Lately I have been feeling like Jesus in this scene. There are so many people and causes that need help, but how do you do it without becoming overwhelmed and losing yourself? There is so much to be done, but if a person becomes buried under the responsiblity no can be helped. I GUESS IT IS AN IMPORTANT LESSON. (that's saying a lot, since I am an atheist.)
Then they would be disappointed because He isn't God himself and therefore capable of magic (which isn't possible to begin with) and end up torturing and killing Him.... asking Him for something no human is capable of. What people should have done is ask Him for guidance in how they should live... or even better, watch how He acts and mimic His ways. He is our guide for how we should live our lives now, so should it have been back then.
guys, how about we judge christianity on whether you believe in the ideology, not whether you believe jesus christ existed or not. Its extremely unlikely that a movement that formed itself around a messianic person like Jesus made up that messiah.
@ivlfounder Yea, only it's dubious if Christ was ever existed, and there are some analogy with the figure of Jesus Christ and that of the greek pagan god Dyonisus. So this make to think...
I have a question too: You make films of JESUS and religion, and at the same time you turn a blind eye to all these evil people who insult the massgraves of children? And accuse ME for it???
The lepers singing make me think of a freak show, I don't know why. I kinda imagine a circus of freaks showing their deformities to the public while saying those lines.
This scene. This SCENE scared me so badly when I first saw it. It's still kind of what keeps me away from watching this musical again. I just like listening to the song, though. Truly chilling.
I've been visually impaired my whole life. Everyone from religious fanatics trying to "heal me" to guys with fetishes for disabilities have come up to me on the streets and through it all, I know that people like me are a part of God's image, too, it's just a different picture. Sure, there are "Why me?" moments, but you come to love who you are. In fact, when I die, I hope I DON'T get 20/20 vision because I feel I was granted an inner wisdom perfect eyesight could never replace.
@rollingmist You wonder why He went into certain regions to be 'alone' with His Father. Such need. We are all in need of God regardless of just illness and such. Very powerful scene.
When I was little this scene seemed to be pretty scary to me O.o Now I can see that they are normal people behind the costumes, but back then... geez, they looked like real lepers XD
Hahaha same, I remember watching this with my mum when I was 5 years old and being completely petrified of this scene. 15 years on makes a big difference haha.
@Smeliii I thought they were zombies in the first enactment I saw the 70's movie on video years ago. I never was born in the 70's so this was a bit new to me. Wow. Like wow.
I like this scene because you see the truth behind the glamour. It puts you in the position Jesus was in. Sick people would crowd you, cover you with their sickness. Can you honestly say you would be ok with sick, old, dying people touching you all over? And can you imagine how this would be in today's society? Someone who could heal any disease. A riot would start and everything would be a disaster.
I am a deeply religious Christian, but I am sorely tempted to dress up as one of these lepers and pay a visit to The Holy Land Experience during one of their reenactments. Then I'll throw back my hood and cloak, revealing my bandaged and bloody state and just burst into song when the Jesus cosplayer walks by. Who is with me?
After the Lone Wanderer starts Project Purity he begins to be worshipped as a God-like figure, one day walking through a small chasm a large group of Ghouls approaches him...
this isnt making him out to be bad! if YOU had read the bible, you would know that Jesus was sent down as A HUMAN REPRESENTATIVE! he was meant to make human mistakes, he had the body and 'temper' of a human.
he was divine and wonderful, but he was meant to make mistakes to prove that God understands us. Haven't you read Gethsemane? when he asked god to remove his suffering?Havent you read Jesus clearing out the temple? when he goes ballistic and violent? may God forgive you for misunderstanding!
@sherlockismyhomeboy well, though i disagree with your religion, i shall not judge, scold, or ridicule you. you are entitled to your beliefs just as i am entitled to mine.
@sherlockismyhomeboy don't worry about it. you are what you are. i'm not going to judge you . i will leave the judging to the higher power, which in my case is god
This grieves me considerably... Please repent all who watch this filth with enjoyment. It utterly blasphemous and historically inaccurate. Jesus is God man and he had no problems healing lepers. Read the eye witness accounts from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. May God forgive you!!!!
@mymindourdream i only want to say that if a Gos exists,or something similar to what we called God,i think a miracle he let us stay on this hearth again..sorry my pessimistic way to think....
So good. I can't believe there are people who consider this blasphemous. This movie is, for me, the most powerful of any film about Jesus. Love this song.
This is a fantastic musical. So many people haven't heard of it. It's a wonderful blend of Jesus' time and our time. It almost feel lighthearted, but it's the whole story. It seems like, if you didn't watch the whole thing, that it would be sacreligious. But when you watch the whole thing, it just tells the entire story, but with singing. Beautifully done. @siedlec Christianity is believing that for god everything is possible and that he made a perfect and imperfect being (out of himself, since he is the only perfection, and the bloodline of abraham) so that us imperfect beings by faith (belief against the understanding) could also become perfect yet also imperfect beings.
@siedlec I didn't think of that, sorry. In the bible, Jesus is more or less painted as perfect though- if healing people simply by touching them (however many there are), and performing miracles like feeding five thousand people with five loaves and two fish isn't perfect, I don't know what is.
Im impressed he stuck around for that long. If that was me, the second the lumps I thought were rocks stood up and started singing about their physical ailments, I would have fucking bolted.
@verkaforever I think it might have been improvisation from Neeley, I feel like the atmosphere of the land really changed the mood of the play into something more organic and meaningful
@tiemedown I see. I take it you've seen the play. I haven't- apart from a few videos from the 2000 version of the play on here- but I would like to, as I love Broadway musicals. Is the leper scene in a different setting in the play?
@verkaforever well for me, I got to see Carl and Ted together right before Carl died, so the last supper scene between them was absolutely devastating.
I love this musical, one of the bests. Though he was Christ, he wasn't there to cure everyone, he was there to preform miracles. One of my favorite scenes.

@verkaforever It was very interesting...however, without the landscape it really wasnt as powerful

@tiemedown I can imagine that. Out of interest, what was the highlight of the play for you?

@verkaforever well for me, I got to see Carl and Ted together right before Carl died, so the last supper scene between them was absolutely devastating.

@verkaforever make him sound like an asshole.
"Leave Me Alone" sounds more... wrenching.

I love this musical, one of the bests. Though he was Christ, he wasn't there to cure everyone, he was there to preform miracles. One of my favorite scenes.

@Cecetillo I always wondered how he got out of it too. Perhaps Mary rescued him, as she is with him in the next scene.
