Saw them live several times in the 70`s including the Reading festivals 1974 & 1975 and at the Civic hall St Albans in `75. I have just started to buy the lost albums although I do have the first two. Gary Holton - top front man and excellent band. Sorely missed.
I had heard of these guys thanks to reading Melody Maker back in the 1970's, but I can't remember any of their records every getting released here in the states, so I hadn't been able to listen to them until now. This is a cool song. It's kinda right in the middle between Slade and Mott the Hoople. Plus the guitarist with the black Les Paul reminds me of the guitarist in Boomtown Rats.
I saw HMK five times in 70s....everyone a classic. Saw the (new) HMK at Skegness last week (Jan 2011) they rock.....recommend you check them out. God bless the Kids

@denisedye1 Yep, was lucky enough to see them a few times, he was indeed an amazing showman :) There was also a Norfolk band around at the same time called Zorro who did a few HMK covers, and saw them at Camden Music Machine way back in the day, and Gary came on and did a couple of songs with them~their frontman was called Dave Smith, he was like a blonde version of Gary! (2 of Zorro later went on to join Splodgenessabounds). Ah the 70's ... :)
yes, this is early punkrock, hahahaha. a great band. they was one or two years to early with this rough songs . a little bit later, and noone today would remember sex pistols...
I am a year 67 and have missed no result from "Disco" with the presenter Ilya Richter in the German television broadcasting station ZDF. Just yesterday afternoon from 16:35 till 17:20 there ran in the German digital television broadcasting station "ZDF-theatrical canal" a repetition this "Disco" result with "Delirious" from the Heavy Metal kids, into the bargain Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Graham Bonnet and Uriah Heep. This was still a music!!!! Keep on rockin' from Germany!!!
rich kids dont go well with metal or punk or rock, they should stay with their dreamy synths and the sound of their sweet cars and classy temp controlled air conditioning.
You know I usually don't get into these genre debates over bands but what were Heavy Metal Kids actually considered?! Were they considered a punk rock band?
They weren't considered a punk band at all, they had been around since at least 72 well before punk. They were considered a heavy rock band. Interestingly, when they started, the term 'heavy metal' term wasn't widely used ie. before Maiden etc..all bands like this were called heavy rock. They do look more punk in this video...probably influenced by the punk look around in 77. Kind of an English Ndw York Dolls really.
@imadinnerlady: That's funny, I've tried to tell people that on Black Sabbath videos from like 1970 that Zep, Sabbath, Purple, etc. were all just called "heavy rock" back then. But when you get into it with hardcore Sabbath fans....sheesh. Since this vid is from when? 1977? 78? They were probably influenced by the new punk scene.
gary holton is amazing i love him sooooooooo much n thanks for puttin this video on here i am watchin it all the time lol when i'm not watchin auf wiedersehen pet!!!
me n my frend luv gary holton and we were soooo sad when he died and we only knew who he was when we saw the extremely fantastic auf wiedersehen pet!!! we still luv u gary!!!!
He loved playing in Germany because he was always mistaken for Ronny Wood from the Rolling Stones. That meant he could get his end away with as many German ladies as he wanted.
His experience of this was added to his character "Wayne" in Auf Weirdesehen Pet when he was in Germany, saying, "I' signed a few autographs for a few birds the other day, didn't jump em though, I wouldn't want to take advantage of Ronny's good name!"
Fairplay Nacho - I love Brian Johnson as well but what I'm getting at is that - while we all know what a hugely successful band AC/DC are - if people are gonna talk about whether he should have / could have / would have joined AC/DC it's undermiming the importance of one of the best bands of all time - THE HEAVY METAL KIDS
he would have been perfick for AC/DC - but sadly would have snuffed it soon after joining and they would thus be looking for another chanteuse soon after
Agree teenangel69 - A huge majority of young bands all look (and sound) the same, you be hard pushed these days to look at a teenager and pinpoint what band(s) they were really into.
Hanoi Rocks took a lot from this fantastic band and they admit it but you should go back earlier. The Kids were role models for the Pistols, the Clash, and the Damned. All these bands own up to this.
I like this song, but is the lead singer on speed!?
and how could McFly of been said to of copied this with there song "Please Please".
Lets get this straight im not slagging this song of, I like it, I just can't understand the argument of why Mcfly would of copied it, cus they kinda didn't...
"Delirious" is one of the best punk rock songs ever written, without question.
Gary Holton was one of the best (if not the best) British rock band frontmen ever...WAY ahead of his time & a brilliant actor.
The Sex Pistols admit to ripping this band off wholesale.
Three facts...yet who has heard of this seminal band? Not many. A lesson learned. Popularity means NOTHING. This band destroyed like no other. RIP Gary Holton.
The singer is Gary Holton, undoubtedly the best frontman in Britain at the time & also one of Britain's best loved actors for his appearance in a tv series called "Auf Wiedersehen Pet". John Lydon of the Sex Pistols is said to have told Holton "How does it feel to have been ripped off?", which is a tacit admission that Lydon basically ripped off Holton. In other words, the Heavy Metal Kids were playing punk BEFORE the Sex Pistols. Holton was a one off.
Has anyone heard the McFly song that got to number one called Please Please? No please don't stop reading this! They nick a whole section of this song 'No one knows what I'm about, That's why I just scream and shout, Maybe I'm not on the right side of it' They sing the whole of that melody to different words. Can't Ronnie and Keith take them to court or something the little bastards.
Yes, you're absolutely right, they've stolen the pre chorus section completely. Not that the 14 yr olds who are their target audience would know who the Heavy Metal Kids are. It would be great if they could be sued for it though...the little wankers.
saw them many times in the day, they were a brilliant live band, they should have been massive. plus my sister was good mates with gary, god bless im, from johnnyboy.
