  • Bryan Baker is one of the most creative, groovin', tasteful and talented guitar players I've heard, absolutely WICKED!!!

  • I know all you haters out there. You've been around forever dissing Bird, Ornette, Train, Monk, Liebman ,anyone who pushes the boundries, throughout the ages you've been there. Realize you are that person This guy hears every note he plays, the time comment is absurd, ahead of the 1/8 note, on top of the 1/8 note, behind? you've got to break away from your metronome and let it flow. I hear quartal, intervallic, chromatic and committed. Stay on the merry go round, He's ripping the roller coaster

  • @dinarick1 I want to give you 100 thumbs up but I can't :(

  • This guy is a shredder he can play't play in time... and his ideas don't follow. just listen to him you can't seriously think he is anywhere near as good as Monder, Rogers, Krantz....

  • @yoshy321 Seriously mate, take up knitting, music is too big for you; everything you say here shows that you have no idea what you are talking about!

  • Sounds like Adam Rogers :)

  • wheres the full recording for this, this video is so sick

  • i checked this dude out in more depth recently, and i'm pretty sure he was like 18 or 19 when this was filmed.... he's like 25 or something now... he's doing some pretty sick shit nowadays... check out his website.... id' post it here, but youtube is lame... he also wrote a very cool book that delves into his musical ideas etc... check out what he's doing now...

  • Another one who does nothing but practice his outside and symetrical patterns all day, meanwhile, completely oblivious to his thin, crappy tone!

  • @123IN321OUT Another one who thinks he knows what he's talking about.

  • lol, bass guitar lady looks like a crack whore, though shes jammin wit da bass

  • This is the most retarded crap I've ever heard

  • @xXJONxGUINXx you are an ignorant loser!

  • "Sef indulgent, meaningless,pretentious garbage"

    Well said and spot on.

  • @scruno50 You too buddy, if you want to have an opinion, get an education first :)

  • It was golden up until the 56th second.

  • Bryan Baker kodel jis Karuna ant maikes uzsidejo ,jam reikejo ant galvos 5metru aukscio uzsideti, kad visi matytu:)))

    Siaip gitaristai P.Metheny,A.Holsword,J.Scofield,

  • wooww that's great music.

  • This is true genius!!!!

You neeed to consider John, Mike & Pat and especially the Brit John McLaughlin

  • A fair fusion guitar picker and no mistake. Could live without the 'dad jeans' and the gurning, though!

  • Oh dear dear, have I hit a raw nerve? I think in your heart of hearts you know this is one big turd! You can polish and dress it up as much as you like, call it what you will, but it still is and always will be a big steaming turd! But hey, one mans meat is another man's poison, if you dig it , that's all that matters.Just don't feel sorry for me!

  • what a piceof shti.

  • Sef indulgent, meaningless, pretentious garbage, sorry but it really is.

  • @gRUUVA wow. This is what I would call ecstasis, and the very best kind. I love it when folks like you express derogatory opinions that say much more about their own ignorance and lack of aesthetic refinement than what they're commenting on. First of all, one could argue that ALL art is self-indulgent, unless it's made by a computer. Further, this is phenomenal abstract, in-the-moment creative music-making that you're evidently incapable of grasping. I feel sorry for you!

  • Sef indulgent meaningless garbage, sorry but it really is.

  • Can't whistle this one on the way to work!

  • @gRUUVA you must be a pretty terrible whistler then

  • stop..moving...your fucking mouth, you dont need to.

  • Just the kind of cat Miles would have scooped up!

  • It really pisses me off that a guy could play those ideas on piano or tenor sax and none one complains, but if we play intervals and arpeggios on a guitar people say "he has no soul". That guitar player has more in common with Joe Farrell or Woody Shaw than Stevie Ray Vaughan and that is probably a positive thing.

  • So people on here are complaining that it has no soul....O RLY? It's all in 4/4 and it was in the middle of a performance so you can't really judge a performance by just walking into the middle of it.

I think if we saw it from the beginning and how it built up it would make more sense but sadly the full clip isn't on here....SMH....

  • pretty far out.... hes been playing far to much tho you can tell

  • so skilled...but that sounded DISGUSTING

  • well this was something different from wat i expected, not saying it sucked or anything, cuz it didnt..but well everyone has their own style i guess, this just isnt something id pay to go see, thats for sure..but again to each his own..

  • What the hell... I thought this was a joke and the title was sarcastic....

I still think the title is sarcastic.

  • Great musicians but to much egotrippin and all over the place, very tech no soul! I'm no virginears my dears!

  • @famboiten you think there is no soul in creating these lines?... things can be technical and have soul at the same time.

  • I know jazz is supposed to sound like that but dear god that was a terrible guitar performance.

  • this reminds me of frank gambale only this guys got killer tone

  • who gave ET the bass guitar

  • @mrpunisher123451 holy crap

    ET with a bass guitar

    youre right

  • @mrpunisher123451 haha dude your comment nearly make me cry , if you had said yoda i would be crying

  • @mrpunisher123451 HAHAHA

  • Regarding the person who said that they aren't listening to eachother.... LOL they just hearing it differently than you. Some would say they are at a higher level but I won't say that. This person obviously can't event hear them! I'm sorry to be a jerk but it's true. Or maybe this person just hasn't listened to the right stuff yet. Just start listening to some more free stuff, it is hard to hear at first but after you get it it really is awesome, and the limits never stop.

  • @brunostung Don't apologize - your dead right. this shit is actually tight as hell. to suggest that these guys are listening to each other is absurd. That's what they are about - that drummers is all over every lick the guitarist does - are they nuts or just deaf or both!!

  • Im a jazz lover and also a hardcore critic of things that suck. I thought this was cool. The guitar player sounded awesome, and im the last one to give complements (especially to other guitar players LOL). Does anyone listen to coltrane? Outside playing can be really cool, and by the way, the guitar player wasnt that outside! Check out some free jazz and see what you think. I think a lot of virgin ears have been commenting on this. It's a great jam and very tight. All around very nice.

  • I'm likin the bass very much

    guitar not so much

  • adam rogers

  • @bluesguy33

    clowns this guy

  • @onesandtensonly he reminds me a lot of him is what I meant

  • Isn't that guitar a tad big for her?

  • This is nonsense. No listening to each other going on at all. Sounds like the guitar player is practicing running at the mouth. Sorry but this is non musical crap.

  • Awesome...!!!

    But Look that funny face....

    Hahaha...

  • Now this is just me speaking here....Im just one voice..Its a shame that music that uses the most talent is not the most popular.....

  • This is awesome. The phrasing reminds me of how a horn would play.

  • @MrMeddled Dude........you know where jazz came from? it started with black people, back when there wernt equal rights. back when it was considered "ok" to be racist, and it was wierd not to be. And you sound like a dumbass because you say " the truth is anyone can be good as long as the have allot of time on there hands"...WELL NO SHIT. thats how it is with ANYTHING. god will you fucking think before you time next time..please

  • He's very good, but does they have to always play "out"? I mean, tension needs resolution every now and then. Jeez, give me some melody!!!

  • @nicchiola same thing I was thinking.. the best guitar players know how to blend dissonance, tension, and resolution. It seems like he was constantly playing dissonant.. didnt like it.

  • well, i personally think this guy is an absolute genius. but i realize many people (judging from all of the negative comments) hate his playing. i see more and more arguments on this comment forum about his playing. the fact that he is causing such commotion in teh first place is an in indication that he is a musical artist of the first order and is a guitar player to be reckoned with.

  • @MrMeddled are you retarded? jazz is one of the greatest forms of music. and playing music for real takes more than time. if you knew anything about music you'd have never said that.

  • JAZZ!

  • bassists name is meshell n'degeocello.

  • i wanna punch the little man on bass.

  • Awesome musicians. I love the guitarist's approach to improvisations.

  • Anyone know the bassist name?

  • Looks like his energy drink wore off briefly at 0:39.

  • lol i went and looked at what he did

  • That trombone playing blew my mind.

  • lovin the faces XD

  • space is an important part of improvisation

  • Musicians give a lot of lip service to space but most of them don't play that way.

  • Comment removed

  • all of you on myspace look up leah mason she is very very good i know her and she has just been signed by universal so please look her up.

  • I like how the guitarist is a seemingly normal white guy and the bassist is like eskimo just-walked-in-off-the-stree-t black lady.

    Craziness, just like this music!

  • so much soul!!!!!! ..........ha

  • berklee has a distinctive sound

  • wtf is this

  • a video

  • GREATTTT!!!!!! This guy is way out there.

  • if you guys are tripping over like, weird-sounding chordal stuff and weird 'random' chromatic stuff.. listen to some Mars Volta.

  • nah they suck listen to some good jazz instead

  • Comment removed

  • muito bom !!!

  • yeah he's obviously got chops and probably knows his stuff, but most of this isn't musical to me... just lot of patterns and sounds without much rhyme or reason involved. ask yourself this - if you were only listening and couldn't see him playing it, would you enjoy it as much?

  • I guarantee that everyone calling this shit doesn't have even the slightest clue as to what music theory is

  • Does not matter at all...whether you know theory or not, its easy to tell that this guy is using random notes and mostly chromatic moving patterns. There needs to be more of a balance or chromatics and melody...dont try and act like you know what you're talking about

  • The guy is using chromatics as a main transition tool. Learn to separate the chromatics from the key notes and you'll find plenty of good stuff amidst the dystopian lines. It makes it all the better.

  • The theory side and analysis of it should neither prove or disprove it's quality. It's music we're talking about, it's to be listened to first and foremost. The solo serves it's purpose well in that it's an intense improvisation...is it a classic solo for the ages?...no, but if I was there i would've dug it and walked away smiling.

  • Comment removed

  • wow dude... This guy is obviously good at what he does but if thats how you justify it then you're lost man... theory should be a means to an end, and if someone thinks the end doesn't sound good, than it don't matter how much they know

  • If someone doesn't think something sounds "good," then that's a bias on their part.

  • Know the boundaries

  • @viddelt - FUCK the boundaries!!!!!!

  • this sounds like stomp played backwards utter sheeeeiiiiite

  • Omaigosh, notes that aren't from a pentatonic scale, this is obviously rubbish!

This is improvisation at its purest, some of his ideas don't carry for me but this is some undeniably creative playing.

  • Agree with the first sentence, disagree with the second

  • great playing, but i don't like his guitarsound

  • hummm, his lines are kinda non-sense... but theres something to it... cant hate it.

  • WHEW! 5 stars!!!

  • this is acid jazz you fool, its supposed to sound like this...

  • Didn't this dude get a full ride because Berklee wanted him to represent them in the Blue Note Group? That's got to be the most beautifully serendipitous event of any musician's life. I can't even begin to imagine what sort of validation that has to give a young, struggling musician.

  • Love it....

  • Jesus he know how to play out

  • i need a protractor, slide rule, calculus and quantum physics studies to listen to this.

    to each his own, whatever....

  • @mictamper then you must have really immature ears. to each his own, whatever.

  • weird but i like it

  • Some of the stuff was really really cool, but there needs to be a combination of abstract jazzy stuff and more melodic phrasing that actually uses the correct notes of the key that he is playing in lol

This was just over the top

  • agreed. it looks and sounds to me he just has patterns memorized that he moves up and down chromatically.

  • that was insane. five stars!!!!

  • ... guess you had to be there?

  • Great..now play something I can whistle to..

  • god this is awful. narcisistic wank-off session

  • Can someone teach me how to appreciate this?

  • Awesome! I love this.

  • great

  • again!! worst solo i've ever heard

  • whaaaat?

    why? its crazy good.

  • for me this is just freakin noise. reminds me of myself before i started learning guitar :D n i don't care how sophisticated the techniques he used in the construction are. music should be pleasant to hear for anyone.

  • Hey, that's the guy that's playing with Christian Scott right now. He's cooled down a lot since this.

  • Yeah I saw him a couple of weeks ago with Christian and he might have cooled down but the intensity is still there!

  • I meant cooled down in the sense he's not playing more than he has to.

  • Aah in that case, I'm right there with you

  • nust have the knopwledge to understand his solos. In the end is a matter of taste but it's no nonsense for sure!!! He can play a regular slow melodic solo and if he would let me i could post a small excpert from a rock solo which he wrote for the recording class. this is his direction and i know that it's one of the hardest styles to play....believe me...this atonal thing even if it seems meaningless at first it has a construction undeneath.....anyway my 2c

  • Guys, i met Bryan during our studies at LA Music Academy (before Berklee). Well, back then he was something like 14 yrs prodigy with amazing chops and he was practicing 24/7 even during meals etc!!! We used to practice together and i have to say that is one of the most talented guitarists ever...His progress was AMAZING and i saw him to trasformed from a rock guy to a jazz maniac...It's not curious that he received a full scholarship in both schools!!! His playing now it's for sure deep and one

  • this guy sure loves steve topping !

  • HELL YEAH!!! Never heard of this guy! Starts off bop and ends up in Sonny Sharrock-land! YOU GO! Eff the haters on here who don't get it cuz it's not all "notes". Some folks just don't like their jazz RAW. I do.

  • Was this song in Gran Turismo 2 soundtrack? It looks like so.

  • hmmm i dont think so, but it could have been !

  • obviously the guy can play so to say he sucks is just not right, but do you really enjoy listening to it over and over again like the guys who combine patterns, chops and feeling like Henderson, Holdsworth. Uncomparable in my opinion.

  • sounds like a guy trying to do improv but sucks...

  • horrible fucking noise!!

  • ahahahahaha.... this bassist dude is funny...

    and guitarist sucks

  • Bassist dude? The bassist is Meshell Ndegeocello, does Meshell sound like a man's name to you?

  • than it's a one funny "female"...

  • I agree with dasilva. The dude has some really creative runs going. Very clean work.

Personally, if there was anywhere he needed improvement, it would be his string bending technique.

Gotta wrap that thumb around the back for wild blues style overbends like he was working up to. Otherwise it gives you that crappy "san francisco vibrato" that was big in the 60's and only serves to irritate people.

    Still, five stars. Excellent.

  • while i respect all your opinions, i got to say that i feel you are wrong about this guy if you say his phrasing is weak or it just doesn't sound good. i personally feel this is some of the freshest, hippest, most bad-ass guitar playing i have ever heard. i think this dude is gonna be the next big thing. consider this: when coltrane first came onto the music scene, he was considered the anti-christ of jazz. now, he is a jazz legend! don't write this guy off just yet!!!

  • could'nt agree more, this guy is unique.

I saw him with Steps Ahead, the new band with Till Brönner on trumpet,(and the rest of the lineup is 1st rate of course), and until the first solo, I thought he was an ok player, than he really blew me away, he's got it all, the technique, the creativity, and he's his own voice.

Mike Mainieri never chose a bad musician, for Steps, and he can have anyone he wants!

    damn good guitar player

check him out, cause we're gonna hear a lot from him!

  • love Meshell on bass - not so keen on this guitar player. Just another one.

  • Was checking this out again and it struck me that a lot of what Baker's doing is very reminiscent of Larks' Tongues in Aspic/Starless and Bible Black/Red era Robert Fripp.

  • first, you should know that this video was recorded in the fall of 2005 (i think), when bryan was 19. that was almost four years ago. maybe you guys should check out what he is doing now? from what he told me, he has never considered himself a "jazz" guitarist. he doesnt even listen to jazz. he listens to indie rock and pop. he considers himself a songwriter and singer and his main focus is his band. if he plays jazz he looks at it as a way for him to just freak out for fun.

  • bryan blew fuze out of the water at this show, which isn't an easy thing to do cause fuze is great (although I have found that he plays the same licks every time he plays, and his phrasing is a little weak, but i guess only the greats don't resort to licks all the time). Anyways, one of the best shows at berklee hands down while i was there. The way meshell played was the closest to jaco in terms of feel and groove.marcus miller, wooten and all the tech guys should stop dicking around and dig it.

  • stupid

  • what the hell. forget the theory and whether or not he's playing in key or which scales or modes he's using or whateverrrr. this sounds like shit!

  • not feelin it

  • Holy fusion!!! Pretty awesome solo! his tone could be thicker so it'd complement his lines more, and not point out mistakes as much.

  • He plays like Eric Dolphy on saxophone, awesome at all

  • lol this is awesome

  • haha i leant this dude a guitar for a bit when we were both in our freshman year at berklee... hes probably the most amazing technician ive ever seen on a guitar, and for everyone yammering on about straighter ahead jazz, he played a semi hollow when he first came into berklee and was immediately the most sought after musician of any instrument in the school for teachers and students to get next to, people used to just sit outside his practice room (where he spent almost all his time).

  • what a mouth!!!!!

  • chewing gum?

  • He has a big head, like Frankenstein.

  • a lot of whole tone and chromatic, this is a product of using universal keys, im not much into this kind, i like jazz but this is like jazz on crack.

  • ACTUALLY ON CRYSTAL METH :D

  • wheres the MUSIC in all this? just sounds like noddles...living in boston, where berkleee is; all people like are anything jammy widdling self masturbatory 11 minute diarrhea filled spasms.

  • you feel that way, but i like it. funny that

  • This guy was the talk of Berklee when I was there... can't stand his playing though.... where's the feeling??? There more to music than just how many notes you can fit in a measure.

  • LOLZ its the bass midget!

  • What the f... Lame

  • agreed

  • LEts see you do it

  • this guy's amazing

  • im not saying anything bad bout his playing or him but look at him speak with guitar its very comic

  • he feels the music... that's a good thing... you wanna laugh really hard... watch steve vai then... =]

  • the guitar is bigger than him

  • he has hilarious mouth movements

  • i like this kind of music but are they just playing random notes

  • No they don´t...

  • you have no idea

  • No, they aren't

  • I think Bill Nace is a better guitarist

  • neat playin dude!

  • Check out his album "Aphotic".

    It is fucking magnific.

  • Bryan Baker is SICK guitarist. Too bad he sold out on his solo material.
