John, in the case of you water hoses there in your raised beds, how do you ensure that the water you a watering with does not have Chlorine or Chloramine in it?
Question: I'm growing tomatoes in 5 gallon pails, and the first few tomatoes have what I believe to be Blossom End Rot. Have you heard of or experienced this? Also, I read online that adding Epsom salt to the soil when planting in the spring can prevent BER. What do you think? Thanks in advance.
@waylonhartwell I know hes done some hydro, but I would love to see him elaborate and experiment more on it. maybe some DWC (deep water culture) tomatoes or something like that. that would be a good vid.
I appreciate your help but you take way to long to make a point. People are so busy today, I am not able to watch the next 14 minutes...so I am leaving at 10 minutes. You couldn't have made the points well in 10 minutes on this--? I think so.
Time is at a premium for many of us, please try and watch the time! But thank you for your info.
I subscribed to you Thank you very much for all your videos I love them,..I read something interesting in the Word of God it's says "GOD PLANTED A GARDEN" when I read that I was blown away dude this planet was created by God his power is what makes those plants grow not NATURE, give the God that made you and everything you can see some credit for crying out loud.
@Joelx415 If you don't have a filtration system installed, you can fill up 5 gallon buckets or 55 gallon barrels with water, and let it sit for a day. The chlorine should be greatly reduced. If you put some air stones in the water and bubble the water, it will be even better.
I was so happy to see my oregano came back. Last year was the first time I gardened in a raised bed. You videos really helped. But you ruined store bought tomatoes for me ;) I was shocked at how flavorful cherry tomatoes can be when you grow them yourself. Thanks for all the videos and have a great day!
In general, no. There have been some isolated incidents (usually when a organic fertilizer that contains some blood and/or bone meal was given to me) when I have used it, but in general, I do not use it.
I hear ya with the chlorine! Here in Ontario, the water in London is 1 step away from pool water..lol You can actually smell it, there's so much. lol When I had tanks, I had mad ammounts of 2L bottles with no caps just because of that.. (for the tank) when I replant stuff I go a step further.I loosen up and spread out the roots, so they have that much less growing to do to go nuts.. ; ) *thumbs up*
Mycorrhizae seems to be the latest fad in gardening right now. I'm not playing into it. Keep your soil PH at the proper range and you'll do just fine.
@Tommyr Plants will be fine without it, but they will do even better with it. It's all up to the grower, and how well he or she wants the plants to perform. For people like John who have limited space, or people like me who only have a few raised beds, it's even more important to try and increase production as much as possible to get the most reward for the time and money we invest.
Another way to de-chlorinate your water is to let it set in an uncovered container, such a barrel you would use to collect rain water, for 24 hours and it will gas off. Thanks for another great video John!
Mycoffhizal Fungi Packs are the biggest rip off imaginable.
You can easily produce your own innoculum by simply going to a non fertilized patch of ground, preferably underneath a hedge and remove a sod of earth with natural grass growing.
This soil will contain loads of natural mycelium from the fungi and then it's just a matter of keeping this lump of earth and it's grasses growing and then add some of the soil whenever you need to innoculate your transplanted plants by mixing it with the roots
Please help!! I'm growing green and yellow beans and Squash plants. These are still very small plants (about a foot) I noticed some small white bouncy bugs in the soil and in the stems and leafs. Also some small darker ones..They are very small but the leafs that these bugs touch turn yellow and die off. Any suggestions as to what they are and how to naturally kill them. I'm growing an all Organic garden and I'm a first timer.
@lestempsnoir They could be a lot of different things and your leaves may be turning yellow for lots of different reasons too. But, one thing you could try is spraying your plants with a mixture of water soap and garlic. Good luck.
they dont wanna change the industry cause it cost to much that why it is there its cheap its bad for you people know that they just dont care end of story ...
Love your enthusiasm, + attitude, and personal story, John! I really look forward to watching your videos each week (both accts) & I have learned a lot. Also, I am currently increasing the raw veggies & fruits to my diet. Even made kale chips recently & shared with colleagues. :) Keep the videos coming! Best, RebeccaF
jamie is awesome. some kids dont even know where there food come from. they just think it comes from the grocery store. since I put my raise beds in last year a few of my neighbours started to do it. some say that it brings down the value of your house...... My property tax went up due to "improvement to the land" now my property tax is now 200.00 more then last year aaaarrrggghhhh I wonder how much it will go up after I am finshed. :(
The chlorine in tap water is not enough to kill the mycorrhiza in the soil or the bacteria in your gut. If it was we'd all be dead or have C Diff (clostridium difficile).
Im no tomato expert.. but what I have noticed is that determinate plants sometimes have thicker stems, and they do not tend to grow as fast. (thus staying more compact)
@CanadianPatriot1973 Best way I can tell you is that a determinate is usually defined as a plant whose vines terminate in a flower cluster. So at the ends of the branches if they end in blooms then its highly likely its a determinate. Most determinate tomatoes as John has said will stay more compact and usually are about or under 4 feet tall. Most all varieties with bush in the name are determinate or semi - determinate. They also will load up with fruit in a 2-3 week period. Hope that helps
Yes! I was going the mention this in the video.. Go to someones house that uses Mycorrhizae and get some of their soil, and then put that soil in your garden. Their soil will contain the beneficial fungi and will innoculate your soil. when you add it to yours. Another way, is go to the forest with undisturbed soil and get some soil from nature. Of course, its best to purchase small amounts of Mycorrhizae to ensure consistant results. As YMMV with the other methods.
@desertskynm2 here is a great company for beneficals, the product is by Hydro Organics, google them and search the products! they are affordable, you get a lot for your buck and the shelf life of the product is 2-3yrs

So watering the garden defeats the purpose. I have no water filtration system, does that mean, I'm killing all the living beneficial organisms?
