That is dutch player Ivan Sokolov. It was strange to see him in this 4 player tournament as all of the other three much outclass him, and he got trounced and got a zero score I believe.
Fascinating to put faces (and body language!) to the names. I love the crystal chess sets on the serving carts. Mam.-Top.: (1:04) 1 .. d5 2 c4 c6 3 Nc3 -- at book speed. (1:55) 9 .. b5 10 Na4 c5. (2:28) 27 h4. (3:12) 41 Rc7 -- you can see Mam's Q on h8. (4:39) 42 .. Qh5+ 43 Qxh5+ Nxh5, now Mam. thinks for exactly 15 seconds(!!) and 44 Re7 winning a pawn. (5:35) Top. 4 seconds and 47 .. 0-1.
the key to televising chess is to have good commentary and annotation during live competition. cut away to produced pieces during down time and express surprise at an unexpected move then discuss the possible ideas. more fun then watching poker imo btw i love watching poker. blitz games would be more boring whats the point?
watching chess is not like watching football but we are so use to being spoiled by entertainment that we do not appreciate the artistic merit in watching chess. i think it should be a mixture of a good view of the board coupled with closeups of the players faces to see their expressions etc. but it has to be done in a way that the players are not distracted in any way.
Who cares about the expressions ? That's silly. Only the moves count. In fact, I usually don't even care to see the players' faces, just a computer-simulated outline of their moves.
if these are only "supposed" grandmasters, who do you consider a real one? BTW, the tournament is held every year, and it is quite an event in the world of chess. Traditionally, there is always one dutch player taking part in this high class tourney, a job which was done by Jan Timman for a very long time.
I think you misunderstood me, I had not heard of these people playing in my town at all while supposedly they are grandmasters, so I was expressing my surprise.

Every time Judit Polgar leaves the board she is taking her handbag with her. she is thinking that Ivan Sokolov is gonna steal her purse.

It became quiet after the game really started

It's so loud there even just from the video picking it up. I would really have been bothered by that if I was playing.

Why do they always write stuff down after every move ? Are you allowed to peek at what your opponent is writing ?
mozart20dlubos 4 years ago
they are simply writing down every move in algebraic chess notation. eg 1: e4 e5 2: Nf3 Nc6 etc etc
DeadAirSpace88 4 years ago
lol...they're writing down their secret plans!!
Top Secret!

I'm a chess player and I agreee wuth thaitan that watching chess isn't that much fun. It's a better idea to post shorter games...Blitz or rapid

Funny, I live in this hillbilly town called Hoogeveen and had no idea there was a game of chess between these supposed grandmaster's going on.

how can u think with all that noise and camera flashes
ausrose 5 years ago
i'd say the background noise only reflects the environment of the camera, not of the board.

Maybe because they aren't that interesting to watch :p Just kidding. I want to see some of Anand's rapid chess games.
