Aside from the most amazing dance ever seen on ice, it is dubious why Pasha and Evgenyi supproted the obvious plagiarism of Nyman (cold song in Purcell's King Arthur opera 1691). That said... Purcell's music is amazing and Grishuk/Platov's dance is the best ever. I really wonder how they'd do in the current format of the ice dancing.
I love Tracy Wilson - the announcer - (though even a decade later she didn't seem to learn the lesson) but she was so wrong here. They weren't polished? Seriousy? This is the very definition of polished - a staggeringly intense performance that to this day is one of ice dancing's masterpieces. You don't want to take a breath because you think it might shatter the mood.
@Proustable Oh yes, she called it wrong here for sure... a great program, even if (don't hate me for saying this) it reminds me of Torvill and Dean's Bolero (the music, costume colour, single theme etc).
Просто нет слов...Танец не отпускает ни на секунду, даже дышать во время проката невозможно. Смотреть можно бесконечно, каждый раз потрясает. Невероятной силы произведение!
Pasha Grishuk and Platov perfomance in 1998 is THE best in the history of Olympics (In my opinion)
I am fascinated by the edge work and emotional connection they established with the audience. They say skaters like these are one out of a hundred thousand
eltarm, I have to totally agree with you on moron Tracy Wilson. The first time I saw this performance, I said, who is this idiot announcer. She absolutely ruins the end. Fortunately the wonderful music partially drowns her inane comments out. I wish there was a way to edit this video and erase all her comments. Sadly, they keep using her in subsequent Olympics. There has got to be someone else out there than this third-rate skater for commentary. Someone who has actually accomplished more
Somehow Oksana Grishuk reminds me of Oksana Baiul. Same first name, same blonde hair and the same passion and technical prowess that belies the same slight and slender frame.
This is one of the greatest performances of all time. I love America, but the CBS lady announcer is total loser. Sometimes, we americans can not be gracious losers. I wateched this live, and even as an amateur eye, no other duo came even close to this performance. They blew everybody out of the water. There were also accusations of score fixing amongst the judges. Again, it does not matter, the performance speaks for itself. Simply beautiful!
I'm not even a big ice dancing fan but I STILL remember seeing this on TV. I just looked it up because I saw the ice dancing in this Olympics and it's not even on the same level as this 12 years later.
@ttouran The CBS lady here (Tracy Wilson) is actually Canadian, not American. I think the score fixing accusations were actually for the Compulsary Dance (Grishuk and Platov made a slight error but still beat a number of teams who skated clean), not the Free Dance. Nobody could deny this particular performance rates amongst the very best, and was probably the highlight of their career, IMO.
@ttouran The woman is Tracy Wilson of Canada. She won an ice dancing bronze medal in the 1988 Olympics with Rob McCall. Normally I really like her commentary, but here she was very biased--don't know if that was because CBS wanted her play up the judging controversy or if she really wanted to promote Bourne and Kraatz.
I cried too.......OMG!!!! Thanks a lot for this video. And Tarasova is genious!!!! o love her very much, I'm proud to be russian because of people like her, so strong but at the same time so emotional and deep.
@lturbina I am British but I think most fans of figure skating love and respect Ms Tarasova as being the greatest coach/trainer of all time. She is an amazing woman, no doubt about it. Greetings love and peace from London UK
AllI can say is thay Mike Nyman is a GREAT composer and they really managed to convey this fantastic music. The winners are never judged - thsi is a Roman saying So, do not judge them: they really deserved this vixcory and they will remain the ONLY two times Olympic Champions in Ice dancing
they are... so perfect... this music.. it comes into you heart... when you look at it and you cannot take you eyes from this perfomance... do you feel the same?

Those who decided worked their butts of with the understanding they were granted this opportunity, and deserve fair treatment from judges and officials just like everyone else.
You can't judge someone based on the fact that they've been allowed back! You have to judge based on the skating that you see. If you don't like the fact that they were able to come back, take it up with the ISU - don't blame the skaters. The ISU just wanted more TV ratings are more money. The skaters came back because they wanted to compete again.
You can't mark someone down just because you don't like the fact that they are there. Your unfair bias shows all that's wrong with figure skating.
It appears many judges of those Olympics felt like I did. For example take Boitano and Petrenko's deductions in the short. Their marks would still be pretty low and much lower then Stojko and Urmanov. Witt didnt deserve a medal with her lack of jump content but was scored on the stingy side. You already mentioned Torvill/Dean. In the pairs the 2 russians pros were so much better then others they had no choice. Other then that I think alot of the judges were against the pros just like I was.
We are so Glad that Oksana and Evgeny was recognized by the World best professional judges and was placed FIRST at the Olympic Games twice. The are marvelous skaters and beautiful people. BRAVO !!!
the best ice dance pair, the best free dance ever. they deserved it this gold medal and the 94 gold medal, and all the gold medal they win. i love this pair.
As much as a loved Bourne & Kraatz, I feel that B & K's OD and FD were nowhere near the same league as the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal winners. G & P won this performance hands-down, and I'm sorry that Pascha and Evgeny had to defend themselves just because the Canadians complained.
They were amazing in 97 and 98, but before that I found them dull and not the best. But I take my hat off to them for listening to their critics and improving to the amazing standard they showed us here.
I am so happy I found this video today. I do remember it in TV... 10 years ago. I felt frisson that time. I feel frisson now. I have never seen better performance. Amazing!!! I honestly adore them.
I don't think they were necessarily hated-perhaps disliked for beating out both Torvill & Dean and Grishuk's hated rival Maia Usova and her ex-husband Zhulin. I think Grishuk's behaviour with him off the ice did not help towards popularity points-but I believe with their performances in the late '90's they showed they were deserving champions. I love this routine-it's my favorite of theirs-and I also lie their "Feeling Begins" number though I like Oksana Baiul's interpretation best.
I still don't understand why they were so hated, especially Grishuk. Tracy Nelson never had anything good to say about them. I think that the were more hated in the skating community than Tonya Harding, and that's saying a lot.
Tracy Nelson's problem was partly that the Canadian Pair could not get onto the Olympic podium with these two in the House-and also she probably dislikes Grishuk in a personal level due to her 'homewrecker' reputation. Jmo
this performance is as brilliant and devastating today as it was 10 years ago. such a shame the inane commentary detracts fom this video (as it did that night).
I agree with the person who posted this that it was a bit laughable to say that this performance was beatable ,however, these two the greatest of all time?? In 97 and 98 they were indeed great but prior to that very forgettable. Thanks for posting this though, a great memory, but it was better at the euros in Milano.
The passion that went into this one is undeniable. Pasha is so strong yet so dramatic. The athleticism is never too much and is an integral part of the story they are telling. I'm riveted by it, the costumes and the score (music.) I don't think we'll see anything that emotional again.
Does anyone know where one can get THIS piece of music? It sounds different than the original Michael Nyman "Memorial" piece. I like this version so much beter - I am asuming this is a newer version.
This version was remixed by the musicians who were friends of the trainer (Tatiana Tarasova). She mentioned she had to remix the melody and shorten it for the performance... I don't think it is available anywhere.
so...Zhulin-Usova, Awerbukh-Lobaczeva Anissina-Peizerat ...they was, they are a great dancers...but Grishuk-Platov are the best figure dancers in ice history.and this permormance is perfect on every kind -emotional, artistic and technical...Brilliant memorial
From 1988 till the end of eligible carrier 1998, Pasha never lost any of competition, received a record number in history of the highest marks - 6.0 in the period from 1994 to 1998 and setting new standards for artistic beauty and technical in ice dancing. Pasha has won a record of Gold Medals (total 26), become the only Lady in sport history to receive Olympic Gold Medals Two Times one after other in 1994 and the other in 1998! She is in the Guinness Book with that success. And I love her :)
Does anyone remember that fluff piece on Oksana/Pasha Grishuk on that Cutting Edge show on TBS during the Nagano Olympics? She was acting sooooo strange because she made some kind of comment like, "Who Oksana??***rolls eyes side to side*** and then whispers,"I don't know...." and then she walked off. So odd that one, but she was a damn good ice dancer.
Scott Hamilton said:"...Tracy, this is the best dance team in the world". Tracy replied:"Technically they are excellent, I can't question their speed, the use of the running edge. I don't think they have shown up here polish, I've seen their unision better, I believe they are beatable" The reason she said so because eversince winning the Olympic Gold in 1994, Grishuk & Platov have been winning every major competitions, including 4 World Championships back to back.
This is what ice dancing is meant to be! Not the crap that the new judging system has been fostering with all of its ugliness and awkwardness. Grishuk and Platov are the epitome of ice dancing (just like Gordeeva and Grinkov were the epitome of Pairs). Honestly, skating is just not what it used to be. I miss seeing innovativeness like this!
And I kept thinking the commentator was saying "they are unbeatable", just didn't pronounce it clear enough. Because unbeatable is the more realistic word. Remember they had been put at the top before the free dance despite they had some error in the CD. It's hard to think they'd fail at last with such powerful performance.
One of the greatest Olympic performances. Most skaters get the nerves and don't perform as good as they can do in other competitions, but here Grishuk and Platov still gave their top performance at the Olympics.
When Tracy Wilson says they are beatable she was keeping in mind the strong performances of French Duo Anissina and Peizerat (who should have won silver, not bronze) and Russian Duo Krylova & Ovsyannikov. I dont think it was jealousy more so being fair and realistic. If you dont think so take a look at Anissina & Peizerat's 2000 World Championship Performance in Nice, France and their 2002 Olympic Performance in Salt Lake City.
I beg to differ! I'm NOT a wilson fan, but I've seen them skate 'Memorial' better and even with a fall on Platovs part earlier in the season, but I definitely don't think they were ever beatable after 1995...just not as clean as they can be. The Olympics can surface anyones nerves, even the greats. We should however keep in mind that for a few years Platov has had really bad knees.
This ice dance is perfection. To this day I still hold this up as an example of what ice-skating should look like. So few ice-skaters can ever hold a candle to these two. The thing that makes this routine work apart from their skating in unison, is the fact that you can see the emotion in their movement....they literally skate what the music is emoting. So beautiful! *sigh*
Непревзойденная техника Грищук,мастерство Платова и гений Тарасовой! Это - шедевр ! Бесконечно можно смотреть и восхищаться талантом этих людей.!

Oksana and Evgeny GENIUS!!!!!!!!!
happyfaceskater 3 years ago
Magnificent Performance!!! Oksana and Evgeny unbeatable! The only team in the history of ice dancing to win Two Olympic Gold medals.
happyfaceskater 3 years ago
As much as a loved Bourne & Kraatz, I feel that B & K's OD and FD were nowhere near the same league as the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medal winners. G & P won this performance hands-down, and I'm sorry that Pascha and Evgeny had to defend themselves just because the Canadians complained.

I love this. Thanks for posting it! They were the best! I acquired a kitten shortly after this and named her Pasha. lol

Forgot to add-Scott Hamilton's drippy-drama queen commentary setting up Tracy's is even MORE annoying if that's possible. It's embarassing.
audie83 3 years ago
Tracy's commentary truly IS annoying. How lame-anyone can see this performance is one for the books.

This is my favorite Grischuk and Platov routine!
No one deserves to have what was done to Pasha/Oksana recently. Get well soon-and I hope they catch whoever did it!
audie83 3 years ago
I like this very much too & just adore their performance. i like their coach too. she is really great & like a legend.
but what had happened to Oksana recently? can u reply pls

I think I know why they were so hated...they beat Torvill & Dean at the 1994 Winter Olympics. And Torvill & Dean are the most loved team in world.
koollatter 4 years ago 2
I don't think they were necessarily hated-perhaps disliked for beating out both Torvill & Dean and Grishuk's hated rival Maia Usova and her ex-husband Zhulin. I think Grishuk's behaviour with him off the ice did not help towards popularity points-but I believe with their performances in the late '90's they showed they were deserving champions. I love this routine-it's my favorite of theirs-and I also lie their "Feeling Begins" number though I like Oksana Baiul's interpretation best.
audie83 3 years ago
I still don't understand why they were so hated, especially Grishuk. Tracy Nelson never had anything good to say about them. I think that the were more hated in the skating community than Tonya Harding, and that's saying a lot.
koollatter 4 years ago
Tracy Nelson's problem was partly that the Canadian Pair could not get onto the Olympic podium with these two in the House-and also she probably dislikes Grishuk in a personal level due to her 'homewrecker' reputation. Jmo

i video taped this in 1998, and its just the best. well the aussie commentators think they were "unbeatable" :)

this performance is as brilliant and devastating today as it was 10 years ago. such a shame the inane commentary detracts fom this video (as it did that night).
baadpuddytat 4 years ago 4
I agree with the person who posted this that it was a bit laughable to say that this performance was beatable ,however, these two the greatest of all time?? In 97 and 98 they were indeed great but prior to that very forgettable. Thanks for posting this though, a great memory, but it was better at the euros in Milano.

Which story do they tell?

The passion that went into this one is undeniable. Pasha is so strong yet so dramatic. The athleticism is never too much and is an integral part of the story they are telling. I'm riveted by it, the costumes and the score (music.) I don't think we'll see anything that emotional again.
mdowhy 4 years ago 2
What are they calling this a memorial? I hope nothing happened to these wonderful ice skaters?
The precision here is unbelievable! Such grace and talent! They move as one SOUL!
joeocho88 4 years ago
The music is called "Memorial" :)
qwertybnm 4 years ago
Does anyone know where one can get THIS piece of music? It sounds different than the original Michael Nyman "Memorial" piece. I like this version so much beter - I am asuming this is a newer version.
gusboysf 4 years ago

And I love her :)
timucin73 4 years ago
'I've don't think they;ve shonwn up here polish. I've seen their unison better. I believe they are beatable'
Come on guys, don't tell me that's not what you hear.
They deserved 1998 Gold, but definately not in 1994; T&D were much better.
buschmann1 4 years ago
Does anyone remember that fluff piece on Oksana/Pasha Grishuk on that Cutting Edge show on TBS during the Nagano Olympics? She was acting sooooo strange because she made some kind of comment like, "Who Oksana??***rolls eyes side to side*** and then whispers,"I don't know...." and then she walked off. So odd that one, but she was a damn good ice dancer.

Scott Hamilton said:"...Tracy, this is the best dance team in the world". Tracy replied:"Technically they are excellent, I can't question their speed, the use of the running edge. I don't think they have shown up here polish, I've seen their unision better, I believe they are beatable" The reason she said so because eversince winning the Olympic Gold in 1994, Grishuk & Platov have been winning every major competitions, including 4 World Championships back to back.
leoninsf 4 years ago
i have always adored their style ,but the brits kept them form the top .These are my numbers 2 fav afteer t and d!
skaterlz 4 years ago
This is what ice dancing is meant to be! Not the crap that the new judging system has been fostering with all of its ugliness and awkwardness. Grishuk and Platov are the epitome of ice dancing (just like Gordeeva and Grinkov were the epitome of Pairs). Honestly, skating is just not what it used to be. I miss seeing innovativeness like this!

wow, really good. What is the theme of this freedance? it reminds be a lot of torvill and dean's bolero.

Michael Nyman - Memorial Requiem
pagurenu 4 years ago
And I kept thinking the commentator was saying "they are unbeatable", just didn't pronounce it clear enough. Because unbeatable is the more realistic word. Remember they had been put at the top before the free dance despite they had some error in the CD. It's hard to think they'd fail at last with such powerful performance.
yajunwindbell 4 years ago 3
One of the greatest Olympic performances. Most skaters get the nerves and don't perform as good as they can do in other competitions, but here Grishuk and Platov still gave their top performance at the Olympics.
yajunwindbell 4 years ago 3
When Tracy Wilson says they are beatable she was keeping in mind the strong performances of French Duo Anissina and Peizerat (who should have won silver, not bronze) and Russian Duo Krylova & Ovsyannikov. I dont think it was jealousy more so being fair and realistic. If you dont think so take a look at Anissina & Peizerat's 2000 World Championship Performance in Nice, France and their 2002 Olympic Performance in Salt Lake City.
randymodels24 4 years ago
I beg to differ! I'm NOT a wilson fan, but I've seen them skate 'Memorial' better and even with a fall on Platovs part earlier in the season, but I definitely don't think they were ever beatable after 1995...just not as clean as they can be. The Olympics can surface anyones nerves, even the greats. We should however keep in mind that for a few years Platov has had really bad knees.

one of the greatest ice dance i've ever seen!!!!!they are champions!!!!
michikosciuk 4 years ago 3
This ice dance is perfection. To this day I still hold this up as an example of what ice-skating should look like. So few ice-skaters can ever hold a candle to these two. The thing that makes this routine work apart from their skating in unison, is the fact that you can see the emotion in their movement....they literally skate what the music is emoting. So beautiful! *sigh*
