hell, too. It was strange to see Celie have so much venom behind her words. I love it-Celie OWNED Albert!

  • "Maybe she can sweep out the caboose!"

    - -"Boy, you goin' let this ol' nappy-headed girl cuss you out like that? You sittin' at the head of your own dinner table and actin' like the waiter!" LMBO that iz one funni nigga

  • if you dont like it don't look at it!

  • ummm...you posted it so EVERYONE can see your comment. duh. We all have a right to reply to comments as well. So I can reply by telling you that your comment was originally funny, but then you showed how much you hate yourself by calling anyone who might be of African descent (presumably that man is considered black in america) a ninja (my words don't have to reflect your ignorance precisely). You don't have to like my reply and you don't have to love yourself or your ppl. It would be nice tho

  • im not dumb, i know i posted it so everyone can see, i have a right to choose the words i want and how i want to say them...i LOVE who i am... BLACK, EAST INDIAN, WEST INDIAN, and ITALIAN. i dont need any education on the word Digga from you...so it would be nice if you just shut up

  • @JuicyBeBe1989 : Man Mister's daddy was funny as hell....luv that part too!

  • wonderful performances all around .....

nominated for what 10 oscars, if i'm wrong ,pardon me.....

oscar nite didn't win 1 award......a DAMN DISGRACE......

shame on the voters & the whole processs......

  • @mvp13klb59 it was 11 oscars the most nominations n history only tied with "titanic", "gone with the wind" and "lord of the rings"... guess which 1 of those films was the ONLY 1 not 2 win any oscar...

  • To those with a good ear, If you hear a bit of the background music in the scene in 7:43 to 7:47, just the few notes, you can see it's an excerpt from the chorus of "What About Love" from the Broadway version of the Colour Purple called :)

  • O WOW

  • 3rd best part of the movie. 1st being the Shug Avery church signing. 2nd being the reunion with the children at the end

  • Y'all know Beyonce stole her skills from Celie...

  • "well shes a lot better than that first wife ya married" LOL.......he ignorant

  • what is the author want to say in this scene?

    Preach on Celie, preach on!

  • I think this is one of the best scenes in the world : D

when a woman say "Stop" to someone who make her feel like shit.

  • I love this movie and i think that this is Oprahs best perfomance ever.

  • this is my shit always will be my shit always will be num 1 yes i love that line every thing u done 2 me already been done to u amen

  • love it

  • it's still so socially relevant...."your poor, your black, your ugly and your a woman, your nothing". those same isms still apply to the world today. really caputures the victimization of not only women but of those who are by society's standards not normal or up to par. really good book and movie. this is one of the only movies made from a book that i thought really captured the essence of the novel, cause most made fro movie books are crap.

  • best movie ever!

  • did i ever ask u anything i never ask you

for nothing not even your sorry ass hand

    in marriage

  • Great lines! Can't you just imagine saying that to someone!?

  • Avery good movie good on Celie for finally having the nerve to get outa there!!

  • the best movie ever

  • Excellent excellent movie. I watch it everytime it comes on.

  • This movie is one of the greatest! this was a highlight of whoopi and oprahs acting career! love it

  • This is one of my favorite scenes.when celie leaves Mister, and sofia opens her mouth.celie took control of what she wanted which was her sister and to get from under her deadbeat husband, sofia had to be brought down for her to come up.

  • R.I.P A. Caesar.

  • One of the greatest films of all time... truly captures a victimized woman in the early 30's and 40's trying to find liberation, not only from rascism that reigned in the south but from her own man who held her back and held her down because his vision of her was that she was nothingand she refused to accept that. Well worth the Pullitzer Prize.

  • And when I seed you...

Lol, I couldn't help you but left

  • omg i love this movie and this is the best part of the movie.. yall see tha way sophia just comes alive with all this stuff that she's been waiting to say. set in that jail!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Fuglier? Perhaps they would say the same about you. I would expect more out of a grown marine. Dear lord. Why must we label someone with harsh terms. We are all ugly to someone in the world. Trust me!

  • "Could be...Could be not." haha. love this movie.

  • Is'nt that Whoopie Goldbergs daughter sitting next to Oprah?

  • No her two children return at the end of the movie..Olivia is her daughter....unless your talking about real life in which case I know nothing about Whoopie.

  • Hi Geetah240, the liitle girl sitting to the right of Oprah, looks like Whoopie's biological daugher.

  • that is her

  • Oh it is. She had a bit part in the movie, and this scene was it...:)

  • I love how Shug says " Is that what you want". She was warning Misters ass lol

  • i was pissed when they arrested sophia for hitting that man

  • One of the best movies ever made. Celie & Sophia evolve in different ways but each reach the same ultimate destination: self-empowerment and liberation.

  • i love this movie

  • If youve watched it. You wouldnt think that. Its a very clever movie to show how women were treated back in that time period.

  • Meaning to dtrose..

  • Thangs gone be changin' round hiuh too!

    PRICELESS

  • why does oprah look younger every year.

  • man, thats oprah! THE oprah! i cant believe it.....

  • lmfao! i kno this whole scene by heart! i recite it all the time! i basically kno the whole damn movie by heart! the greatest black film created

  • correction: one of the greatest films created, period.

  • amen to that! the best!

  • dommage que c'est pas en français pour moi c'est le passage le plus revelateur du film!

  • Someone PLEEEASe put the scene before this!!

  • one of my favorite movies ever. The book was good too..More of this story was in the book.

  • We need some stability around here, that's for sure.

  • and when U hear Quincy Jones theme to color purple, and THEN listen to Georges Delarue's Movie theme to Our Mother's House that was written in the 1960's. U will say, Hey Quincy u stoled!!!!

  • the dead has arisen!!!! that is soooo funni!!

  • For real, The best movie everrrr ! Can I get a ( AMEN ).

  • Sofia's pit always makes me tear up

"i know dayr iz a god"

  • cant wait for the musical of this to come out wit Fantasia playin the lead role of celie!

  • To this day, it's hard to believe that Steven Spielberg directed this. It was Spielberg's first movie outside science fiction.

I think that Danny Glover is one of the best African American actors next to Bill Cosby, Samuel L. Jackson, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Will Smith, Billy Dee Williams, and Lawrence Fishburne and many other great African American actors.

  • huh??? Spielberg directed Jaws, that wasn't scifi. Duel, that was not scifi, 1941 was not scifi, humm it seems ur wrong. Tina Turner was offered the role, but she went thru shit, and didn't want to relive it all she said.
