Raises significant questions with respect to business, and business will be the vehicle that is most likely to assist in creating a sustainable world.
I enjoyed this and liked the fact that there were a number of different people being interviewed - also like the additional locational footage. Interesting ideas and sounds like China is in store for a whole lot of change.
Introduction drew you in with combination of music and images, good to have three different presenters, sensible discussions and good point about leading by example
Great points that everyone has mentioned.. I watched a video on the waterways in China on 60 minutes the other night.. did anyone else see it? I'd like to see a wind farm the size of New York!
pollution is obviously a consequence of china becoming the worlds manufacturer, in the industrial revolution in the uk pollution was just a bad and there were plenty of dirty jobs with no OHS. From what i know the Chinese don't care about their workforce but i hope the factories that are controlled overseas do have health standards like they do in nz and the uk.
I agree...china is big but they are not the only problem. A lot of money is produced in factories that don't care a lot for the environment, only the profit. It is the responsibility of everyone to change this.
It's a shame that sustainability is one of those things that even if 99% of the world support it and do their bit it may not be enough. I like the lead by example approach though, hopefully if countries set good examples and come out with new technology that makes it easier and efficient for both everyday people and big companies to be enviro-friendly then we will soon see changes =)
After six years living in Vietnam, I know it's not about 'pointing the finger'. It's about trying to help developing countries not to make the mistakes developed countries made before the impacts of certain activities were properly understood. Of course, there are varying degrees to which NGO's, eco-groups and corporate concerns are successful in conveying that concept.
I agree business dan, the thing is the western companys that invest heavily in the emerging nations dont take enough resposibility for the environment.
We cannot just point the finder at China and make an example of them when the Western world greedily consumes and demands its products. Some more in-depth examples of foreign companies would be interesting.
I would say our love of importing deflation, ie cheap crappy products and any products from China (obviously a lot are good quality too) means we are very responsible for pollution in China and they have been vunerable to this. I love when US commentators point the finger, especially when the a US citizen consumes 8x the energy of a Chinese person, approx 25% of world energy and wont join Kyoto. Lets start with our own backyard and our 100 years of flat out CONSUMING.
City design is so important. Here in Hamburg it is very easy for us, even with 2 kids, to not have a car, and shop at local, non pulluting suppliers. But many places it's not so easy, even in the 'west'
Good video. It will probably be a couple of generations before we see things healthy in China. We still struggle in the west so how can we expect China to be so forward thinking.
I agree with businessexpertandre.. No doubt there is climate change, but there are so many reasons that wouldn't make half the story/contraversy/buzz/money.
to my mind the problems are many; china realises its own power to not ratify any environmental act it chooses not to. the large amounts of money to be made by investment in labour intensive industry in china. i could go on. investment in science in developed countries and in china is the core technology to overcome pollution. the only way they will implement it is if it's cost effective, sadly!
I'm all about reducing pollution and technologies are helping to reduce this. I just wish people wouldn't get pollution confused with the 'theory of global warming', which in my book does not have solid evidence to back it but simply a media frenzy exploiting something topical and controversial.
businessexpertandre and I wish that people were a bit aware of the basic difference between the two. There was a show on PrimeTV a month ago about this. I just wish I could remember the name of the show!
The responsibility of cleaning up the environment is everyone's responsibility. I agree with businesstvAndie, we should be asking "What can we do to help?"
We seem to forget that we are partly responsible for the high pollution rate in the emerging markets and most of them are very concerned about the enviornment. What we do next to help them solve these environmental issues, should be one of our top most agenda's today.
I like his reference to environmental issues being part of the sustainability agenda which is more encompassing. Expertise and competencies in these fields will be a source of competitive advantage in the future

I live in Tasmania where we take a lot of pride in our environment. I think a lot of people take this for granted though.

Yep agree that we can't just point the finger...we need to look at the way we behave and what we demand from places like China.
