But hey, one mans meat is another man's poison, if you dig it , that's all that matters.Just don't feel sorry for me!
@gRUUVA wow. This is what I would call ecstasis, and the very best kind. I love it when folks like you express derogatory opinions that say much more about their own ignorance and lack of aesthetic refinement than what they're commenting on. First of all, one could argue that ALL art is self-indulgent, unless it's made by a computer. Further, this is phenomenal abstract, in-the-moment creative music-making that you're evidently incapable of grasping. I feel sorry for you!
It really pisses me off that a guy could play those ideas on piano or tenor sax and none one complains, but if we play intervals and arpeggios on a guitar people say "he has no soul". That guitar player has more in common with Joe Farrell or Woody Shaw than Stevie Ray Vaughan and that is probably a positive thing.
So people on here are complaining that it has no soul....O RLY? It's all in 4/4 and it was in the middle of a performance so you can't really judge a performance by just walking into the middle of it.
I think if we saw it from the beginning and how it built up it would make more sense but sadly the full clip isn't on here....SMH....

@brunostung Don't apologize - your dead right. this shit is actually tight as hell. to suggest that these guys are listening to each other is absurd. That's what they are about - that drummers is all over every lick the guitarist does - are they nuts or just deaf or both!!
Im a jazz lover and also a hardcore critic of things that suck. I thought this was cool. The guitar player sounded awesome, and im the last one to give complements (especially to other guitar players LOL). Does anyone listen to coltrane? Outside playing can be really cool, and by the way, the guitar player wasnt that outside! Check out some free jazz and see what you think. I think a lot of virgin ears have been commenting on this. It's a great jam and very tight. All around very nice.
This is nonsense. No listening to each other going on at all. Sounds like the guitar player is practicing running at the mouth. Sorry but this is non musical crap.
@MrMeddled Dude........you know where jazz came from? it started with black people, back when there wernt equal rights. back when it was considered "ok" to be racist, and it was wierd not to be. And you sound like a dumbass because you say " the truth is anyone can be good as long as the have allot of time on there hands"...WELL NO SHIT. thats how it is with ANYTHING. god will you fucking think before you time next time..please
@nicchiola same thing I was thinking.. the best guitar players know how to blend dissonance, tension, and resolution. It seems like he was constantly playing dissonant.. didnt like it.
well, i personally think this guy is an absolute genius. but i realize many people (judging from all of the negative comments) hate his playing. i see more and more arguments on this comment forum about his playing. the fact that he is causing such commotion in teh first place is an in indication that he is a musical artist of the first order and is a guitar player to be reckoned with.
@MrMeddled are you retarded? jazz is one of the greatest forms of music. and playing music for real takes more than time. if you knew anything about music you'd have never said that.
yeah he's obviously got chops and probably knows his stuff, but most of this isn't musical to me... just lot of patterns and sounds without much rhyme or reason involved. ask yourself this - if you were only listening and couldn't see him playing it, would you enjoy it as much?
Does not matter at all...whether you know theory or not, its easy to tell that this guy is using random notes and mostly chromatic moving patterns. There needs to be more of a balance or chromatics and melody...dont try and act like you know what you're talking about
The guy is using chromatics as a main transition tool. Learn to separate the chromatics from the key notes and you'll find plenty of good stuff amidst the dystopian lines. It makes it all the better.
The theory side and analysis of it should neither prove or disprove it's quality. It's music we're talking about, it's to be listened to first and foremost. The solo serves it's purpose well in that it's an intense improvisation...is it a classic solo for the ages?...no, but if I was there i would've dug it and walked away smiling.
wow dude... This guy is obviously good at what he does but if thats how you justify it then you're lost man... theory should be a means to an end, and if someone thinks the end doesn't sound good, than it don't matter how much they know
Didn't this dude get a full ride because Berklee wanted him to represent them in the Blue Note Group? That's got to be the most beautifully serendipitous event of any musician's life. I can't even begin to imagine what sort of validation that has to give a young, struggling musician.
Some of the stuff was really really cool, but there needs to be a combination of abstract jazzy stuff and more melodic phrasing that actually uses the correct notes of the key that he is playing in lol
for me this is just freakin noise. reminds me of myself before i started learning guitar :D n i don't care how sophisticated the techniques he used in the construction are. music should be pleasant to hear for anyone.
nust have the knopwledge to understand his solos. In the end is a matter of taste but it's no nonsense for sure!!! He can play a regular slow melodic solo and if he would let me i could post a small excpert from a rock solo which he wrote for the recording class. this is his direction and i know that it's one of the hardest styles to play....believe me...this atonal thing even if it seems meaningless at first it has a construction undeneath.....anyway my 2c
Guys, i met Bryan during our studies at LA Music Academy (before Berklee). Well, back then he was something like 14 yrs prodigy with amazing chops and he was practicing 24/7 even during meals etc!!! We used to practice together and i have to say that is one of the most talented guitarists ever...His progress was AMAZING and i saw him to trasformed from a rock guy to a jazz maniac...It's not curious that he received a full scholarship in both schools!!! His playing now it's for sure deep and one
HELL YEAH!!! Never heard of this guy! Starts off bop and ends up in Sonny Sharrock-land! YOU GO! Eff the haters on here who don't get it cuz it's not all "notes". Some folks just don't like their jazz RAW. I do.
obviously the guy can play so to say he sucks is just not right, but do you really enjoy listening to it over and over again like the guys who combine patterns, chops and feeling like Henderson, Holdsworth. Uncomparable in my opinion.
I agree with dasilva. The dude has some really creative runs going. Very clean work.
Personally, if there was anywhere he needed improvement, it would be his string bending technique.
Gotta wrap that thumb around the back for wild blues style overbends like he was working up to. Otherwise it gives you that crappy "san francisco vibrato" that was big in the 60's and only serves to irritate people.
while i respect all your opinions, i got to say that i feel you are wrong about this guy if you say his phrasing is weak or it just doesn't sound good. i personally feel this is some of the freshest, hippest, most bad-ass guitar playing i have ever heard. i think this dude is gonna be the next big thing. consider this: when coltrane first came onto the music scene, he was considered the anti-christ of jazz. now, he is a jazz legend! don't write this guy off just yet!!!
I saw him with Steps Ahead, the new band with Till Brönner on trumpet,(and the rest of the lineup is 1st rate of course), and until the first solo, I thought he was an ok player, than he really blew me away, he's got it all, the technique, the creativity, and he's his own voice.
Mike Mainieri never chose a bad musician, for Steps, and he can have anyone he wants!
damn good guitar player
check him out, cause we're gonna hear a lot from him!
Was checking this out again and it struck me that a lot of what Baker's doing is very reminiscent of Larks' Tongues in Aspic/Starless and Bible Black/Red era Robert Fripp.
first, you should know that this video was recorded in the fall of 2005 (i think), when bryan was 19. that was almost four years ago. maybe you guys should check out what he is doing now? from what he told me, he has never considered himself a "jazz" guitarist. he doesnt even listen to jazz. he listens to indie rock and pop. he considers himself a songwriter and singer and his main focus is his band. if he plays jazz he looks at it as a way for him to just freak out for fun.
bryan blew fuze out of the water at this show, which isn't an easy thing to do cause fuze is great (although I have found that he plays the same licks every time he plays, and his phrasing is a little weak, but i guess only the greats don't resort to licks all the time). Anyways, one of the best shows at berklee hands down while i was there. The way meshell played was the closest to jaco in terms of feel and groove.marcus miller, wooten and all the tech guys should stop dicking around and dig it.
haha i leant this dude a guitar for a bit when we were both in our freshman year at berklee... hes probably the most amazing technician ive ever seen on a guitar, and for everyone yammering on about straighter ahead jazz, he played a semi hollow when he first came into berklee and was immediately the most sought after musician of any instrument in the school for teachers and students to get next to, people used to just sit outside his practice room (where he spent almost all his time).
wheres the MUSIC in all this? just sounds like noddles...living in boston, where berkleee is; all people like are anything jammy widdling self masturbatory 11 minute diarrhea filled spasms.
This guy was the talk of Berklee when I was there... can't stand his playing though.... where's the feeling??? There more to music than just how many notes you can fit in a measure.
Bryan Baker is one of the most creative, groovin', tasteful and talented guitar players I've heard, absolutely WICKED!!!

Bassist dude? The bassist is Meshell Ndegeocello, does Meshell sound like a man's name to you?

I agree with dasilva. The dude has some really creative runs going. Very clean work.
Personally, if there was anywhere he needed improvement, it would be his string bending technique.
Gotta wrap that thumb around the back for wild blues style overbends like he was working up to. Otherwise it gives you that crappy "san francisco vibrato" that was big in the 60's and only serves to irritate people.
Still, five stars. Excellent.

while i respect all your opinions, i got to say that i feel you are wrong about this guy if you say his phrasing is weak or it just doesn't sound good. i personally feel this is some of the freshest, hippest, most bad-ass guitar playing i have ever heard. i think this dude is gonna be the next big thing. consider this: when coltrane first came onto the music scene, he was considered the anti-christ of jazz. now, he is a jazz legend! don't write this guy off just yet!!!

could'nt agree more, this guy is unique.
I saw him with Steps Ahead, the new band with Till Brönner on trumpet,(and the rest of the lineup is 1st rate of course), and until the first solo, I thought he was an ok player, than he really blew me away, he's got it all, the technique, the creativity, and he's his own voice.
Mike Mainieri never chose a bad musician, for Steps, and he can have anyone he wants!
damn good guitar player
check him out, cause we're gonna hear a lot from him!

love Meshell on bass - not so keen on this guitar player. Just another one.

Was checking this out again and it struck me that a lot of what Baker's doing is very reminiscent of Larks' Tongues in Aspic/Starless and Bible Black/Red era Robert Fripp.

first, you should know that this video was recorded in the fall of 2005 (i think), when bryan was 19. that was almost four years ago. maybe you guys should check out what he is doing now? from what he told me, he has never considered himself a "jazz" guitarist. he doesnt even listen to jazz. he listens to indie rock and pop. he considers himself a songwriter and singer and his main focus is his band. if he plays jazz he looks at it as a way for him to just freak out for fun.
grassniak 3 years ago
bryan blew fuze out of the water at this show, which isn't an easy thing to do cause fuze is great (although I have found that he plays the same licks every time he plays, and his phrasing is a little weak, but i guess only the greats don't resort to licks all the time). Anyways, one of the best shows at berklee hands down while i was there. The way meshell played was the closest to jaco in terms of feel and groove.marcus miller, wooten and all the tech guys should stop dicking around and dig it.

Holy fusion!!! Pretty awesome solo! his tone could be thicker so it'd complement his lines more, and not point out mistakes as much.

haha i leant this dude a guitar for a bit when we were both in our freshman year at berklee... hes probably the most amazing technician ive ever seen on a guitar, and for everyone yammering on about straighter ahead jazz, he played a semi hollow when he first came into berklee and was immediately the most sought after musician of any instrument in the school for teachers and students to get next to, people used to just sit outside his practice room (where he spent almost all his time).

He's a good player, but has one of the worst techniques I've ever seen in my life.
