her luke can you do an update on the pepper seeds you just planted in this video cause every update you show never shows the pepper plants on how they look now so please
Great video! I just started my Jiffy 72 in the afternoon on Wednesday this week. Started later than I wanted to, but better late than never. Living in Southern CA has it's advantages for growing longer during the season. This is my first attempt at a vegetable garden from seed, so I am sure I am going to learn a lot. I was told to not give them direct sunlight in the beginning until they sprout. Can I use just a regular lamp light until then?
MIgardener, man, I'm digg'n this video, the catchy "grow" phrases and the fact you have a trumpet. I started my growing two weeks ago and started a new tray yesterday. I also have to steal your ideal for seed storage. I've grown out of the briefcase I was using.
@kntwombly no, it did. but zucchini is a squash, so it is in the squash section.... :) nobody got cut, its like the middle school football team, you try out, you make it!
I started my Super hots (peppers) the last few weeks of November. Bhut jolokias, and the such take a long time to germinate so i figured to start as early as possible
I am glad you learned a lot from me, and the others, but i might add one thing though. gardening is a self motivated thing that you sometimes have to blaze your own trail. it is a hard consept to master, but for instense tomatoes and peppers. I can grow them yes, but praxxus just really knows some secret even though he can walk me step by step how he does it... it won't work for me, so i have to find waht works for my area. its all because of soil diversity. what is in his soil, isn't in mine
I've had real problems with starting things indoors in the past mostly because I didn't take the time to learn from other ppl's real life experiences. We live in Michigan's Upper Penninsula so some things we really do need a good headstart on.I started germination of quite a few different seeds in paper towels yesterday and will attempt to plant those that germinate shortly.Hopefully with new found knowledge from your channel, Ray, Pain Chaud, Diane and many others we'll have better luck. Thanks!
I live in Chicago, Il. My grandpa always started his plants indoors too. I lived in Az. for 32 years and have now moved back home. To his house as a matter of fact. I have no clue when he used to start his indoor garden. Do you? Thanks
hei i send a letter twoo days ago with romanian gigante tomatos seeds i am from romania i hope my letter will get to yu if it get plz send me seeds i note in the letter great work chep on.
I don't live in a cave But I do live in the city. I don't have a lot of window to start my garden till later in the season. what kind of plants can I start early whithout a lot of sun. If I can use Lights what kind of light bulbs should I get?
@fayjason i would say just to wait, if you start stuff indoors with isufficiant lighting, your plants will become unhealthy and leggy. if your going to grow under lights, a simple 100W cfl bulb will do just fine! and its only about 3 bucks...
I have a gardening question, every year when I plant my peppers and tomatoes they either dry up fast, they are planted in a raised bed but they get full all day sunlight. Is there a good vegetable that grows better in full sun, or do I need to add something to the soil?
(my question continued) window that only gets direct sun in the morning. How can I start seedlings by this window the best possible way to make them the least leggy as they can be. And if they are leggy is there a way to fix it? Haha but Im really curious becuasr all the seeds I start here become to weak and leggy and die.
I have a important question that you should mention on your next video because many people I would assume have this problem. I don't have any room for a growlight fixture and the only source of light I have for my plants is a
Nice, we started the new peppers in the first half of December, they are descendants of the cali wonder we got from Praxxus last year. They were so amazingly sweet, so hopefully they didn't cross with the jalapenos : )
Got my greenhouse up yesterday! Started tomatoes and squash today, planted carrots, lettuce and onions last week. I don't play by the rules either, I plant when I feel like it! Oh by the way, HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY LUKE!!!
Response to your question..... I started my first plants about the second week of Jan this year. I put them outside for sun and bring them in the house for overnight so frost doesn't kill them all. When they first sprouted they were nice and healthy looking this past week they don't look so good. I think it's because the sun went away and started raining..... STUPID Central Coast California weather.
Nice seeds! I have Hillbilly, Arkansas Traveler,Yellow Pear,Japanese Trifiel ,Golden Peach and cherry Tomatoes started already Also Rainbow bells moon and stars watermelon, zucchini, Luffa Purple peas and pablano peppers They are all growing great I started them about 3-4 weeks ago
hey migardener i Just started my seeds 1 hour ago and i was just wondering when do you usually transplant your seedlings because i usually start in march but i decided to use your idea.
@MIgardener As for the pomegranate, yes a little. But I've been trying to grow lemongrass for a while, and this is the first time I've had any luck with it rooting.
@TheAnimalPeople the money for cancer research? that went o the Fred Hutchenson cancer research center last year... I will be doing it again this year :)
Have a great growing season Luke.. Will start tomatoes and Peppers in March and April, I have perennials growing now, and lots of flower type seed, plus indoor radishes,lettuces,kale,spinach.. oh and one large potato.. :D
I started mine a month ago hahaha. Yes they are getting quite big too hahaha. YOur crakcing me up with the trupet , I just woke up from a afternoon nap :) Did you get the seeds i send ya yet :) God bless!
I started some Pepperoncinis, mini bells, and a few types of tomatoes at the end of December :D Last year I started a lot of seeds in February but I had no idea on how the lighting should be and everything got leggy and died. But this year I am armed with knowledge!
@DrowSkinned thanks! i worked on it for about 2 weeks, and im coing to get 10 moisture obsorbers, and all the seeds are heirloom, so it is like a survival seed bank. and the envalopes are light proof. as well as the container. thats why i chose it over the plastic toats i was using... great for everything I have.
Regarding the banana peppers and also the California peppers.. They grow great in California near the coast... where the weather is cooler.. both prolific in the right climate.
I'm not starting too much indoors this year most of what I tried last year did due to lack of space for larger pots when transplanting :( also I think I did too many too soon. This year I'm going to start first week in march to plant out in May and hope for the best. Wow great music on the horn sir and not a finger moved that I could see that's amazing :D lol thanks for sharing as always look forward to updates.
@freakygeaktwo those are called taps... no finger needed, it is just bouncing octifes up and down. hard to do, but i played trumpet for like 4 years. so i got pretty good. it is more predominatly heard on a bugle.
@MIgardener oh wow good for you goes to show how much I know about instruments lol now I got to ask did you really do the video that early in the morning ?
Love your video! I am an off & on Gardener. I want to do it full time, still working on animal & insect pest problems. I started my seeds this January early! My first seeds were bell peppers & I bought onion bolts too. I currently have been seed purchasing every week so that I don't have everything coming all at once cause I do canning too. Kids talked me into a Pizza Garden. So I am currently growing parsley, basil, oregano, and Roma tomatoes also. This next week I will be getting the garlic a
Loved the special effects on the opening. I started mine on January 1 with a dozen different types of tomatoes. Growing them in regular dirt so I need an extra month because they will be growing really slow.
I'm growing Large Red Cherry, Campari, Pineapple,.Big Rainbow, Chocolate Cherry, Red Pear, Green Grape, Wild Cherry, Black Brandywine, Isis Candy, Red Grape and Purple Tomatillo. Got all the seeds via SASE for postage plus a dozen more!
@PraxxContestant wow! those are some very beautiful varieties! i am impressed! my hat goes off to you :) I have 98 varieties.... I may only get to plant about 60 though!
I have got to make a list of all the seeds I have right now. Thanks for my seeds! :) I have entered John's at Growing your Greens and hope I get some free seeds from him, too.
When do you plant your starts out into the garden? I'm in zone 3 so nothing gets set out until the end of may, beginning of June. So I usually start tomatoes and peppers third week in march. But you are inspiring I just might start a couple of tomatoes and peppers plants just to see how big I can get them. By the way I like your seed starting tray, where did you get that, if you don't mind me asking?l
@prairiepatch I don't mind at all! right now you can probably get them online, they are just called a 72 cell flat. or you can go to most greenhouses or garden centers and they sell them. same name, just a 72 cell flat. or for transplanting your plants to can then move into a 36 cell flat which will allow your seeds to spread out more, while not taking up much space, and then from 36 you would go into an 18 cell flat that isn't really a cell, it just holds the 3x3 square pots.... hope that helps
@crosspecans I either stick them in a plastic baggie after pollinating, or I just get lucky.... I really haven't had much of a problem with cross pollinating because although they are open pollinated, they are very hard to cross pollinate, you really have to jam the two flowers right together to get a successful cross.
:) nice group of peppers there! I've only started my tomatoes, carrots and cucumbers, now I just have to make room for me to plant my peppers!!! Hope ya got the tomatoes I sent. Happy Gardening, keep the great videos a coming!!!!
Hey Luke! I am just going to buy the plants from the store and I will save the seeds in my 2013 garden. This is my first year that I am able to harvest what I grew in my garden!!!! I am not starting seeds because they seem to get leggy with the sunlight and I don't have any more room for a growlight or more plants! And great plants and set up!
@Incredibleisaac2 hey! its nice to see you commenting again! i thought you were dead for a while! nice to see the ghost of isaac still cares about his friends!
I was planning on starting pepper seeds on the first. I still need my lights up and going. Already started some onions. They are doing great and sprouted in 4 days.
I started my seeds earlier this year (beginning of jan). My last frost is the end of feb/march usually here in california. I'm trying the CA Wonder Bells this year too!
Just wanted to say I live in Michigan too, and also enjoy growing plants in my grow room! I thought I was the only one..lol Youtube has proven otherwise!
For me, I just start it randomly, lucky me it doesn't matter because no frost here your jealous :P. I started some pepper seeds, the mega supper hots like the bhut jolokia or the trinidad scorpion!
Dang! 47 views at midnight. Don't gardeners sleep? I thought I was hearing things earlier. Thought the second coming was upon us when I heard the trumpet blow. Come to find out, it was you. Go to bed. You can respond to comments another time. (dad) hahahaha
@jwmphotog try 82 views :) its blowing up! :) oh, and howd you llike the trumpet playing? hevent played it since 8th grade! looks like I still got it!
@SunnyMoon2010 I will :) but I'm not to concerned about it... I have nothing to hide and im clearly not a terrorist. lol. I think the only thing me and and a terrorist hav in common is we both videotape ourselves.
I live in zone 10a so I can grow whenever but, yes, I start plants inside. This is actually my first year growing a vegetable garden, so I can not wait!
I grew Giant Marconis. They're delicious and store extremely well in the freezer. GREAT choice with the Rutgers Luke! Rutgers tomatoes were originally started by Campbells soup company for their tomato soup. Rutgers University took them over and improved them. They're a bit disease resistant & excellent taste. I'm trying Marglobe. If you don't have seeds from them I'll send some your way.
Also I'm having this strange need to grow big or go home....Oh wait, nevermind. It was just a stroke. :)

Dang! 47 views at midnight. Don't gardeners sleep? I thought I was hearing things earlier. Thought the second coming was upon us when I heard the trumpet blow. Come to find out, it was you. Go to bed. You can respond to comments another time. (dad) hahahaha

Not sure if you know this... storing seeds are considered a potential terrorist by gov. Watch out.
While you at it, check out the senate bill 510.
