  • If you like this buy his Bach Cantatas for solo alto. It's sublime

  • Andreas is phenomenal .... beautiful performace.

  • 'She bid me take life easy" is an act of soft censorship. The original words are "she bid me to take love easy". It signifies the regret of a young man who ignores the plea of his young lover to be gentle with her.

  • @Tphilpott1 It IS the BBC.

  • bad quality

  • Right. The sound sucks. Saturated.

  • @lestertrad John Williams' tone is always that bad ;)

  • this is wonderful, but someone MUST REUPLOAD this!!!

    the audio is too bad...

  • I would rather hear David Hurley from The King's Singers perform this piece. For beauty of tone, clarity and warmth of timbre, he is far better, to me.

  • @divaskater .. Ooh I think I would lLOVE to hear David Hurley sing this, with the brilliant John Williams playing guitar beside him, with the rest of the Kings singers lending their beautiful voices too..*ahh I can hear it in my head anyway... sighs*

I must say though, that I do love Andreas voice too...

Thanks for posting this lovely gem @aeolaus ...

My very best regards to you from Wales UK .. :0)x

  • Interesting - he puts a lot more meat in his voice in this version than in his recording with orchestra...

  • 18 people are bieber fans that cant appreciate angel songs .:)

  • brilliant singer brilliant playing, this made my evening. thank you for posting.

  • Saw him last night ! :D He was amazing! :)

  • @OperaSamia so did my teacher! hahha :P

  • BRAVO BRAVO!!IDIOTS SAY NO!

  • el señor scholl es un gran contratenor, su timbre es unico......yo soy contratenor contralto y ver a este magnifico cantante me sirve com inspiracion de verdad que si

  • Very beautiful. Bravo. Thanks for posting.

  • pretty fantastic!

  • scholl couldn`t make a boring performance even if he tried.. !

  • he's from my hometown o.O i'm really proud to live there right now! his voice is beautiful.

  • i dont think this song is for scholl..

  • @jimdivax Jim honey, I've met him. He's massive, German, hairy and would drink you under the table. But your comment made me laugh like no other.

  • @pianomags You hardly need to justify him like that, even if he was the campest man on earth, such stupid comments are unjustified (I mean Jim's).

  • How honourably Mr. Scholl represents not only countertenors but also his country Germany as an ambassador in this so British musical ceremony. It is as if Mr. Handel himself had come back to London. Well done, Mr. Scholl. What a remarkeable manifestation of how music can bring piece and heel wounds and makes us think of what really matters in life.

  • The most beautiful voice I have ever heard.

  • @irwin: thanks....

  • Part II: Whats the name of this song....anyone know this???Please help me.

  • @powermoon2000 it's called "fairest isle", by henry purcell, from his "opera" king arthur

  • What a wonderful interpretation by Scholl. Bravo

  • he's hot, I would certainly do him!

  • truly angelic singing!

  • Simply beautiful! What else is there to say.

  • Renowned - Known or talked about by many people

  • what "renowned" means?

  • just perfect

  • he has the most beautiful voice i have ever heard in my entire life!!!!!!!!!!

just amazing. he sings like an angel. soft and just lovely

  • he is and has always been my inspiration and my guide in my pursuit of my singing career, only he can cast a spell on me as he does...

  • Like 3 years ago I heard this on youtube for the first time, and it was also the first professional countertenor i ever heard. From that moment I loved his voice and this video, and after all these years I still do. How beautiful.. Can't be sung better than this.

  • Voice and guitare to fill this ENORMOUS hall!

In front of THOUSANDS of spectators!!!

When I think of all the musicians who need microphones....

  • @1401JSC Andrea Boccelli is not an American

  • What on earth are you talking about?

  • Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;

She passed the salley gardens with little snow-white feet.

    She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree;

But I, being young and foolish, with her did not agree.

In a field by the river my love and I did stand,

And on my leaning shoulder she laid her snow-white hand.

    She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;

But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

  • Extraordinari, quina llàstima que aquest tipus de veu sigui molt poc acceptades pel gran public.

    FERRAN (malalt de Bach)

    des de Barcelona (Catalunya)

  • I prefer John McCormack`s version of this lovely old Irish song. There are many other McCormack songs on youtube too that I like

  • great ! ! !

  • I think Andreas Scholl is an Angels sent by God to comfort us ..

  • @linda1802 he's dead cute too

  • @linda1802 I think the same. Thank you for your comment. I feel lucky to hear this!

  • @linda1802 lol...you obviously don't know him. he's no angel. perhaps it's his voice you consider angelic???

  • @CriterionCoIIection You're right! I've never met one german who is an angel ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • I can't believe I'd never noticed how cute he is!

  • To be honest, I don't usually like slow songs, but this one, good Lord, this is so sublime and pure and beautiful and... and... and... well... PERFECT! :)

  • Hmmm, I dunno, fado always seemed to me a bit too, hm, how shall I put it? Like there's some sort of pain hidden behind it. Yes, that's the exact impression it always left on me... If I want slower stuff, I usually opt for more soothing sounds of bossa nova. :) But I will definitely give these songs a try. Thanks for recommending them. As a matter of fact, I do believe that I already have O Pastor somewhere on my PC. :)

  • Hello again!!!

Just a small correction! The music of Madredeus is not Fado. Their style of music has the influence of Fado, as well folk music, classical music, popular music, etc.

Listen carefully and may your heart discover a new peace!

    Try also:

    - Coisas pequenas

    - Vem

    - Destino

    Enjoy it!

    :-D

  • Please, somone help me with the vocal score of this first song!

  • ...and sweetiepie Ruth Elleson is the young lady who comes up and KISSES ANDREAS SCHOLL (!)

  • sublime voice, sublime emotions!!!! a truly angelic singing.

  • Andreas is superb live. I heard him sing the Stabat Mater written especially for his voice in Sydney last year and it was gorgeous beyond words. his encore of Waly, waly made me cry

  • What a beautifull voice, i'm whitout words!

Andreas Scholl, your live performance as incredible, you have a totaly estimate from me and all music lover.

Tank's aeolaus for posting this pearl.

    Ciao,

    D.

  • I'm quite sure its yeats, but then again; not sure, but I remember only his name on the sheet, so i guess its yeats.

  • I wanna cryyyyyyyyyyyyy !!!!1

    I... I... I LOVE HIIIIIIIIIIIIIMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

    THAT WAS... WONDERFUL!

  • bravo maestros; bravo the singer and the guitar!!!

  • stupid

  • john williams has my respect anyway...

  • you're stupid too. Scholl's great.

  • =))))

  • AH....the deaf and dumb people abound.........I bet YOU couldn't draw a CROWD like Andreas does......I could be money NO ONE would even WANT to listen to YOU...you could ONLY sing like this in your DREAMS......hmm..who's the LOSER now?....you're obvously NOT secure in your manhood..so you have to pick on other people to make yourself feel better.......WOW

  • You're an idiot

  • RATS..I accidentally put a thumbs UP to you...you're OBIOUSLY deaf...and retarded

  • A touch of eternity in this wnderful song! I don´t remember if the poem is by Kets or Yeats. THx for posting this!

  • yeats re-wrote it from his memory of a woman singing it in the streets.

the tune is 'the maids of mourne shore', and to my understanding it wasn't put to music until years after its publication.

regardless, the product itself really is magical.

  • It's by Yeats.

  • Yes! Thank you! I have this song by Alfred Deller in his album "Western Wind", beautiful. Scholl is superb, nonetheless! KRegards

  • I really like this poem, and his voice

  • bravissimo!!! maestro de maestros

  • bravo

  • babebibobu *[+_o]* trop beau!

  • cud anyone help me? Plez, give me the exacto name of the songs and author. Thanks

  • Hi rometube, the first song is a poem by W.B.Yeats based on a traditional song he heard someone sing at a fair in Ireland at the end of the 19th century - so i presume the melody is also traditional - John Williams throws in a questionable reference to "an English country garden" in the accompaniment.

  • There are several arrangements of the song. One of the most famous was made by Benjamin Britten for his partner Peter Pears.

  • oooooooh creme de la creme......

  • Oooh, I was there, fantastic night!

  • Excellent, he has an absolutely beautiful voice. Wasn't crazy about that second song though.

  • interesting, these songs are quite low, sounds like he uses head voice in his lower range, not full falsetto, although some notes he passes through.... I think that is why he sounds so manly

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA IT'S TRUE

  • Very emotional and beautiful rendition. Bravi for both - the singer and the guitarist.

  • Wunderschöne Stimme :)

  • wow!

  • what a wonderful blessed voice!

  • who the "f" is alan tichmarsh?

  • can anyone please tell me the name of the second piece he sings? is so sublime. Is it Dutch?

  • It is an extract from Henry Purcell's "King Arthur" called "Fairest Isle", but there is no choir accompaniment in the original version...

  • is that John Williams?

  • Actually the definition of a "counter-tenor" covers any male who sings above the tenor range. Other languages make a distinction; however, English does not.

  • I'm afraid that's not right. Counter-tenor specifically describes a man singing in the Alto range. A man singing in the soprano range is a sopranist. Counter-tenor also implies the use of falsetto technique and/or the head voice. Tenors who can sing higher than the tenor range in his chest voice is called an "haute-contre", or "high-tenor".

Also remember that there are (or used to be) castrati, who were "men" who sang above the tenor register. Scholl is definitely not a castrato though!

  • Wonderful.

  • A countertenor is an adult male who sings in a contralto, mezzo-soprano or (more rarely) soprano range, usually through use of falsetto, or more rarely the normal or modal voice.

When you use your falsetto more and more as I have you develop it over time to where you can project it loud enough where it DOES sound like head voice but it is still in falsetto.

  • I still don't get the falsetto versus head voice. My falsetto is very weak and airy. My head voice is quite strong and it feels different in my throat. I can actually feel the chords tighten up. I'd sure like to figure this out once and for all. I believe I am a counter tenor or a leggiero tenor but the more I read the more confused I get!

  • IN very rare cases men have been recorded in singing in modal/median soprano ranges, inn most cases this is because of a colagen/ elastin, muscle/conective tisse disorder. I have the latter and becuase of this my personal range is soprano up to F5 but not contrallo xD (i wish) on a very good day i can manage the whistle range but i can only do it once b4 my voice gives up and needs time to recouperate! I will have to make a few vids me thinks lol

thanx for clarifying to the ppl!

  • can somebody tell me whats the title and the lyrics of the song .Thank you.

  • Down by the sally gardens+ lyrics

    google is your friend!

  • 0darroch he doesn't sing in a falsetto, he's a countertenor, which means he is able to hit those notes in his head voice, which is very different from a falsetto.

  • Indeed! They have natural high pitched voices. It gets scary when they DO use falsetto ;p

  • No, it IS falsetto (I sing like that too, but I am an alto), its just that some people have a more natural sounding falsetto. We use vibrato, but its still falsetto. I know it sounds different from the other altos in the choir, but its just different, not head tone.

  • Judging by how you use 'alto,' I assume you don't know what you're talking about. It is Not falsetto, it is different resonant spots of his mix, which at some points could be considered falsetto. You're probably too young to know your voice, but the term is Mezzo Soprano, not alto. Alto is the term for a choir placement, which does not always translate to your true voice type.

  • No actually in most cases countertenors do sing in their falcetto when singing as a countertenor, not all the time but most of the time true countertenors are actually baritones that have an amplified falcetto causing them to have that tone!!! and who ever wants to tell people they are wrong wrong can speak with my voice teacher who is training me as a counter tenor and has his doctorate in voice pedagogy and sang at the Met. in New York along side david daniels and speak w/ him!

    david Daniels

  • Does anyone know what the difference is between a Counter Tenor and Falseto is? Andreas Scholl has an incredible voice, and I just love hearing him sing so beautifully!!

  • Haha, the last thing his voice is is natural!! It's stunning though, such clarity and precision, amazing.

  • It is natural, I believe. (isn't he castrated ?)

  • No, certainly not. There's a definite difference between a castrati (a castrated man) and a countertenor, which is what Andreas Scholl is. He has a normal broken voice when he talks but sings in "falsetto" (and could also sing in low register if he wanted), all men can do it, to different extents.

  • he actually sings in a pure head voice, as you can hear him slip into chest voice on the lower notes

  • Wow, what a counter-tenor. His voice is so natural. Truly amazing.

  • it's amazing. i was learning this song one year ago as a tenor, and i will certainly try to sing this piece as a contretenor, which is what i'm learning now

  • You GO, man! Now do me a big favor, send me the words, please, please, please!

  • Omg, his voice is so beautiful and pure, I love this song!!!

  • i hope i can be able to work and fine-tune my contralto and mezzo range so I can possibly sing songs like this. It is weird but not very many men can sing like this.

  • My voice broke just a tad after my 13th birthday in March a few years ago. I'm a low bass now, though I still have a very high falsetto range, however no "high" bass/tenor/alto'ic range whatsoever.

  • ... just wonderfull ! ...

  • I'm a 13 year old counter-tenor or boy soprano or treble, etc. I've started to notice my voice breaking. No wonder: my range until now has been A - d'''. I hope I still get to be able to sing this in a few years time...

  • My voice cracked down during puberty... I'm a high baritone now but i kept my high falsetto range. So I'm lucky I guess :)

  • You can always SING. As to what register you'll have __ another story. Get a good teacher,(or keep the one you have, if you do). Don't take chances with your vocal cords. How important to you is your singing; think about that.

  • Molto bravo, bellissima voce. Complimenti!

  • Great to see him at the proms but Fairest Isle sounded a bit ligubrious. Perhaps it needs a smaller venue, a smaller ensemble and a bit more tempo...

  • Pretty good. I like it.

  • aolaus, thank you so much for posting this. I only discovered Andreas Scholl today! He's a spectacular counter tenor. IMO, they just keep getting better and better. Alfred Deller was very good, but his son Mark exceeded him, and the guys singing today are FABulous.

  • Very beautiful! If any countertenors read this comment-- could anyone tell me more about it? What makes a young tenor or baritone decide to sing countertenor, is studying as a countertenor very different from studying as a another voice type and what kind of things determine the repertoire of a countertenor? I'm a female voice student, but we don't have any countertenors at my university so I don't really know anything about it at all...

  • Rather excessive applause. Yet such is our vulgar age, which sees restraint as a vice rather than a virtue.

  • tell me where you see restraint...

  • He's got a gorgeous instrument there. But to my mind, the performance is all about "haven't I got a gorgeous voice?" rather than about the music or, heaven forbid, the text.

Lovely voice - I just wish he'd do something with it other than make pretty sounds.

  • Perhaps you should get acquainted with his other works before making such a bold statement.

  • If you listen to some of his other recordings, especially his Handel works, you will find some sublime music..

  • Well, surprise: I'm also German and my English is pretty good. Not every German has got a terrible accent, that's really kind of cookiecutter- thinking.

Great voice and thanx for uploading this great vid, by the way.

  • great

  • His English is so spectacularly good that it is hard to remember that he is German!

  • Comment removed

  • I love these types of christian music, even though i'm not a christian

  • I wouldn't consider the English folk song "Sally Gardens" or the aria from Henry Purcell "King Arthur" Christian music. Purcell wrote cantatas on religious texts as well as secular. You will probably find that sacred and secular works by the same composer are in the same musical language. I also adore British folk music as well as Purcell vocal music.

  • I didn't consider the folksong 'The Salley Gardens' and Englsih folsong, but there you have it!

  • I was going on "Down by the Salley Gardens" being arranged by Britten and his anthology of Folksong Arrangements of the British Isles.

  • Upon looking at the Britten score, I see that the text is a Yates poem and the melody is Irish. You're right, it's not a folksong.

  • It's a folk song from the West of ireland. WB Yeats just wrote the words down in an early collection of poems. That's just how it goes with folk music - getting passed down orally until someone decides to commit it to paper.

  • Fabuloso! It's such a nice surprise to hear Scholl accommpanied by maestro John Williams. Fantastic playing and an extraordinary voice.

  • the most beautiful voice of counter tenor I've ever hear

  • I love this bloke.Amazing voice.I want to have his children.

  • ti adoro andrea scholl

  • Wow he is so amazing and I can't belive how high his voice can go!

  • excellent! thank you

  • that is not head voice, that is pure falsetto. Just very very good. In general most countertenors sound like they are using a different form of voice production, because they aren't as good
