I have to say that I really dislike all of your videos but you are 100 right on this one. NO President should be able to alter what Congress puts on his desk Either a Bill needs to be signed or vetoed.
House Democrats issued a warning to President Obama on Tuesday: Cool it with the signing statements. In addition, If Obama intends to Preserve, Protect and Defend the Constitution of the United States he must do all in his power to see that the torture team is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
There is a Bill that would require all law to line up with the Constitution.
We need to put a stop to signing statements and other abusive government like the FED and Stimulus spending packages that just aren't part of our Constitution
I am trying to remember where I read that...You might check with Representitive Ron Paul's office He is a Republican or Alan Grayson a Democrat...both support the Constitution and should be able to give you more than my brain can offer :)
Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel: "pick up your shovel, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the promised land".
- Nearly 75 years ago , Roosevelt said: "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a camel, this is the promised land".
- Now Obama is going to steal your shovel, kick your asses, raise the price of camels, and mortgage the promised land.
You know, Jesus wouldn't tax the rich either. Jesus would keep guantanamo open for torturing thy enemy; Jesus would be a republican. Obama isn't stealing any property, isn't "kicking your asses" (he stopped the torture) and has no control over the prices of goods. As for the promised land, we ain't hebrews, why do we care? If America is the promised land, why did we have to violently steal it from the natives? Why are there thousands of people living in poverty? Where's THEIR milk and honey?

37 Czars so far! they have huge power and are completely unchecked . I think this is where we need to be looking for the nexxt scandalous abuse of the taxpayer. Obama controls them , but is not going to take the heaT for their unconstitutional acts, even though he dictated them .
Look I am running around screaming and waving the flag because I see the lies this man is telling ,,,I am an expert in observation and Obama takes it to another level. He says things that he believes are absurd. He constantly looks down and says uuum. Thats a sign of a lie. He should be looking up if he were truthful but he is never truthful theres way more evidence but not enough room here, he exibits the behavior of a compulsive liar. we are all in danger of losing our freedom
Comparison to line item veto is a good one. Some governors have line item veto, and I think the president should, too. At least then the legislature would have the opportunity to override it. But with signing statements, there is no chance for override. That's why it makes me uncomfortable. Line item veto should be more constitutional than signing statements.
Signing statements are nothing new. Clinton had them too, and I'm sure many presidents going back had them (though I don't know exactly when they started).
The problem with Bush was that he ABUSED them. I don't like them in the first place, but there's a difference between adding a statement to a few bills here and there to say, "Yeah, I'm just going to ignore this little bit," and using them routinely to basically negate the existence of Congress outright.
Obama's still trying to walk the middle line but ultimately it's a lost cause. The republicans are redundant now. He should stop placating them and simply do what needs to be done, veto crap bills and move forward on his promises.
When you try and please everybody you ultimately wind up just pissing them off.
@Capng123 Seriously, republicans be trippin no matter what obama does, he needs to use his time fixing the country rather then negotiating with lunatics.

Good analysis by Cenk on this one. If Barack had a problem with this or any other bill, he needs to address it with the relevant congress critters, or else veto it. Adding a BS signing statement to it, outlining his "interpretation" of it, and effectively limiting its scope is just wrong. No truly free democracy should have anything to do with signing statements.
This is very dangerous. It is a beginning of a power corruption and dictatorship. Don't get me wrong! as I Cank said, Obama probably is not a dictator, but in future this kind of acting unbalanced with the bills is going to be very dangerous.
soon we on the left are going to be saying obama is like bush simply because he is the president.....enough already !...."he wore a red tie...OMG he looks like bush ! "

I kind of agree but I think the point is if Obama starts using his powers as the president in the same way as Bush then it moves us further a way from holding Bush accountable and more in the direction of Bush did nothing wrong and the way he used his power is ok for future presidents. It's hard because you kind of want Obama to used those powers because he might actually fix things, but you don't want that precedent set in case the country loses it's mind again and elects another Bush.

I have to agree this is a very, very troubling sign. I'm hopeful Obama will curtail his desire to do this ever again, or I would think his supporters need to jump all over him like that 71-year-old jumped on that robber, and KNOCK HIM THE FUCK OUT.
I'm of two minds on this issue. The part of the bill that Obama issued the signing statement on is unconstitutional. And the correct way to have a law declared unconstitutional is to break that law, get called on it, and take it to the Supreme Court who will then decide on the constitutionality of it. So, in that way, Obama's doing the right thing.
However, it have been more reasonable to just ignore it and dare Congress to come after him? No need to bring signing statements into this.
Palin and Sanord are on the same oxycotin train as Rush Limbaugh. Maybe it's something in the water at the pac meetings. Believe me every day I thank God this joke(Palin) and the old man didn't make it. We would be doing hard labor in China if they had. The only part of Palin I want to see is her ass fadeing into the Alaskan sunset!
so obama complained about them trying to tell him what to do on foreign policy ?...that's it ?.....given the mentality of john mccain , lieberman and all the other neo-cons i don't really have a problem with this....the precedent might not be all rosey but it's not like he pulled a bush.....he has on other things but this is just nit picking....people on both sides have become obsessed with EVERYTHING obama does...but when bush was president people seemed not to notice half the shit he did
This is why we SORELY need Sarah Palin President RIGHT NOW for she will not make any mistakes like that. She will veto every single liberal bill and ensure they do not get passed at all. She will on the other hand put all foreign leaders and governments in their place, especially China, North Korea and Iran. If they don't behave and try to undermine President Palin, she will UNLEASH the WRATH OF GOD HERSELF onto them and REVEAL their PUSSIES for the whole world to see and destroy their cred!
Are you INSANE!?! You honestly think Palin is anything but a megalomaniac fascist? We've lost enough rights as it is, Palin will take more! And guess what, two of the countries you listed are all grown up now, and need to be treated that way. Why don't you start looking at people with dissenting opinions as adults, rather than as faceless children. Don't vote church, god boy, vote politics!
Remember when she said that she would ban some books. I wonder what her next step might have been. Hmm maybe publicly burn them too. She is a nazi, very incompetent nazi
That was what made me first hate her guts. The "real america" crap just iced the cake. I'm practically building my own library, and she's banning books? Fuck her.
@ecwauxtremestoopid: Yeah, this strategy worked real well for the US when Bush employed it, didn't it!
Either you're being ironic or you're a complete moron who hasn't paid attention to the damage Bush did. The entire world destested Bush's policies for good reasons and the US had to pay a price. Obama and future generations have to clean up Bush's mess now.
And she will successfully shoot down a helicopter in the Alaskan wilderness! Achmedinejad, Ayatollah, Kim Jong Il, Putin, Medeyev, Hu Jingtao, Wen Jiabao and every single freedom hating dictator around the world!
cenk relax. i agree with his statement. Congress makes laws. The president does foreign policy. thats what he had to remind them of. If you give them one inch they will take a mile. plus who taught constitution law? Oh wait Obama
Cenk. Are you serious? Bush had more signing statements then all other presidents combined. It's a right of the Chief Exec. Office to use the signing statement power and Bush clearly abused it. Comparing the 2 is not at all equivalent. it's like say that everyone that's ever smoked pot is a pothead.
I think people need to calm down for a minute on this one, even Cenk. As said, everyone agrees with the bill except for that part,, so does Obama. Plus as stated by Haywoco2, its more of an acknowlegement that the US Constitution supercedes the language of the bill. Its not Obama going for more power outside of what was given to him by the constitution, but Obama preventing congress from taking power from him granted by the constitution. So if anything, he IS defending the Constitution.
Yeah I know what you mean on both sides there are unfair expectations to him, he's not going to make money fall from the sky but at the same time he is not going to frigging bankrupt America. Both sides should just leave him alone and let him do his duty.
right another brilliant arguement. No it is not going to fall from the sky so he should give away more money that america does not have to help the lobbyists he said were not going to be a part of his administration? right another obama lie. Bush and obama work for the same ppl open your eyes to the truth the presidency is a joke and so have most of the presidents in the last 100 years
Well no President is perfect ever. I think Obama has good intentions but I remember in the beginning when he was the President-Elect some naive supporters seriously thought he would fix the economy in no time. Apparently that's false but I don't believe he is going to ruin us, he's trying let's just all leave him alone and let him attempt to save the economy.
i really dont want to waste my time trying to explain how this works.the economy is in big trouble and obamas direction is making it way worse adding more money and credit is like trying to put out a fire with gas a peter schiff would say.not going to work. you need to subscribe to the peter schiff channel and also alex jones both here on youtube.
Whatever we'll wait and see, he's got the rest of his term in which it will hopefully work. I don't really care what you think, I'm going to see how things turn out, anyway we have no control over what happens. So let's all wait and see that's what I say.
well thats ok it does not much matter if you care what I think while you are waiting and seeing others will be preparing for whats to come instead of following the sheep off the cliff like yourself. I am also pretty sure that your country was founded on the principles that the power was in the ppl hense the const. but keep on giving up your rights....and good luck
bigger fish to fry then the way a bill was signed... to me it wasn't news even when Bush did it. wars, healtchare, economy, etc. let this busy man have a break
I think Obama should've vetoed the bill. Sure, it's hell to go tell congress "it's fine but take this part out", but it's better than stargint on the road of hipoccrissy and abuse of power that the Republicans are in. Sure, his position in signing statement was (I think) overall right, but the actual use of a signing statement is wrong.
Cenk, I don't believe it's an interpretation of the bill so much as an acknowledgement that the U.S. Constitution automatically supercedes the wrongful language in the bill.
I thought Obama took an oath to defend the constitution. His supporters should take him up on it if they don't want him to go down the same road as the last president.
I feel disgusted when presidents shit on the constitution with their actions and at the same time act as if they are the champion of the people.
I agree with Cenk, and Obama is treading into dangerous territory. Especially coming from someone who has taught and practice law at the heightest level. There is a reason why we have 3 distinct branches of government that check one another and the legislative branch has consistently, whether Rep or Dem gets a F for not doing it's job.
I understand the worry but Vetoing and then waiting for a more amenable bill to be crafted might just be too long a process? Not that expediency should be the be all and end all... I don't know.

This is why we SORELY need Sarah Palin President RIGHT NOW for she will not make any mistakes like that. She will veto every single liberal bill and ensure they do not get passed at all. She will on the other hand put all foreign leaders and governments in their place, especially China, North Korea and Iran. If they don't behave and try to undermine President Palin, she will UNLEASH the WRATH OF GOD HERSELF onto them and REVEAL their PUSSIES for the whole world to see and destroy their cred!
ecwaufisxtreme 2 years ago

Obama and future generations have to clean up Bush's mess now.

cenk relax. i agree with his statement. Congress makes laws. The president does foreign policy. thats what he had to remind them of. If you give them one inch they will take a mile. plus who taught constitution law? Oh wait Obama
trini864 2 years ago
Cenk. Are you serious? Bush had more signing statements then all other presidents combined. It's a right of the Chief Exec. Office to use the signing statement power and Bush clearly abused it. Comparing the 2 is not at all equivalent. it's like say that everyone that's ever smoked pot is a pothead.

Obama has lied about everything and he doing everything that Bush has done--he's no better. Don't censor me.
4000MILESdown 2 years ago
I think people need to calm down for a minute on this one, even Cenk. As said, everyone agrees with the bill except for that part,, so does Obama. Plus as stated by Haywoco2, its more of an acknowlegement that the US Constitution supercedes the language of the bill. Its not Obama going for more power outside of what was given to him by the constitution, but Obama preventing congress from taking power from him granted by the constitution. So if anything, he IS defending the Constitution.

Again cenk this is what i am saying obama is a liar no better than bush just sounds smarter while lying to everyone

Obama may not be perfect but he's still better than Bush.
PeterOrszagCallMe 2 years ago 3
Yeah I know what you mean on both sides there are unfair expectations to him, he's not going to make money fall from the sky but at the same time he is not going to frigging bankrupt America. Both sides should just leave him alone and let him do his duty.
Cazz814 2 years ago
right another brilliant arguement. No it is not going to fall from the sky so he should give away more money that america does not have to help the lobbyists he said were not going to be a part of his administration? right another obama lie. Bush and obama work for the same ppl open your eyes to the truth the presidency is a joke and so have most of the presidents in the last 100 years
Issypt 2 years ago
Well no President is perfect ever. I think Obama has good intentions but I remember in the beginning when he was the President-Elect some naive supporters seriously thought he would fix the economy in no time. Apparently that's false but I don't believe he is going to ruin us, he's trying let's just all leave him alone and let him attempt to save the economy.
Cazz814 2 years ago
i really dont want to waste my time trying to explain how this works.the economy is in big trouble and obamas direction is making it way worse adding more money and credit is like trying to put out a fire with gas a peter schiff would say.not going to work. you need to subscribe to the peter schiff channel and also alex jones both here on youtube.

Whatever we'll wait and see, he's got the rest of his term in which it will hopefully work. I don't really care what you think, I'm going to see how things turn out, anyway we have no control over what happens. So let's all wait and see that's what I say.
Cazz814 2 years ago
well thats ok it does not much matter if you care what I think while you are waiting and seeing others will be preparing for whats to come instead of following the sheep off the cliff like yourself. I am also pretty sure that your country was founded on the principles that the power was in the ppl hense the const. but keep on giving up your rights....and good luck

DrQuijano 2 years ago
Cenk, I don't believe it's an interpretation of the bill so much as an acknowledgement that the U.S. Constitution automatically supercedes the wrongful language in the bill.
haywoco2 2 years ago
hes ignoring part of.......lets just hope he does the right thing......i trust him
crowdaddy13 2 years ago
I thought Obama took an oath to defend the constitution. His supporters should take him up on it if they don't want him to go down the same road as the last president.
I feel disgusted when presidents shit on the constitution with their actions and at the same time act as if they are the champion of the people.
Snagawaga 2 years ago 5
I agree with Cenk, and Obama is treading into dangerous territory. Especially coming from someone who has taught and practice law at the heightest level. There is a reason why we have 3 distinct branches of government that check one another and the legislative branch has consistently, whether Rep or Dem gets a F for not doing it's job.

I understand the worry but Vetoing and then waiting for a more amenable bill to be crafted might just be too long a process? Not that expediency should be the be all and end all... I don't know.
