My how Latin ballroom dancing has changed. They were 14X world latin champions but their dancing here looks tame almost amatuerist when compared to the today's international level dancers especially the current world champions, R&Y, and Donnie is one of their coaches.
@IX19UT8O You have to remember that Latin is constantly changing, the tempo of the music in latin is much slower than it was in the 70's and 80's allowing dancers to express themselves more. Donnie and Gaynor were always leading the pack, others were left to follow. Most of the techniques that are in vogue today are derived from the legacy that Donnie stamped on the Latin dance world. See how well the current WChamps compare in twenty years time?
@CG44422: The music and dance is 1000X more expressive and expansive now than it was back then, not less as you stated, especially with the appearance of the Russians. It's the Russians with their history of dancing who made ballroom what it is today. They turn their great classical dancing skills into great ballroom dancing and today's champions will compare well with champions 20-yrs from now just like the classical dancers 20-yrs ago compare well with the classical dancers today.
@IX19UT8O I didn't state that today's dancing is less than it was 20 years ago. I merely stated that with slower tempos (samba and cha cha cha) dancers are more able to get more expression into the dance. In dance it is the champions who set the trends, remember Donnie and Gaynor retired with no Russians etc being able to usurp them, hence Donnie still had more to offer idea wise etc and this is why the current WCmps go to Donnie. Donnie (Scottish) is still influencing the Russian, Poles etc.
@CG44422: You wrote “See how well the current WChamps compare in twenty years time". Today’s champs will compare very favorably with champs 20-yrs from now because they all dance like the Russians. The Russians were born to dance, it’s their heritage, in their blood. Since their arrival, they and dancers from the former Soviet bloc countries not just dominate ballroom they made it better. As for the samba and cha cha cha tempo, it’s not slower now; it’s so much quicker and expressive.
@CG44422: As for Donnie coaching R&Y, first THEY DID NOT NEED HIM, second that was bad. The president of the WDC should never ever be a coach for any contestants in any WDC competitions. By doing so it lent to complaint of favoritism. R&Y earned their world championship and do not need baggage of Donnie’s WDC position. They only way Donnie influence the dancing of the Russians, Poles, etc., is his position as president of the WDC, not as a dancer.
@IX19UT8O The samba is about 4 bars per min and cha cha cha 2 bars per minute slower tempo wise to what it was in the 80's. You say that "R&Y did not need him" you must have very good knowledge of R&Y and there coaching requirements, or you have had lessons also from Donnie leading to your knowledge of what a 14 times WC can or cannot offer a Russian dancer? There are children throughout the world who are born to dance Donnie just happened to be Scottish and Gaynor English. Money is a big help!
@IX19UT8O Yep no adjudicator should have a competitor he or she coaches in any competition! It has always been a problem. But why would Donnie be any worse than another? Donnie's dancing has already influenced the Latin dancers of today by his leadership of the styles he introduced and progressed in the 80's, 90's into the 2000's. Whether they are Russian or Bulgarian or English.
@CG44422: Let me repeat my initial comments: "My how Latin ballroom dancing has changed. They were 14X world latin champions but their dancing here looks tame almost amatuerist when compared to the today's international level dancers especially the current world champions, R&Y, and Donnie is one of their coaches." which you do not like but that is how I feel, and when the Russians arrived they changed ballroom for the better and are the best.
