@tasosk3 I'm probably too young to completely understand the meaning of the song, since I never lived under the dictatorship, which lasted until 1974 in Portugal. Also, because songs (as well as newspapers, books, films, etc.) could only be published after undergoing a censorship process by the political police, many things had to be criticized in such a way that the censors wouldn't understand and cut it out.

@tasosk3 This adds a problem, which is that many thin can have different connotations depending on how you «read» the song. What I can tell you is my personal interpretation of it. For instance, I see the first verse, which translates as: «may the sun, the wine and the flowers come» as a reference to the hippies. The third verse («wars forgotten for love») refers to the colonial war going on in the Portuguese African colonies.

@tasosk3 Tenth verse («may the party last until dawn») is purely subversive: in a conservative country, where the official doctrine conveyed by the State was «God, People and Family», talking about parties lasting all night long... I rest my case! Thirteenth verse («bread, wine and roses on the tables») reminds me of socialism.

@tasosk3 My favourite are the last two verses («may the young and the old ones come, but I take advice from none»). I see them as referring to Marcello Caetano's (the dictator in power at the time) «Family talks», a television talk show (if we can call it this way) that he hosted as a way to be directly in touch and «give good advice» to the Portuguese people.

As I said, this is my interpretation, other people (particularly if they actually lived in this period) may have different views.

@mb731 Its lyrics actually say "don't care about expenses, push away all the sadness, bread and wine over the tables". It's dramatic/joyful tone fits the idea of pushing away the sadness that the oppression of the dictatorship, harsh economic situation and the colonial wars going on at that time in Portugal, and be happy for a moment.

Esta canção merecia uma classificação bem melhor do que aquela que teve, essa dor regime não querer aqui a Europa é tão estúpida, não duvido da sua veracidade, aliás sei que o é porque ouvi dizer isso a alguém na tv. Mas que eu saiba em 1971 ganhou o Mónaco e em 72 o ESC fez-se no Reino Unido. Logo essa desculpa é muito estúpida. Essa foi uma óptima hipótese de ganhar o ESC, agora não ganhamos nem que o Sócas pague bem...
