I saw a documentary where Eric Hall said Freddie had told him that he was killer queen. Eric Hall has a bit of a reputation in the U.K. for his day's as an agent for footballer's. Say no more!!!!!
@MsSweetunes I think it's Eric Hall, he was a publicist for EMI in the early seventies, anyway Freddie had short hair by the time Iron Maiden hit the scene.
@fathertoson1974 I think Freddie had a relationship with Eric Hall from the information on a documentary I watched about Freddie. I looked up Eric's pics on the internet and he definitely looks different, with a brush cut and dark hair.
Freddie....since you left "the seasons are dry and the rain stopped falling." There's no living in this life anymore with your beautiful voice in the world! You are truly missed by all your fans! Love you Forever Freddie!
I love Freddie's fondness of daffodils, their my birth-flower....for March....It almost makes me want to cry everytime I see pictures of him with daffodils
Amazing. I prefer this slightly rockier version to the one on the album. What a vocal performance. Apparently, he didn't rate his own piano playing but I would like to see some of the muppets on those talent(less) shows you get on TV nowadays put on a vocal and instrumental display like this.
@Gregsynthbootlegs Okay guys, I know nothing about C5, D5, E5, F5 or an F16. Oh wait an F16 is a fighter jet. All I know is that Freddie sang from A1-Z10, low range, high range and everything in between.
Freddie wrote some beautiful words & melodies too.
Because his lower and middle ranges became more powerful and richer-sounding: Plus if you add the smoking and other factors, that can change your timbre up also!
Also, give a good listen to some of his stuff from 1987-1991: He did songs like Scandal, The Show Must Go On, and some of his Barcelona stuff in one take!
yea, but remenber from Barcelona, the song Ensuendo (or whatever its called lol)
Moserat Caballe asked freddie to sing in his natural baritone voice, and in this song, and for eksampel in "im going slightly mad" he sounds very baritonal..
Not denying that at all! It is true that Freddie had a baritone-speaking voice, and unlike most tenors, his lower range was more developed. It is true that on Ensueno, that Caballe told Freddie to sing in his natural baritone. There's a few other songs that have Freddie singing "baritone" (Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Slightly Mad, parts of the Barcelona album, etc). But, if Freddie was a baritone, he wouldn't be singing those ball-busting high notes on 90% of the other songs!
yea i agree that his lower notes sounded abit forced during the 70's, and i guess he would be classified as tenor at the time, and (i think9 developed into a baritone during the 80's, anyway about the high notes, are not "that" high, (C5-D5, occasional E5's, and the single head-voiced F5) plus they sound quite forced, exept for the more headvoiced notes, thats why i think he is a baritone (high-baritone)
Well, I did exaggerate the high notes a bit (Ball-busting-lol), but I wanted to say that, he's sung in that higher range for so LONG that it pushes me to tenor. If he was an actual baritone singing in that register, I think he would have LOST his voice a long time ago! lol
The reason why his higher range sounded forced at times, was because Freddie was using a TON of chest voice on those high notes. Most of his high notes between 1984-1986 were reached by belting/shouting.
haha i love debates too :p But i think one of the reasons that freddie didn't loose his voice was that the high notes are only occasional, i mean that most on the melody lines didn't go higher than around Ab4, while most higher note was occasional "climax" notes
plus he often didn't sing those higher notes live (ok maybe because of nodes) but also before he developed nodes i did often avoid notes higher that around A4
Yeah, I got plenty of the pre-nodule bootlegs (wink wink) from 1973/4. There is evidence of him changing the notes then. But most of the notes he did change were falsetto notes (you know Freddie and his "macho-ness"). On the some of the 1973 bootlegs, he did replicate some of his songs (note-wise), and he even got the B4 on Liar during a live 1973 concert!
@StratAppleYou guys are Amazing!! Next to you, I'm a mere embryo in Freddie/ Queen fandom! LOL
I love your 'debates'! It's like taking a course in FREDDIE MERCURY 101- Hey, that's not a bad idea! He has enough diverse material to contemplate for ages!
Little correction: Freddie IS the greatest singer Ever!!! And, personally, I like the cracks (Love Of My Life, Wembley). I love anything & ev Freddie does, whatever octave, whatever style. His voice is so awesomely gorgeous & pleasing! THE BEST!!!
Yeah, I can argue that the melody lines in Queen's songs aren't all that high, overall (Mostly topping off in the higher 4th octave)--sometimes going into the 5th octave. But if you look at the 1980s stuff, Freddie's starting to CONSTANTLY sing in that higher 4th octave/lower 5th octave range (example: A Kind Of Magic). He had the nodules already, so that makes it even more impressive (though it did cost him clarity and sweetness).
Lets get some answers: Freddie is a tenor, but he's not a leggerio one. He started off as a lyric tenor, but as he aged, he matured into a lower tenor (developing a very rich and powerful middle range, and developed his lower range as well).
Leggerio tenors are VERY high voices (Robert Plant, Geddy Lee, Jon Anderson) that sing well into the 5th octave (F5 and up). Although Freddie has sung a full-voiced F5, he's not an F5 belter. His highest common notes are C5s-D5s.
@StratApple. Freddie is a Leggiero tenor. What happened was after years of straining, and smoking Freddie developed vocal nodules. Leggiero tenors can choose weather they want to be a baritone or tenor because their lower voice is much more thick and baritonal than a normal tenor. How I know is because I'm also a Leggiero tenor and some days I'm baritonal to the point where I can't sing high.
Both you and freddie are wrong. Listen to their older stuff.(first two albums). He sang high, very high
@Boganator4 I can see your point, and actually im also a leggiero tenor, and yes some days, or even just for an hour or so i also have a more baritonal voice, but i must say that im sure freddie used falsetto, just can hear how his voice cracks, and how weaker his "falsetto" or high notes sound.. im quite sure
@StratApple. When this was recorded he still was find his voice. So when he uses the extension it sounds thin and exactly like falsetto, but this was when his first album was made.
You need to listen to the Sheer Heart attack album. That's when his voice was perfect. Brighton rock for an example. Most of that whole entire song was him using the extension. Check out love of my life also, that's another example of him using the extension.
You'll be surprised with what you hear. He's a Leggiero.
@StratApple. Actually man, I've listened to this again and Freddie is not using falsetto, but a lighter version of the Leggiero extension at this time it wasn't too full because he was still young.
@Boganator4 You might be right, but i think that he never developed his higher extension truly, because as you said earlier, because of vocal nodes and lack of training the never fully reached his higher extension..
@Boganator4 Does it really matter what type of voice Freddie had, I mean really, does it?....what matters is tht Freddie was an exceptional singer, with no formal training, he taught himself to sing and done a damn good job of it, his finest vocal work is deffo on Queen II & S.H.A....Freddie was and still is regarded as one of the best singers in the world, hence y not many ppl can cover a Queen song without changin the key. Freddie rules....Queen Rule
Queen II was my first Queen album that shocked me completely and made me a Queen true fan. And Nevermore it's the most beautiful song of 'em. It's so sad it's so short but it's a masterpiece!
Upon hearing this, I wonder how I've missed it previously. I also must say that I perhaps may have a new favorite from Queen. Freddie's voice is purely magical, sounding like snow falling upon a quiet field.
Queen will always rule, and Freddie Mercury will always reign.
@ralphiepdiddles THAT WAS A GREAT THING TO SAY,I KNOW FREDDIE WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HEAR THAT,LOOK AT MY PROFILE IM WITH PAUL QUEENS MANAGER,WITH THEM ALL 3 MONTHS BEFORE FREDDIE LEFT.BE WELL
@ralphiepdiddles Dude that was a PERFECT description ! i never thought of it that way(i am a musician) "snow falling on a quiet field" is brilliant in its tie to the pause , reflection, sorrow and plead he seems to be sending out. I really miss that voice, the humor and the 4 of them Rockin you off the ground!!!!! the scope of their music-from the tension of Ogre Battle to the release of Nevermore(in one album!!!) I am in AWE and dunno if i wand to throw my stuff into a bonfire or be gung-ho!
was cool until the end because the whole coolness of the original was the ending notes. 4 3 1111111 4 3 33333333. This time, he sings 1 7 66666666 1 5 5555555. Probably the harmony to the original but the original is cooler.
The "Masterstroke" as well as any version of "Nevermore" (I like this one almost as well) are both masterstrokes. Along with "March of the Black Queen" this was one of Fredie's most sublime moments - and that says quite a lot!
THe whole album, really, its amazing, but there arent really any mainstream popular songs off of it. You're never going to hear it on the radio, sadly. Its such an overlooked piece of brilliance
WOW! Been a fan of Queen since about 74 and never come across this although heard many other demos n stuff. Album version def. better though,of course, much more polished and bettr mixed. Interesting to hear the drum coming in on 57' and the lack of falsetto on Freddie's final 'Nevermores' on this demo.
Of course it's Freddie.:) As I know it was recorded in december 1973 in BBC's Langham studios. This session was released in 1989 titled as "Queen at the Beeb", but without this track. This song debuted on Queen II (in 1974) but in different form.
"BBC Langham Studio version of Nevermore recorded on April 3rd 1974 at Langham 1 Studios in London and broadcast on Radio 1 on April 15th 1974." /DaveRFuller/
omg omg that just remind me that it was the only band I 've listened to from my 12 yrs to my 20's ,so that has been my whole life soundtrack.... still in my heart...

But who sings this? It sounds just like Freddie!!
And what is there a "BBC" in the title?
HorseMan50 3 years ago
Of course it's Freddie.:) As I know it was recorded in december 1973 in BBC's Langham studios. This session was released in 1989 titled as "Queen at the Beeb", but without this track. This song debuted on Queen II (in 1974) but in different form.

I was wrong.
"BBC Langham Studio version of Nevermore recorded on April 3rd 1974 at Langham 1 Studios in London and broadcast on Radio 1 on April 15th 1974." /DaveRFuller/
