i remember as a boy in bray i was beaten for mixing with what they call travellers me not having a view on the difference did not stop going to them they wher so kind to me and always polite they where great horsemen sadly 2 of them have died dan was a great man sometimes the irish are so racialist against their own just because they dont want to live in homes . ionly aw the family 4 years ago bles them all
A Fine performance of this song written by Ewan MacColl bu I have a problem. Ewan MacColl writes such songs as a middle class man populating his songs with working class phrases to gain credibility in an artificial and phony way. This is not the stuff of good poetry.
correct, sang this song for a traveller in a dundee boozer.he laughed said it wasnt about travellers as the verse about bye laws really related to english romanies.dirty old town is written about salford, outside manchester.scottish travellers arent irish either although there are irish travellers up there.the scottish travellers are called "summer walkers" and were big into pearl fishing in rivers etc.irish travellers are also renowned exponents of road bowling and kept it going in west limerick.
I am a romany gypsy and have to say this song is not irish at all. It was written by Ewan MacColl in 1964,and MacColl was born in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire to Scottish parents, he also wrote Dirty Old Town another song that is mistaken by people as being irish. Both are not irish and refer to the scots cant and romany tongue. Irish pavee are not gypsies they are irsh pavee
i remember me Da telling me bout back in Ardoyne Belfast stealing the Gypsys horses and riding through the town at 3am.. and also stealin the old push start guarda motorbikes in the late 50`s early 60`s. i came around in 1980 then we moved to Australia in 1990 cos i was umm yeahh getting pulled up all the time
heard a live version of this at folkworks summer school and it was beautiful! i've been wanting to hear it again ever since, but i can't find a version anywhere thats anywhere near as good as the seriously advanced band at folkworks 2010. folkworks is amazing!!
@50077756 indeed i think you comments are based on ignorance...im a traveler and we pay our taxes, you will find that most tax evaders are whit collar workers, perhaps if you had a tad more education you would be able to converse with the commentators on here , sad for you .

i am a traveller and to answer some questions asked.. we like to be called Pavee's or Travellers tinker is just a job not what we are called and it's kind of offensive to us and the only relation we have with the romai is that we are both nomadic we can our own language (cant/gammon) songs and costoms :)
I visited Eire in 1970 and I remember seeing a Tinker campsite, complete with tent etc. Can anyone please let me know if there are any Tinkers in Ireland today that lead that kind of life anymore, or have they all settled in housing projects? OIn this song, the singer mentions..."there Romani speaking". Does anyone know if the Tinkers indeed spoke the Romani lanuage? That would be very interesting as it seems to conect the Tinkers with the Gypsies of eastern europe.
sorry it shud have begun with SAD, not sas !

Ewan McColl wrote this song and like the Shoals of Herring it has become a part of the folk tradition although it was written relatively recently.
