The Costa Concordia's captain reminded me of this equally horrendous tale. Remember back in old timey times when captains of luxury ships had some frigging balls?
I think that this incident has more to do with the Costa Concordia than the Titanic, as many are comparing it to that. The ship rolling over, chaos loading the lifeboats, the crew not helping the passengers, the captain leaving the ship before the passengers; the two disasters are very similar.
High five to the unsung heroes in this drama - the highly effective air force of the good old South African army. They knew about the event and organize helicopters from Pretoria and Cape Town to Durban The choppers took off from Durban and started the rescue operation at day break. Not a single person died in the sinking of the Oceanos.
My parents were on this ship in 1987 and my Mom said water was leaking from the light fixture on the ceiling of their room and they were in the middle of the Atlantic sailing from Miami to the Mediterranean Sea.
@dulcetqm2ggp No, they were on this ship several years earlier but they thought it was in rough shape considering the water leaking into their room from the ceiling light fixture.
omigod those entertainers are heroes, that captain is an ass hole, "abandon ship is for everyone?!" i mean, yes, but you're supposed to make sure they get off safely before you do!!! wow, i'm mad. very very mad. You absolute d*ck head
The Captain can not get off his ship until all the passengers (or all that able, can get off) are off the ship.
It is considered honorable for a Captain to go down with his ship. Even the Nazi German Captains knew this!
Thank GOD (or gods/goddesses) that the 2 entertainers were there, and with the heroic help of the African Air Rescue all got off the ship. Those men were the last off. There is truly a place for them in paradise (and lots of x-mas cards).
That captain is a true coward. He's the type of guy who should be urinated and spat upon whenever someone feels like it. I would make an international law identifying him and saying it was ok to do that.
@selienagalzo i think you mean to thank the two guys who saved everyone by alerting the South Africans and staying aboard to run the evacuation. They could have gotten in a boat and left, but the hung in and kicked ass. Hats off to them...utmost respect. The South Africans get an assist.
August 4, 1991. My parents wedding anniversary was just 10 days later. their were married in 1988. My parents & I were living in California at the time, & therefore not on the Oceanos. But wow. Oh, my parents have been happily married for almost 23 years. I turned 23 last December.
I'm racing across the South Atlantic in 2011 Heineken Cape to Rio ocean yachtrace, with one of the helicopter pilots that received a medal of honour for the rescue effort. Keep an eye on S/Y RatCATcher and see if we win the multihull cruising class!
I think the captain should be charged with neglegance. And never be allowed to be a captain of ANY ship as long as he lives. As far as maritime safety. I know its a martime law that life boat drills have to be conducted within 24 hours after they set sail. But most cruise lines now days do them before they set sail incase something happens within 24 hours after setting sail.
I swear that the captain is meant to go down with the ship.
The captain really shouldn't get a way with that, i mean its a basic human instinct isn't it to like help people. It just shows that some people are nasty characters. Oh i hope that captain has his just deserves!! But the two guys should be treated like Heroes!!
Does anyone know if the crew was charged criminally? I mean, is that legal for them to do that? Especially the captain... "if they want to stay, they can stay"... what kinda crap is that?
Stacy Keach's description of "the Captain and his cowardly crew" is spot on! They're a bunch of selfish and despicable cowards! Do you have any other clips from this episode? If so, could you post some others?
@yuchoobstalker, on the other hand leaving the ship has its dangers as well. Abandoning the ship is the last resort when everything else fails. Of course if the ship is sinking rapidly, it's better to GTFO ASAP, but in some cases the passengers could be safer onboard the bigger vessel than being tossed around in a small lifeboat in a storm.
After seeing the video in video advert for UFC I'm reminded why I cancelled my cable TV years ago. Jesus fucking christ that's distracting.

An amazing rescue. Cruise vessels are big and strong, but the ocean is bigger and stronger. She's her own energy.

@ChicaTheLadybug That doesnt mean the water was coming from the sea, could have been a leaking pipe

@a01087483 I didn't say it was seawater, I said the ship was in bad shape. There was water leaking into their room from the ceiling light fixture.
