I think the guy was part of the Atlantic Challenge where you have to row across the Atlantic Ocean. I guess your skin would show signs of stress, dehydration, pressure sores etc. The fabric of those shorts would abrase the skin, lycra and Vaseline works pretty well.

The shorts were for modesty while I was videoing -- I normally wore nothing, and sat on sheepskin. You're right about the skin showing signs of stress.
