@Doooku Lol...strains? Turn up your speakers. And any "strains" you hear are bad audio. In 1979 he still had complete control. Besides we weren't actually in the audience...listen to the crowd...and he's in Italy. Trust me, if he didn't sound good, they would let him know.
@Doooku The world is full of knowledge (about singing) .... You would be well to seek some out, because your statement could not be more incorrect. You obviously have a lot of work to do. You might also want to quit commenting on things you know nothing about. Please. You embarrass yourself.
@Doooku I'm not going to waste my time. I've heard hundreds of Pav's arias and don't need to go listen to one mistake. If that is your response to what I said, you're a true moron.
I listened to huddreds, if not thousands of, Pavarotti's records too. If you respect the fact, you would say that this man was good, but not the No. 1 in terms of true vocal ability, artistic expression, and understanding to music. Compared with the greats like Caruso, Bjorkling, Monaco, Pav has long way to go. Do you agree with me?
@Doooku No I don't agree with you. Pav was one of the most consistent singers that continuously performed at the highest caliber. His technique was beyond criticism. The other great tenors you mention did not go out of their way to act on stage and neither did Pav. It was the era of standing there and singing basically. A long way to go? you must be joking. When you said originally that he strained it said you don't understand how the voice is produced/supported with grunt/effort.
@Doooku Pav had one of the most flawless techniques in singing, beyond criticism. When you said he strained, do you understand how the voice in opera is produced? By grunting/supporting with very firm abs; that is what you saw. A long way to go? You must be joking.
I sing this aria probably better than most of the tenors. I can effortless hit High D, E, F with good control and timbre. If you pay attention VERY Carefully for the last note, you would hear what I talked about. There was certain degree of stretch. Please compare the version of Mario del Monaco. You would know the difference. OK?
@Doooku Not sue what the purpose of microscopic analyzation is. Would love to hear your voice. If you can effortlessly sing d, e, and f, this would be an operatic voice?
It was ridiculously expensive to telecast opera until (about) 1977 I believe. The logistics were tricky... extra lighting etc. few houses bothered taping performances.
Well, I think that the recording from the wings of the stage is actually the premiere. The video surfaced when someone found a copy of a little fun video that circulated around the staff of the Met, and some bits do have sound, Pavarotti's final C included. This C is exactly the same length as the audience recording of the same performance. So if the whole thing surfaces, it's going to have sound.
I'm actually in contact with Richard Bonynge, who remembers being asked whether he'd mind if the performance was taped. He may have some leads, he's getting back to me.
Well, she replied to my initial letter and responded to a few questions, but she isn't particularly interested in her own singing while Bonynge adores her singing like no-one else's and is just as eager to find this video as I am.
She sounds very gracious. She must be inundated with letters. I am glad to hear he is still a big fan of hers, after all these years. Its quite sweet, isn't it?
I had the great good fortune to hear Pavarotti four times in person. But even in recordings he makes the tears come. There are some fine tenors out there, but none to match Pavarotti. There may never be.
Great expressivity, great tone, great technique...incredible...I had the priviliedge of meeting him, and he was gracious. What a voice! God made that!
when critics and so called critics talk about the size of THIS instrument they are mostly wrong. not only did this instrument have enough weight for all the so called BIG tenor roles but his fabolous technique allowed pav to sing throughout the tenor rep.!!
this voice had it all. top to bottom was one voice. this didnt happen by accident and IT wasnt without hours of long and hard work. skille that only technicians like pav could master. up till the day he died he was a student of the human voice! he spent hours ans hours singing legato scales to link the air with the pressure of the voice! cheers to all students of opera
I try to move forward and find another tenor to follow the career of. It is so hard, THIS voice.... where is another like this voice. I like Giordani but THIS voice is irreplaceable.
I keep looking for this sound in all I listen to.....there will never be another like him
I, too, keep thinking there must be another great voice out there, not the same as Pavarotti's but a great voice- perhaps not in my life time though. He must have been the inspiration for many thousands who would not have been singers otherwise, and any one of them may be the the next great Italian tenor.
I am the skeptic. I just don't believe another voice will ever replace this one. Not for me and not in my lifetime. Maybe not even within another century. These vocal cords were kissed by God. Maestro Pavarotti was The Special One.
I agree with your musical opinion, but it is sad your vocabulary and lack of class dirty up this honoring of The Maestro. You owe the online world and Luciano an apology.
the last B-flat was such a stretch. Pavarotti had lots of strains in his voice.

Franco Corelli, Guiseppo di Stefano and Jussi Bjorling are some of the tenores who will forever be considered better then Pavarotti (overall).
It is important to note (overall).
Still Pavarroti is a wonderful singer.

So much of his work available on dvd is from this time [1979-1985] its as if he never was off the stage for six years.
Why is there so little film footage of him before this, when there are so many great audio recordings?
Or are they out there, and I am just not finding them?

How terribly sad.
I suppose its better to have the sound recordings than nothing all, but it seems a great pity no one thought of posterity at the time.
I would love to see the whole of the fille du régiment with Joan Sutherland that earned them their 17 [?] curtain calls.
I suppose lots of people would.
