  • When does reverse sneezing stop for good?

And wot does it mean if she keeps doing it (like 10 times a day)?

  • Are we sure this is a reverse sneeze and not collapsed trachea?

  • My dog has this it sounds more serious than it is believe me. I went to vet after vet about this. All his xrays for heart/chest/lungs show up excellent and this is what he was diagnosed with. I was assured there can never be stopped breathing or heart problems from this. Dogs do not have saliva glands and when trying to clear their throat this happens often. He is 6 years old now and seems to be getting less of an issue the older he gets.

  • @kay08439 they say its the water we drink.. flouride conspiracy

  • my dog is doing this it terrified me i thought he was going to die! i guess ill find out tomorrow if this is what he is doing or not i hope it is . he is a red heeler

  • i have a dash-poo mix and she had this problem since day one. Yes i thought she was choking/dying the first time she did this that i started 'heimlich maneuver' on a 2 pound dog, quite an experience. she's now 27mths old and does is 2-3 times a day.

  • when my dog does it , it sounds more "slimey" :/

  • Poor dog :c

  • MY dog does this when he gets over-excited. He is completely fine and happy after the episode is over.

  • My dog (shihzu mix) would do this, I would cut her hair around her neck area especially and this seemed to help her from doing this anymore.

  • wtf is this my dog just did it and i shit myself thought it was dieing

  • Comment removed

  • My dog has done this forever and see is fine there not all dieing people settle down

  • My dog had this problem and she ended up dying of heart failure because she could not get oxygen into her lungs

  • I bought a 4 year old Brussells Griffon that was pretty much only used to have puppies all she ever knew was a crate or I was told she "sleeps in the bathroom" the poor thing didn't even know how to play. Anyway when I would come home from work she would get so excited that she would start this reverse sneeze thing & it would break my heart; then I read on here to hold their nose and it worked the very first time. I was so happy. And yes I got her spayed.

  • they need a new name for this though. It doesn't resemble a sneeze in any way. It's way more like an asthma attack and sounds much more serious that just a sneeze

  • @ikya99 Thank you! I always get scared when my dog does it. I have no idea what to do when he does it. I get all panicky.

  • when my dog does this i act like im trying to crank a chainsaw

  • My king charles spaniel does this sometimes. It sound similer to this but not the same. It sounds more like this than it does kennel cough though. Hes been doing it for a while and we've been thinking about taking him to a vet. He does it a bit more when hes excited. Can somebody please tell me what this is????

  • @cainineforever: This could be a collapsed trachea. Usually the first sign is a honking cough, or gagging after eating or drinking. Get a vet's opinion.

  • My pom does this all the time.

  • It's Nasal Pharengal spasm (reverse sneeze). Holding the nose does help.

  • once again, the internet saved me from a visit to the vet :)

  • My chihuahua does this sometimes

  • @C4TR1N4 i have a long haired chihuahua that does this and the last few days he's been doing it more can you tell me what you did for your chihuahua that mite help if you do please let me know ..thanks

  • that sounds nothing like my dogs reverse sneeze

  • My dog did the same with were so scared, after a Vets visit we were more relaxed since he had nothing wrong hsut the reverse sneezing. I found out what inciated the attach, Aussie my dog was digging in the garden going after a creature and the dust made him do this, so he has some allergies. Now he knows and he does not dig anymore he just tells me where the hole is and I can use my hose to scare what ever is eating my veggies ;-)

  • @veronicaenriquez Haha, your dog is so cute! ;D

  • hey is there any way to stop this every few min my dog a pug rat terrier starts making wierd noises like coughing or weezing kind of sounds like that dog but not really than she tries to spit something out but doesn't can someone plz hlp me or tell me wats wrong with her pl

  • His or her trachea has collapsed and he or she is not able to breath very well. It happened to myy dog. R.I.P. Scrappy

  • My dog did something similiar to this, should I take him to the vet???

  • I fucking hate it when my dog does this. Makes me feel bad lol.

  • @PersonguydudeWB when my cat does that i point and laugh at it...

  • @TheGoldmail

Well cats do it all the time, usually because of hairballs. I guess it's scarier with a dog, or maybe I just don't care about cats, lol.

  • @PersonguydudeWB lmao ya that might be a possibility

  • thats him coffing ass wipe

  • Our dog does this, and calming him without having an emotional response stops it.

If he feels that it isn't something to get excited about, he calms down quickly and the "sneeze" subsides.

  • I have 3 dachshounds;minature; and they are all doing this reverse sneeze for the past week. vet says to give them each one half of 25 mg benadryl up to 3 x day.

so far it has not helped; I think it is allergy related here in charleston sc

  • My Boston Terrier does this all the time, whenever he is stressed out, too hot, or excited. We simply talk to him in a quiet voice and stroke his back. Sometimes, he will panic. We get him to "stand", elongating his torso, and we cover his nose gently so that he opens his mouth. This usually stops it right away - it's like swallowing food going down the wrong pipe, they need to open the airway. I find that covering his nose causes him to pop his little mouth open immediately, no need to pry.

  • I have a Yorkshire terrier and she does this too she was Diagnosed with tracheal collapse.

  • i am a vet tech from ohio and i surely wouldnt try to pry my dogs mouth open in that situation but i do agree with the calming strokes and letting them know your there. its just getting junk out that they cant sneeze out so they suck it inward.

  • @B0DTR0T

by 'pry open', I don't mean w/force. As I'd talk to her, calm her, pat her, I'd gently touch the sides of her mouth so she'd instinctively open it, & that made her stop... almost like she's concentrating on that, rather than the tic of doing something out of nervousness.

I started doing it originally 'cause I thought she was suffocating, but I don't resort to it anymore. In fact, I hardly have to do anything for her to stop on her own. She's learned to calm down on her own I think.

  • I let my mom know what you said, I'm going to make her, her own account now. Personally I say introduce a drink in that situation, depending on what was causing the "reverse" sneeze. Food usually sticks to the mucus membranes in the sinuses. If it's from allergies possibly a 25 mg or less depending on the dog should be considered. Oh and my dog has hip displacement and naproxen sodium is by far better than chemicals like Previcox in pain relieve, something to keep in mind.

  • thanks :)

  • Bendryl was what I was referring to with the 25 Mg's, my laptop's touch pad is sensitive.

  • HELLO DR CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME IF THERE ANY MEDICAL OR SURGERY PROCEDURE THAT CAN BE DONE TO STOP THIS CONDITION???

    THANK YOU!!!

  • I squeeze my dogs nose causing him to breath through his mouth..it really seems to work

  • I have a cavalier king charles and she does this too... I freaked out the first time, but i learned that if i gently pry her mouth open with my fingers as i also calm her with sweet words and petting her, it reminds her to breathe thru her mouth and she settles down.

She does this when she gets overly excited, for example when she sees someone (my husband coming home from work) or she gets special praise for doing something right, or whatever gets her happy and/or excited.

  • I have a little dog that reverse sneezes when it is exited just like u explained.. Patting it and being gentle calms her down.

  • jan, my ckcs does this exact thing as well, and for the same reasons. she only seems to do it when she gets excited or is greeting visitors! she is very athletic and will run all over the beach chasing birds with no problems, but when we get home and say hi to grandma it's wheezing up a storm! it sounds horrible and always worries people. i'm glad i found this clip on youtube so i understand it better! i'm gonna try your trick of covering her nose next time to see if opening her mouth helps. ty!

  • @baileydanger Ok, glad to help, but don't put your hand over her nose, just open her mouth from the side gently :) if you do this a few times, she will get used to it - don't forget to sweet talk her while you do this. She won't stop this behavior altogether but she will do it less :) good luck!e you do itso

  • @baileydanger sorry for the words at the end that were cut off, this new system on YT doesn't allow you too see the whole post :/

  • My Maltipoo started doing this after being outside for a while today...she's been doing it off and on all afternoon....Scared me witless but after seeing all the videos am better informed....thanks for the video...helped make ME feel better anyway :D Muffin is enjoying the extra attention!!!!

  • my dog has that...

  • Our veterinary technician, Polly, does a great job imitating this. I'll see if I can video tape her.

  • my rotweiler died by that

  • thats not kennel cough thats something called reverse sneezing.. my dog has that AND kennel cough.. but my dogs stomach doesnt do what that dogs stomach was doing!!

  • our dog has just had the same reverse sneezing and our vet is concerned it might be nasal mites

  • My whippet does this, usually in fall and spring, so it's allergies. I give 1 Benadryl and it goes away.

  • gee...hard to distinguish with cough...tell me how to!!! I'm a newly VET

  • gee, my vet told me that it was kennel cough,

  • Well did they do a test? If it came back positive, then it was kennel cough and not reverse sneezing. They sound very similar.

  • i make the same sound when i see an ugly woman..

  • My 13 yr. old Shiz Zu started this and it's so loud and distressing, I popped a cassette in taped it and called my vet to listen to it. She immediately recognized it as reverse sneezing. I'm so relieved! I thought she was dying! She said to come and pick up some antihistimines and it should help.

  • THAT looked painful

  • omg that poor dog.....that looks so painful

  • It sounds scary, but it's really not. Most dogs don't even get upset by it when it happens. That Iggie is a pretty severe case, though. My dog gets them now and then and they're nowhere near that strong.

  • I have three Italian Greyhounds, and they all do it. I used to think they were hyperventilating until I did some research. From what I've read, it's usually nothing to worry about.

  • Wish I would have seen this before I spent 55.oo to hear a vet tell me this is what my dog has....thanks for posting the video my vet recomended a half of a tab of benedril when needed in case it may be dust mites affecting them. they said this is caused from irritants, eating or drinking to fast ...My dog also takes allergy shots so it may be that we need to get him in for a new dossage. So far the half of a benedril alergy medication has done the trick.

  • My Beagle does this im sp glad to see another dog do it

  • My little pom did this to me last night. He was so frightened he woke me up. But

  • My teacup yorkie does this...

Freaks the shit out of me every time! Not cool when your three pound dog starts sounding like she's going to puke...

  • when my dog does this it really freaks me out and scares me =(

  • my shih-tzu dose this use to freak me out

  • I was very frightened for my little Rat Terrier that seemed to do this exasperating cough that ended with the sound of trying to bring something up from her throat. I feared Heart worms but this is the exact thing she is doing as posted in this video. Thank you for posting this. I will still have her checked out by my vet just for precaution.

  • Hey, i know i am replying to your comment made 2 months ago... ( about the reverse sneeze) Did you see the vet? and was it reverse sneeze in the end.... my dog is experiencing exactly what you posted. The cough that ends with them sounding like they want to bring something up?

  • that's kennel cough

  • eew

  • my toy australian shepherd does this after he drinks water. it doesnt sound like that, but its the same thing. you can have surgery done, but it usually doesnt work...my friend had surgery on her dog and he still does it.

  • My papillon does the same thing. It's a horrible thing to watch, it may not be life threatening but clearly the dog goes through extreme discomfort.

  • my dog does this all the time, and I thought it was because she was part pug. thanks for the video.

  • Oh my dog just did this like 10 minutes ago and I was like... what's this :S fortunatly my sister is an animal vet and she explained it all :)

  • what is your problem

if what you say you do with animals is true you have no right to own a pet

  • All my several dogs over the years made a wheezing sound I thought was asthma. It sounded exactly alike in all of them but different from this dog.

  • is that normal?

  • its common in small dogs. its called Paroxysmal Respiration

  • omg finally I find out what's wrong with my Chi. He does that everytime he gets a little excited or probably anxious and we thought there was something wrong. The vet did give us meds for him and it helped a little but it came back once the meds were finished. Usually when he does it we leave him alone or I'll pat his back a little (that seems to help sorta)

  • My experiments suggest that it is a symptom of anxiety. To treat it, generally ignore your dog, don't touch the dog & do not stare at the dog and generally keep 3 metre distance away from your dog. Eliminate possible bad experiences such as baths, cameras, cuddles etc. Only offer encouragement from afar by saying good dog or whatever every so often. Because nobody is overwhelming or traumatizing the dogs reverse sneezing will begin to disappear. The over-attention freaks the dogs out.

  • Thanks for posting this. I have told my vet about what my dog is doing and now can finally tell her what it is and hopefully get her treated! At least the vet will understand what I'm seeing. And test from there.

This could also be Dyspnea in dogs. A tumor on lungs, heart problems, etc. At least this will help to have the vet understand what is happening. She had three episodes yesterday.

Too scarrey to chance it might be nothing!!

  • Reverse sneezing, also known as the "mechanosensitive aspiration reflex" is a common phenomenon in dogs. In a regular sneeze, your dog pushes air out through the nose; however, in a reverse sneeze, air is pulled rapidly in through the nose producing a noisy inspiratory effort.

  • The exact reason for these reverse sneezing episodes is unknown but may be related to allergies, nasal irritants, or nasal inflammation. Any age, breed or sex can be affected.

A reverse sneeze may look disturbing many people fear that their dog is not breathing during these episodes but it is not a harmful condition and there are no ill effects. Reverse sneezing attacks are generally quite brief and not life threatening. Between episodes, the dog acts normal.

  • my dog is eating his food without chewing, he just swallow it in once. atm i think he has some of his food in his troat:\

he is making this noise, and he sounds like he is suffocating

    what to do?:\

i tried the heimlich maneuvrea already.. no results

  • Gah.

    My chiweenie does this. :(

I'm glad I found out what it is.

  • i would rather go to the pet docter then relying on this movies of reverse sneezing.. sorry for my rubbish english..

  • oh my goodness. it's 3:26 am, my baby just started doing that i FREAKED i thought she was having an asthma attack so I googled it but came across reverse sneeze then came here saw this and seriously THANK YOU GOD BLESS YOU for having this.

i was really scared, but it looked just like this so yeah

    wow wow thanks

  • My pit bull wakes me from sleeping doing this shit im really scared even though they say its harmless

  • my chihuahua does something similar. it scares the crap out of me everytime!

  • Mine too. It scares me absolutely to death everytime as well. I rub her throat, hold her and talk to her and she calms down and begins to breathe normally again. But it is still terrifying.

  • my chihuahua is 10 mths old and has been reverse sneezing since she was 10 weeks old i today found out what it was shes now 10 mths old and like you I felt the same way I just pick her up and calm her down, apparently its common

  • My dog is doing this a lot more after she had surgery about a month ago, and a breathing tube was inserted for precaution. I am going to get her checked out, as she could be starting to suffer from collapsed trachea, if it is happening more often (which for us it is).

  • I'm just saying that it isn't always harmless so it's not something you should overlook.

  • My Pomeranian used to do this. We never though anything of it because she had almost always done it. Then it started getting worse so we took her to the vet and apparently she was going into congestive heart failure :(

Apparently her little heart was so big and inflamed that it was pressing on her esophagus causing her to hack and sneeze just like that dog. We put her on some meds which helped her out for a while; she actually got better. Then it suddenly got worse and we had to put her down :(

  • @jyynx14 Sorry to hear that :'(

  • I had a Lhasa and he did this and was quite shaken by it. He would come running to me and I would pet him and put my hand in front of his nose for a couple of seconds and it usually stopped it. My French bulldog does this as well.

  • My PB American Eskimo also does this, thought she was choking and gagging. She doesnt like it but she gets over it. What a relief to know its not serious.

  • My female Rotty has recently starting doing this. I just got off of the phone with my vet, and she suggested it was reverse sneezing. I had never heard of this, so obviously i was relieved to find out that it wasn't serious. It is certainly alarming to see it, and i originally thought it might be a seizure.

If anyone has a dog who is doing this, just make you pet as comfortable as possible, and talk them through it. They are not in pain. They snap out of it quickly, no harm has been done.

  • yep!

  • My Dacshund mix does this and its scary.

  • ?????????????

  • Our Italian Greyhound did this from November - until April - then it went away - we took her to vet twice and both times received antibiotics and cough suppressants - Finally the cough just cleared up on its own. I am wondering if her cure is associated with the warmer weather.

  • my am staff does this occasionally. it only lasts about 20 seconds. but its alot louder and more drastic. but he is a picture of health other than that. ...allergies?

  • So it's ok when they do this? Because my dog will go at least a minute or two doing this..

  • As a veterinarian I was searching for a clip to show clients what a reverse sneeze looks and sounds like. It can sound different in every dog, but is often quite alarming to hear. This is NOT kennel cough, nor is it necessarily of any concern. It is a reflex clearing of the nose and sinuses. If the condition persists it should be discussed with your veterinarian, as it could be related to some specific cause, though usually not. Most times it's quite harmless.

  • thanks just paid a vet 55 dollars to tell me just what you said here. She told me to google it and here I am.... I am still glad they got checked out.. better to be on the safe side...

  • This is NOT kennel cough.

  • @shdigun who said it was? it's reverse sneeze idiot

  • wtf happened to him? I'm confused

  • My greyhounds (normal size, not italian) do this fairly frequently, and I too almost had a heart attack when I saw it the first time.

  • my dog Taco have done so many times the same , and I almost had a coronary thinking he had an asthma attack
