What was lost above: BUCK, and maybe Don, is the only guy I ever met that was scarier, in a professional manner, than Sifu Mallen.
I don't care what style you practice, and other styles have the iron bell, you have NO IDEA what it's like to come up against a shaolin master that has this thick, steel-ish muscle of the iron shirt
Buck's lineage BTW, Wong-fei->Lam sai->Lam jo->Buck. No BS, look the names up if you need to. You may not know it, but you have no biz knocking him for anything.
I'm glad I found this and can offer first hand advice to some SORELY mistaken people.
I studied with Sifu Mallen in UT for 3+ years. He was with buck since erly 70s and was maybe his #1 or sifu. You guys have NO IDEA what it's like to face someone who mastered tid sin kuen, developing a true "iron shirt" torso. Ask Sifu Don HambyofLA, going for his middle is the biggest and maybe last mistake you could make anyway! But BUCK is too nice to reallyhurt you! :) He is the best and a gentleman
All the people commenting on the Master's weight----This is your opinion and your cultural bias. I too think he should lose weight---but I'm Brazilian and that's how WE think. It does not mean everyone thinks this way. I once asked a Japanese Karate Master why he smoked? He laughed at me, and said I am not an athlete, I'm a fighter. We think fighters are athletes, but not everyone thinks this way. So learn Kung Fu from him, but diet from someone else. No master is "a one stop shop".
Sifu likes to party! I used to train with him back in the late 70's. He is not in great shape because of that, but as a member of the Black Belt Hall of fame, He's still deadly and will be until he's no longer on this planet.
If you're any where close, take his class. He's not as hard as he was back in the day!
I really don't see the problem with enjoying martial arts and eating! He likes both ... so what? Mby he's trained so much in his youth that he enjoys realaxing a bit more now he's lived a long (and eventfull) life?
People get so judgemental it's unreal sometimes ... I'm sure this man could fuck up most people on youtube (ofc me included) with one hand whilst eating a hotdog at the same time with the other!

@Soulblackman many older chinese stylists develop this so-called "gut" because they turn their training from external forms to internal arts like tai chi, bagua, and chi-kung, in which expansion of breathing from the diaphragm is emphasized. but i'm sure sifu kong has enjoyed many a hearty meal too. :)
@unclebraddah The latter is more like it. I don't buy that "chi" explanation at all. You eat right, work out, eliminate, you don't get the gut, period.
@Soulblackman I'm not trying to sell you anything. lol...it's the truth. also take into consideration that sifu kong is probably at least in his mid '60's here. gut or not, he's still a very capable teacher and practitioner.
@unclebraddah For Buck, that's 4 sure. I understand that he's getting up in age & had slowed down a bit. An instructor I had a long time ago, made me aware that many masters do not train/take care of themselves as they did when they were younger. Certainly, this isn't an issue limited to sifus, but people in general in the US. I don't recall seeing many fat masters in Asia. I understand Chi from an internal/breath standpoint, but keeping the body in shape is a part of Chi maintenance as well.
@unclebraddah I don't get it. You were challenging me up 'till this point. I guess you had to reflect and think about your own Sifu. I know, with the realities of life, family, aging, work, financial, it becomes tougher to keep in shape, but you've got to try. Of course, you're not going to be at the same physical level as when you were younger, but I tire of seeing fat masters, and then worse, hear some "chi" excuses. If you can't train more, eat less.
You saw it as a challenge. I just stated facts. Can't force you to believe anything about dan tien/chi breathing and the way some of these masters "look" if you don't wanna and if you tire of seeing fat masters. Reflecting on my own Sifu has no bearing on how I view Sifu Kong's physical appearance. I take each individual on as they present themselves. That's all.
@unclebraddah Ur simply backtracking and too proud & arrogant to admit that I was correct all along. That "chi" belly is FAT, or should I say, "an impacted colon" from too much pork, rice and soy, and not enough physical working out.
@unclebraddah One day, when or IF you become less infatuated with these masters, you'll submit to the truth and recognize that they've been selling you a bill of goods as to why they're out of shape.Sifu Kong is older, so he's picked up body weight. If he gives up that rice, he'll lose that gut, without losing his chi. Actually, his chi will be enhanced.
@Soulblackman Sifu Kong Has gained weight because his knee is bad and he can't train as he used to, but do not let his gut fool you, he is still a very dangerous man.
hello there i thing we have some connection do u have a salvadorean training brother??? because he was the one who started kung fu hung gar here in el salvador long time ago, and hes teacher is buck sam kong so for me both of them r my teacher too pls response have a nice day
This stuff is great! This kind of stuff can be added to any martial arts...I wish I could find a teacher like this guy! I am in Beijing, China now and have lived her for four years...but nobody teaches combat here...just wushu nonsense.
@wombatfredman I know what you mean. Unfortuneately this has been one of the downfalls of Kung Fu. However, there are many books and DVDs out there that teach these techniques. It's not ideal, but when there is no qualified instructor around these are the next best thing. Shoalin Chin Na by Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming would probably be the best resource on these types of movements.
That comment shows how owning a few books doesn't make you smarter. He looked like that when I was his student back in the 80's and he could bounce a 250lb student around like a pinata!
looks can be deceiving! he almost threw my ass through a wall once at a seminar and i'm over 200 pounds!! it was a simple technique that i can still do 14 years later without even thinking about it. he is truly a master teacher!
Great! This fat bastard has been around since before the rice nooder! I bought his very first book in 1972! YOO HOO!

@unclebraddah Didn't suggest otherwise, just noting how unfortunate he let himself go and got his gut, which is due to eating.
