Defender - What a classic title that is impossible to resist. I've just recently given Defender a try. I shied away from it when I was younger. My high on Defender "Red" is 138500.
Does anyone know the default difficulty for Defender "Red Label"?
Stargate. The feeling of accomplishment when you could capture all 10 humanoids and then get the bonus by going through the stargate was just huge!
If you can imagine this, the first Defender game I saw was in an unconventional cabinet. It was upright but the controls did NOT include a joystick! There were additional BUTTONS next to each other for 'up' and 'down'. Needless to say, at the age of 12 I never got very good at it.
Can you resist the urge of Defender? I think not. heh
This is one of those games that isn't quite the same unless you're using an actual cabinet because of the unique control scheme. But on MAME you can adjust the inputs. :)
@avenuePad but the buttons on your joystick are not in the same poisition as the arcade, like asteroids. You are limited to the controller you use (I got a X-Arcade which I love, but the buttons are fixed).
@BiffsGamingVideos Yeah, Defender has had some tries on portable systems and such, but no matter how good the ports are, they just can't replicate the arcade. It is a truly unique cabinet.
After a lot of work I brought one of these back to life about 10 years ago. Till this day it still kicks my ass. It's a never ending challenge that never gets boring.
I really didn't like it in the arcades either when I was a kid. I could play Moon Patrol for 30 minutes on one quarter or Defender for 30 seconds. Oddly MP was one of the first games I sold off from my collection due to the easiness.
I have to say I favor defender, the control scheme was hard as hell to figure out but still an addictive game for sure. I also prefer the Atari 5200 version to this as well.
I have a version of this for my Amstrad CPC 6128 - seriously addictive.

I remember how great it was when Defender 2000 came out for the Jaguar, as I could finally play the arcade version of Defender
