  • if it helps Uchi Uke and Soto Uke are both iside and outside block, the problem is the interpretation of the Japanese.

    Depending on the style you learn depends on their view point Wado for instance views an inside block coming from the outside in so therefore Uchi Uke. In Shoto they consider the fact that it comes from outside to be the most important part so therefore Soto Uke. If that makes any sence?

  • Uke = block..

    Uchi = Punch..

    Right ?

  • @guptaaks007 thanks for your comment. Uchi means inner (the inside; the interior; house; within; between) and Uke means block (or receive). I hope this helps, Alex

  • @SenseiAlexBuxton Ya right..ok..

    Thanks for sharing the information.. :)

  • and the second one is a soto uke. you got your japanese mixed up

  • @thederegulator thanks for your comments! It is my understanding that the names of these blocks depend on the style of karate you practice. When I was learning Shotokan, the blocks were named the way you are describing. However, these videos are based on Wado Ryu where the blocks are named the other way round! All the best, Alex.

  • He is actually using an uchi uke to block, soto uke is an outside block
