Barbara Wagner is my Mother and deserved to have medication that could save her life, but because of Oregons new Law I have seen first hand how our Elderly are being treated and God help you if you don't have insurance and are on OHP!! This isn't a debate about weather someone who smoked for most of her life has the same right as someone who has lived a so called PERFECT LIFE..its about everyone of us who might not have insurance you to could be expendable. If your Terminal you can't have meds?
The drug cost $4000/month. Oregon could save many other lives using that money. Moreover, as a life-long smoker, Wagner was responsible for her own condition. This is relevant when it comes to allocation of scarce resources. If you could give a liver to one of two patients, and one patient was an alcoholic who had spent her life destroying her own liver, I think you should give the liver to the other patient. Similar story here. Finally, merely having the OPTION of euthanasia wasn't bad for her
@tlcambell I just wanted to comment on your comment about my Mother Barbara Wagner...She was an awesome Mother even better Grandma who was loved my all of us!! I can't be your self centered comment. My Mother would have been the first to tell you she wasen't perfect..however she deserved to live just like everyone else does and just because she was in a situation where she didnt have Health Insurance. How would you like to be in that situation?? or one of your loved ones who just lost a job?
@1263Buttercup I would be insensitive if I responded before saying that I am very sorry for your loss. My grandfather died of liver disease so I know how it feels to lose a loved one to some horrible disease. When I say she was responsible for her own condition that does not mean I think she deserved to die. It only means that responsibility should be a factor when we're deciding how to distribute scarce resources. The state had already spent thousands of dollars on your mother.

They haven't taken over it, be glad now that private health companies have more control :)
