I've done 2 amateur 10ks in the last 2 months and I can tell u that the average for each has been less than an hour. Maybe its because you're american and are running with a field full of fatties :D
By definition, people who never run dont run 10ks. If they are running in a 10k then they run.
If they had never done any exercise before and were obese. Any normal male under 40 should easily hit below 55 minutes at beginner level. Any male who is slower than that really needs to take a look at themself!
LOL A few things don't make any sense in this vid... like the 'shades' (It's bloody raining) and the 'math' (I'll let you figure that one out yourself)...

This guy has no clue! Triathletes no diddly about running a competitive 10K. All you need is 4 days of running a week .1 Tempo run, 1 Long run, 1 easy run and 1 day of interval speed work on the track. Resting your body between runs is also important. This guy needs to stick to the pool or go for a bike ride! Follow his advice and you will be way over-trained and crash way before the race.
Seriously? 6 min miles for a beginner's guide? 35 min finish time? Most beginners I know are suffering at 8 min/miles and would struggle to finish under 50 minutes. Marathon pace? This is clearly not a "beginners" guide.
@chronofish Exactly. The average finish time for a large, well-attended 10K is a little over an hour, so we're talking 10 minutes per mile pace. This guy must be smoking crack or something. I would KILL to be able to crack out a 10K in under 50 minutes.
If you are a male under 40 and u cant go under 50 minutes you either clearly dont have any drive in you or you are morbidly obese. Any male with average fitness should be going under 50 minutes.
@emtrading2011 Wrong on both counts. If you would care to look at the statistics of your average 10K race, the average is about an hour's running time. Sure, you get the athletes who do a sub-35 minute 10K, but that is tons of training that started in high school. The average runner would love to hit a constant 8-minute mile pace. Stop trying to compare apples to oranges, you're only embarrassing yourself.
1. The runners in an amateur 10k race still don't reflect the normal population. The people racing have an interest in running to some extent and therefore will not be as slow as the average person. 2. I've been running in some mixed 10k events recently in the UK and I can tell you now that the average time is around 50-55 minutes. There's no way that any race has an average time of 1.5 hours. I'm at 42 mins with 1 or 2 runs a week training for the last 2 -3 months.
@emtrading2011 1. Yes, they do reflect the "average population". Running/jogging has enjoyed a renewed resurgence over the last decade, more and more "average Joes" are running 5Ks and 10Ks. 2. I run 10Ks, I check the stats, you can check them for yourself, the average time in the average 10K is about 65 minutes. Do your homework and understand what you're talking about before you start yapping. You're embarrassing yourself. Again.
That still doesn't mean it reflects the average population. Clearly you don't understand how statistical representation works. If every single human took part in one 10k race the average time would be slower, maybe at around 1 hour 30 minutes. The real person who runs a 10k is not the average human being. They have some interest in running, they can complete a 10k (maybe 10% of humans couldn't), they like a challenge etc. The term 'average population' is therefore untrue.
My point is that no one cares what the average population do because they are irrelevant. We are talking here about the average amateur 10k runner, not a a member of the average population. An average 10k runner who is male (and not a veteran) should be completing a 10k in under 55 minutes. If they aren't then I'd say they were below the average 10k runner. If comparing them with the average population then ofcourse 55 is good, but who wants to be compared to fatties.
Man he sounds so easy

Solid advice otherwise....
