The more I listen to this song the more I think it's one of their best ever. It sticks with me and parts of it pop into my head throughout the day as I'm doing other things.
Lol, Reverend. I knew about the Leo Sayer one, but hadn't heard this bridge similarity yet. PS: caught these guys in H-wood in 72...definitely contrary to the prevailing folk/country/rock of the time.
For years, I've been looking for a song from which The Police could have stolen the bridge of 'Every Breath You Take', and now I've found it! You can do a medley of 'Stand By Me', 'More Than I Can Say', and 'Thank God It's Not Christmas' in the style of 'EBYT', never pay Sting a dime, and still sound like you're playing the 1983 massive hit single from the 'Synchronicity' LP.
You know when you sing something in the car and make believe you are replacing the lead singer .... and you have lived with the song for seemingly ever throughout your life ... well this is my song .... if you want a night off Russell, I'll do this one for you and then catch up with you later at bedtime xx
I would honestly say that Sparks are the greatest American band of all time.. and I'm a huge Flaming Lips/Interpol/Doors/Eels/My Morning Jacket etc etc fan
I think this is a class track. I always feel that this is more ANTI-CxxxxxxxS song in an I-RON-EE kind of way.....that's why i play this round that time of year....lol!
with a quality contralto voice and a Kwazulu Natal schoolboys and girls chorale dis song s DEBASTING MASTERPIECE thanks Ron Thanks Russell. Thanks but yes ¡thanks
I was eleven when I bought this album all the hippies in the record store were looking down at me and I was a bit scared. I've spent so many Xmas with that song since then (althrough my punk years, my rap years, my house years, my old years hahaha)
@Pythr i was 11 too!! and it was in Sweden..living in a small town north or Gothenburg..and i was saving up my week allowance for 2 months to be able to buy it..in the meanwhile running accross the street to the local shoppingmall record shop window and looking at the LP cover in the window EVERY SINGLE DAY..sometimes 3 times a day..going to school, coming home from school..and in the evening after having done my home work. This LP occupied my mind 24/7.

My favourite ever Sparks song. I bought the album in '74 for 'This Town...' and when I got to this track I wondered why this wasn't the single.

@reverendflash I never made the connection between the Police and Sparks, but it's definitely there. Great catch, man. Sparks > The Police.
