  • This concerto has the most amazing introduction of all. So dramatic!!! 00:33

  • Don't worry about the Chinese. When Western Civilization was still in "cave man" mode, the Chinese were performing extremely complex pieces on highly sophisticated instruments. I had the honor of seeing a group of four non-westernized Chinese musicians perform at a Boston Early Music Festival. They were paired with a French quartet (with sheet music?). Guess who won.....? If these Chinese could play quartertones, etc., surely they can tackle a mere keyboard.

  • Mooi

  • Bravo bravo, bravo!!!

  • Hi there! Definitly, thank yOu, grazie, merci, dunke...fOr the Others, & real Y....... listeners* !!!

  • Hi ! HuUuUu! OY! (FOR ALL THE YOUNG JUSTIN BridOu BIEBERED AMERICANS & OTHERS EUROPEAN DECADENTS) = ! NO, GRIEG -NOT ...GREG, GRAIG Or GREIG ;)- PIANO CONCERTO OP.16 N°1 WAS -NOT- COMPOSED FOR A TiBETAN BELL, A BANJO OR EVEN A TAMBOURINE OR 2 ASHOLES, OK ?! CAPISC'`" !?!?!i!...OR NOT ?...!... :-(( HA HUN HUNNNN ;-O))

  • cool , super GRIEG to GRIEG ekstra!!!!!

  • cool performance!

Have u noticed that the soloist made an awesome dancemovement with his shoulder at min 1:20 ? : D

  • whoever said that greig composed this on a banjo is an arsehole-.-

  • @ruthheartmusic What? He composed it on a banjo?!? This is incredible, thanks for mentioning!

  • @TVMonitoringPMS Did you seriously believe that...you're kidding right?

  • Whoever the fucking dick coughing was, needs to be shot (in the gut)

  • @seedaripper2010 Sometimes I get the feeling that viewers like you watch great performances of classical pieces with enormous concentration, just so they can rant against the profane audience (losing all appreciation of the beautiful music in the process)

  • i know the 14 years old guy who can play this son exactly the same

  • greig did comopse this and stop arguing you lot and just listenmythras90x

  • How can he look at the music sheet while playing so many notes?

  • i still prefer the Eric Morecombe/Andrew preview version

  • I was expecting a high five at the end

  • So passionate. True to its form. Wonderful piece and wonderful video. Thanks.

  • Look, the fact is that there are just as many good American/European pianists as there are Asian. But, considering that this music is in no way part of their culture, it's surprising how many classical pianists there are that originate from Japan, China, and Indonesia. I think that's all that person meant by it.

  • Una corda last part he did not do it

  • @1:00 --have a banana :P

  • @Wildrage101 What???

  • @bebebobo683 Its from Bill Bailey and his examination of cockney music in the classical repertoire

  • bravoooooooo

  • wan't there a Tom and Jerry Cartoon of this?

  • @HawlHeed You are prolly thinking of Hungarian Rhapsody no. 2 by Liszt

  • @HawlHeed yup

  • Beautiful!

  • Well I'd have to say that anybody can be the best at anything if they start at it as early as 3 years old. Its part of Asian culture to start off the younglings at a young age so to benefit from that advantage of said starting at a young age. Shane did a great job on this piece and my hats off to him. I need to update a decent vid of myself. Perhaps a mazurka in a minor by Chopin.

  • Only on YouTube would you have rants on the comment section of a video of classical music.

    For the love of God.

  • @yaintime5001 I know right? For Gods sake, couldn't I enjoy some classical music without having people arguing in the comments? And, yes, we Chinese people are quite talented. Just Kidding! :p

  • @chris110012

it was seven months ago, you faggot. it was aimed at the dude who said this was originally composed on the banjo. people found the comment funny.

p.s. i know what retardation is; you have demonstrated it incredibly well, dipshit.

  • on my life - i laughed at Bonnies comment - not many people know that because it just aint true

  • fantastic performance, pity the sound quality on the camera is shit

  • one of my favorite pieces

  • This was a great performance - the soloist made the music leap off the page, all nuances and dynamics were there from ppp to fff and the accompanist was wonderful. I played this concerto when I was a teenager too. I can't get over some of the stupid comments on this page, some people are really out to lunch.

  • Comment removed

  • Ocatves reasonably accurate?!?!? What the hell are you talking about?

  • absolutely amazing coordination between the two piano.

even in the beginning, both the soloist and the accompanist put their hands on the keys before they begin at the same time. =]

  • Gee, he's Asian--what a surprise.

This is really well done. <3 I love this piece.

  • ya know....being asian doesn't exactly make you good at the piano. it is actually really offensive/racist that you think that....

  • @ extremelymodest:

It's offensive that I think many Asians are musically talented?

    Sorry you're hypersensitive.

  • @birdiaction

I didn't see extremelymodest's comment, but it is true that many Asians are extremely talented. I know plenty of them! Most in music, though a good portion in math, and some in other areas as well. I think it's great. Sometimes I wish I were as good at the piano (or other things) as they are, but hey, good thing it's not like you have to have a certain background to be talented! or I'd have no musical ability at all :)) haha. Love this song!!

  • @beccamesser Yeah, so many Asians I know are really talented! some person was offended when I made some comment about Asians commonly being good musicians, but I didn't mean it badly... I wish I were that good, too! =) and yeah, it's a fabulous song O_O

  • @birdiaction its not that asians r more talented than others, its just a matter of practice and hard work thats all.

  • @birdiaction You do realize that the vast, vast majority of "Asians" don't play music at all, right? What you mean is, "Self-disciplined Asians who come from good families and have the disposable wealth to spend their time becoming great musicians" are musically talented.

I.e., you aren't saying anything meaningful at all.

  • @sparsematrix I am shocked at the amount of hype and commotion my one little comment has caused. Some people get so easily worked up. And I wasn't trying to write some great meaningful piece of work. It was a simple YOUTUBE COMMENT. Wow.

  • @birdiaction I thank you for the comment. But its just that our parents make us work hard *Grins*

  • @birdiaction i gotta disagree. it's untrue that due to race or racial background, any person has an innate musical talent, or indeed other talent, nonexistent in other races. it may be true that there are more asian pianists/musicians, and if there is any causative factor behind this statistic, it is probably more of a cultural/socio-economic factor, than anything to do with genetics. i personally think no-one is really 'musically talented'- they just work hard to get where they are.

  • @lnicoll100 Even if it is due to cultural factors and not genetics--and I never believed it was due to genetics--it is still because they are raised in Asian societies. And I'm not saying this person didn't work hard to get where he is! I'm just saying that many Asians I've encountered are really good at music. God, I wish people would stop taking me so seriously.

  • @birdiaction Oh, I just read your last comment (about cultural factors). Then, I know you're not stupid :-) even though I still don't see the point about all this ASIAN LVL stuff ;)

  • @birdiaction Bitch please, a bunch of asians on youtube don't represent billions of people... ^^ it's not offensive, it just doesn't make sense.

  • Honestly, it's true about the banjo

  • Sounds great. I know this is a difficult piece, especially without an Orchestra. But you two played it very good.

  • Another Asian... coincidence?

  • no apparently you only need 10,000 hours of practice to do anything to a professional degree.

  • Love it guys!

  • Absolutely fabulous!!!!! Keep up the good work!

  • wat is banjo???

  • are you serious about this question?

  • ya ^^

  • Ummm. I think you r wrong Bonnie because Piano concerto suggests it was composed on a piano. You may have seen a banjo version but the piano come first.

  • fantastic!!

  • I wouldnt say something like that without some argument bonnie. I think you are just another guy that wants to put people in error. Is it fun, or?...

  • Sorry i figured out too late. How can someone compose a Piano Concerto on a Banjo?: )

  • I hope you are kidding. If you aint, you better go check some history. Greig was Norwegian and there was no way he could have composed that concerto on a banjo at that time......so NO the concerto was not composed on a banjo...

  • @51698271 Um, this is not a joke. Maybe YOU should check on some history! Grieg DID compose this! And that is sorts mean, because of insulted the Norwegian people.

  • @bebebobo683 Did i ever say he didn't compose the piece? i said he didn't compose it on a damned banjo!

  • Dear, carO, cher @51698271 : .../...maybe, first, fOr the tambOurine & clavinOva O fOr the fidle & HOhner' melOdica...!?! Ma chi lO sà !?HuUu hunhun !i! ;-O)) ^V^încent-EnzO

  • Bacana D+

  • it was ok

  • hmm for me...very good work!

  • Beautiful concert

  • haha,

  • Shane - excellent interpretation and musicality. Don't listen to the idots who make absurd comments. Your accompanist is wonderful as well. Keep up the good work.

  • Thanks for uploading this! Does anybody know if there's a recording of the concerto with two pianos? I've found the sheet music but no recording. Thank you :)

  • try downloading this video with TubeTV and open the file with Quicktime. I haven't tried, but you might be able to save the file as an mp3. Good luck!

  • go suck a dick

  • HAHAHA who the fuck are you.

  • And what is wrong with the tempo he played it? I've heard this concerto a quite a few times, and this sounds fine to me.

  • only Leif Ove Andsnes from Norway can play Grieg!!!

  • and only that russian kid can play rachmaninoff and only that english chap can play elgar?

  • only that pole which can play Chopin, only that Frenchie can play Liszt.

  • liszt was hungarian

  • =), I remembered that 2 seconds during the time the comment was posting... you know the breif moment when it pends your comment? And I shook my head in fear that someone would notice.

  • it's all good! Liszt was great in any case. Im ATTEMPTING to learn his Hungarian Rhapsody no 2 at the moment actually. So hard!

  • dude, u cant play for shit so stfu

  • Really? Because I've heard a wonderful rendition of his Piano Sonata in E Minor from a guy I know that goes to Belmont.

  • you're being a bit of an ignorant totalitarian, aren't you?

  • Wow, Grieg has composed some great music. I have to admit, up to now I only knew Morning Mood, because it's used in advertisements a lot ;)

  • Forgive me, but this, imo, is best at the start of 'Walls Come Tumbling Down' by the Style Council.

  • Is it me or is this a touch slow?

  • I don't really get why tempo seems to always be such a big deal. For me, if this were any faster, with the nature of the recording, it would be very sloppy sounding indeed. Biggest thing is clarity. Sure, he could've been more exciting in places, but he was always quite clear, and true to the music.

  • Fair enough, everybody is open to their own interpretation fo the music, just for my taste there were parts that could have been faster. However, I dont think you sacrifice clarity with a slightly increased tempo, and if you do then that is a result of not being able to play it at that tempo, not the fault of increasing the tempo.

  • I like this arrangement, something different without the orchestra. Maybe your technique is not perfect, but you play with a lot of passion and feeling. I always prefer feeling to technique. It´s like beauty: sometimes the features of a person are not perfect, but the whole is very beautiful. You touched my soul.

    Congrats!

  • I have to disagree..

A fraction of a second off timing at a couple of places, but the drawn out pauses only adds to the dramatic impression, which I find to be the tone of the composer.

  • i played this for a duet it was kind of hard though

  • omg, i just got this got the music for this peice today. i have to learn it for a competition and you played it perfectly. it was a great help to listen to you and look at the music. thank you!

  • 5 stars, but the recording is a bit out of synch sometimes and a couple places Piano II is too dominant. beautiful solo . I can't imagine playing it that well. Maybe I should.

  • just one question... who was that coughing toward the end?

  • Comment removed

  • This piece is the most fun to play of all of the ones I've played. Grieg is a brilliant composer.

  • I put this one in my Favorites!

    5 stars!

    LIl' Robert

    (Natural Voice CounterTenor Vocalist)

  • This is fantastic!

    c.

  • I know! It takes a lot of talent just to be able to play this and much more to play ALL by memory! Notice...NO sheet music!

  • When you practice a piece of music enough this comes naturally, you can almost do it with your eyes closed!

  • Bravo!

  • hmm..sorry to say this..but,,i think maksim is better..

  • haha. i dont think its wrong to say who's better :D

  • totally agree. This is fucking normal.

  • Brilliant!

  • Nice performance!

Maybe it could be a little faster but it was clean throughout, which is pretty amazing already. :)

  • BOOM...HAVE A BANANA!

  • Lmao yeah love the cockney version

  • yerp

  • You, sir, have just won the internets

Those buggering classical composers stealing from cockney like that...

  • Indeed...cool name, btw! :P

  • Love the cockney thing!

  • Grieg is amazing and that preformance is brilliant!

  • I love the runs in this piece. They seem so hard but they flow really nicely under the fingers :D

This performance is awesome and absolutely flawless. He took some of the parts a bit slow, which is what gave me confidence: I'm playing this in six months time w/ Orchestra! ARGH

  • Can you tell me what the first arpeggio or arpeggio combination is at 0:48-0:50?

I love it, but i can't figure it out. It bugs me.

    Thank you.

    =)

  • You want to know how to play that opening arpeggio, right? It's kind of hard to describe without sheet music, but... It starts on the lowest note of the piano, an A played with the left hand, and then goes up one octave to the second-lowest A, jumping a fifth to E and then a fourth to the third-lowest A of the piano, after which the right hand finally joins in with the remaining notes in the Am chord going up in thirds and fourths, like this: C-E-A-C. Next...

  • ...the left hand plays the third lowest A and starts a pattern of four notes (A-C-E-A) that are alternated with the right hand (playing the C-E-A-E notes just above where the left hand left off, before switching back to the left hand playing the same thing an octave higher, answered by the right hand wherever the left hand finished. In other words, the combined left and right hand line has the following notes, always climbing: A-C-E-A-C-E-A-C, which are repeated twice in higher octaves. So...

  • The entire line goes like this: Lowest A on the piano, A one octave higher, (always climbing) E-A (right hand now-->) C-E-A-E, jumping down to the third lowest A of the piano and doing A-C-E-A-C-E-A-C-, jumping down to the fourth lowest A of the piano and doing A-C-E-A-C-E-A-C, jumping down to the fifth-lowest A of the piano and doing -A-C-E-A-C-E-A-C and stopping all dramatically. That last note should be the second-highest C of the piano. And everything is to be played rather quickly.

  • i wish i could play as good as them

  • i can play the much simpler version, it's only like the first minute or 2, it's on my chanel if u guys would please check it out, thanks..awesome vid btw

  • These guys are extrememly talented!! My Mom used to play this piece all the time, but I never knew what it was called. Very glad to have come across this, since Mom's not around to ask anymore!

  • I always get chills when listening to this. My Dad plays it a lot.

  • awesome...love the guy coughing at the end :)

  • Wonderful.

  • YES I've been wondering what the actual name of this piece is for a long time now; I have an arrangement of it entitled called "Norwegian Concerto," but it's not quite as epic as this version.

  • Very fine sensitive solo playing & well considered interpretation.Boomy sound lets u down a little,of course and, in my experience the piano2(orchestra)part always needs some re-writing to blend better,as in most concerto "accompaniments".Enjoyed it. Bravo!

  • this is amazinggg!! i hope that with a lot of practice, i can play just as good as you

  • This is amazing (it's not easy to play a concerto by memory, as the soloist seems to be doing). However, the full orchestral version sounds better to me. But the echoing in this video might be degrading the quality of the music.

  • so pathetically immature

  • karlschlaussen

To me this was an awesome performance of a favorite of mine.Been a Greig fan for 50 plus years. Still cant play a note let alone read one but I sure do appreciate all who can. Sure is an improvement on some of the stuff I hear on radio and TV.Just makes my day.

  • Almost Flawless!

  • does anyone know where i can get the sheet music for this?

  • sheetmusicfox,com

  • IMSLP

  • You're asleep?

  • International Music Score Library Project, just in case you weren't kidding. It's a wonderful site with many different scores and sheet music for download.

  • Wonderful! very talented!

  • great articulation and interpretation...i love this.. <3333333

  • Those two don't look the least like Morecambe & Wise...and has Andre Revin had a sex change?

  • WOW

i remember playing this piece, it was like hell for me, so nerve racking because it's like a duet in some sections

i idolize edvard grieg, he's form of music is completely ahead of his music period

  • that's really good...i'm learning this right now for an audition with my youth symphony and it's pretty fun. how old is this kid?

  • bravo!!!!

    great!!

    a fantastic interpretation!!

    (but... bad sound)

  • Awsome

  • Verrry cool. Very Bugs Bunny methinks.

  • O____O

My piano teacher was really excited, saying she wanted me to play this concerto....

this is my first time hearing it.

    I think I can.. I think I can... I think I can.....

  • I got the sheets. It's so damn hard to play =/

  • this is just what i needed...i just need to think and this is what let me think...beautful just amazing

  • damn about 11 minutes the sound is faster than picture and it's quite disturbing :o

  • so awsome Ive been looking everywhere 4 this but when i sang it 2 my dumb friends they had no idea wut i was talking about!
