I remember when the movie came out and my father took me to the premier. Seen all the stars from the movie. Never get tired of looking at the DVD. All the Super-Stars from the movie are slowly leaving us and for that reason we ALL must cherish the the ones still here. R.I.P. Lena Horne, Nipsy Russell, Micheal Jackson, Ted Ross, Melba King. Love all you then and are still in my heart. Thank-you for the memories you left me with.
If it wasn't for "The Wiz" I would have thought this was some song from 1920's minstrels it really has that Southern minstrel feel or one of those songs you hear from the Harlem Cotton clubs
I'm 32 going on 33 next month and i literally grew up with this movie because my parents ALWAYS watched this movie and I'd watch it with them of course. Even at the age of maybe 3 or 4, this song has always stood out to me, the way he sings this song really gets to me, and even more so now as an adult. I can honestly say that this song does bring tears to my eyes because the depth of the song is so deep that you cant help but show some emotion, and how much i miss real music.
@stromboldt You know that Nas is the greatest rapper of all time, right? And rap isn't what you hear on the radio. That's mainstream. Nas wasn't on the radio much. His best songs weren't. He provided depth in his lyricism, and he rapped for a purpose. C'mon man.
@stromboldt Based on everything he did for music. He's not my favorite rapper, and I don't have an obsession for him. If you actually hear his music, and listen with an unbiased ear, you might learn something.
@SymbiSpidey Because for some reason taking a vocal sample or live instrumentation sample and using it as a template and making something completely new with it is completely uncreative.Covers are ten times better, you don't have to write the song or music, just sing words someone else wrote and performed before you and people will love it.That's the only way to go because if you're going to use something you didn't create, don't put your spin on it because being a follower is what makes legends.
Seriously, people support covers of all sorts of songs where all the artists do is replay the same exact notes from the previous song on whatever instrument, and then copy the lyrics word for word? But twisting and re-structuring the melody altogether is bad?
Honestly, I think people just look for reasons to hate and look down on rap music. Not to mention that there are many producers out there who are capable of both sampling AND making their own original sounds too.
@stromboldt I guess you understand now whats the difference between Hip-Hop & Rap LOL now wipe that vomit off the floor because if it wasn't for NAS the younger generation wouldn't even know about this song!!!! It would be like few hundred views for this amazing song
@stromboldt Nasir Olu Dara Jones is one of the few true geniuses of today in the music industry. He didn't destroy this song, sampling a song is a rapper's ultimate way of paying tribute to the greatest artists of the past. You need to quit thinking so narrowmindedly an accept the fact that hip hop isn't all about the stupid bullshit that you hear on the radio, and that there's real artists out there like Nas that actually put at least as much soul into there music as artists like Nipsey Russel.
Man I'm 21 y/o and this was my mothers favorite movie and when I was younger she bought it for me after looking everywhere for it! I remember when my brother played the Tinman in this...I had never heard this song and my brother sang it so beautifully I just started crying...I was fourteen...jeez...
to me, the wiz is just as good as the wizard of oz. . it did not do well at the box office becuz i think people were afraid of it like willy wonka in the 70s. very good music (quincy jones) and great acting (ross, jackonson, etc)
This song and Lena Horne singin "If You Believe" are the 2 songs I absolutely love from this movie. As a matter of fact, the only reason I bought the DVD was to see Lena Horne (R.I.P)! Lol! After watching a few times, I fell in love with "What Would I Do."

@pepperannziggi I agree finding stars that could carry songs would be an issue, but imagine Jamie Foxx could perform What Would I Do. Stephanie Mills singing ability during that time was much better than Diana Ross. Not slamming Ms. Ross, but the role should have gone to Stephanie, however Ms. Ross got it on star power and the backing of Motown.
Jamie Fox could sing What Would I Do. I agree that finding stars that could carry the singing would be issue. Stephanie Mills version of home is much superior to Diana Ross' version. Not slamming Ms. Ross, but Stephanie Mills should have played Dorothy in the film version, but Motown turned the musical into a movie and Diana was given the role.

@Freedomx22 Maybe Chris Rock or Dave Chapelle should play The Wiz in Richard Pryors honor. But if they where to do remake it the would have to do major adjust to the Emerald City Scene because that was film at the WTC which sadly is gone. But Nevertheless it would be cool having a remake.Maybe J.Hudson(j/k), or Ashanti ,maybe Tajari Henson could play dorthy.

@datrustarr why not man i think if they had people put some real good music in it other than those songs at the top of the charts, it would be good. like they did R&b in here right. so imagine a neo soul wiz. that would be freakin amazing

I just rediscovered this film about 4 days ago. Used to be one of my favorites when I was a kid. Incredible performance by Nipsey Russell.
