Listening to this again after Al Jr commented on my previous comment......god dont you just want to give them all a HUGE hug ! I feel embarrassed to have assumed they wouldn't be with us now.....Al....here's a huge hug and heartfelt thanks for touching our hearts with this fine song x
@altonhandfield. Al thank you so much for your reply. Every time I watch this I get goosebumps. Very sad to hear that two have died, makes it all the more poignant. You must be so proud of your dad : ) When was this video of them made ? The second I hear the first note, I just have to stop and listen. Tell your dad he has one excellent voice and a first class performer. All the best Tj x
I do remember hearing this. I always liked this one a lot. It really is a great song and it takes me way back to late elementary school. I listened to the radio every night; we had a program called "Night Train" and it played rock 'n roll. I loved this one a lot for certan. What a great job they are doing on this live version. That says a lot because normally the studio version is best. Kudos to their talen. Thank you for this post.
I taught my dadughters this song when they were babies. They still remember all the words and have taught their children the words too. I guess this is our family's favorite......
@SuperJester94 That's because he's not Shep. Shep died and left the group in the hands of the lead singer in this video Al Handfield, my father! the reason he looks too young is our family line has a unique genetic trait of looking at least 10-20 yrs younger than our actual age! It happens to one child per family. I picked up this trait from him. He was around the same age as Shep!
Always try to find a song it goes like "Sha hoo ba boo whoo,whoo,whoo".. I can't find it anywhere, and back up singers are in complete harmony with one another
I listened to this song, along with You're A Thousand Miles Away, while my dad was away in the Vietnam War... I still listen to these records... I thank God that I still get to spend time with my dad...
When my Son was a toddler I used to play this for him..hoping his Dad would come home safe from his Law Enforcement job..Now my Son choose the same profession..Now I play it for his children..
@dolittle1949 how fortunate this has become a family song for you and your children..this song will last forever!keep on playing it for them.God Bless!
this song sends shivers down my spine its amazing that they can still sing as wonderful as they used too lets see wiz khalifa or lil wayne sing like that
@EveryoneCallsMeChris Few today understand why it's better to close your eyes on a song like this. They think your weird. It will take you where ever your mind wants you to go with the music...FANTASTIC music this is
very well done by the limelites considering that they are re mostly sr. citizens already? how would u compare it with jermaine jackson n d jackson 5's version?
I grew up listening to the oldies. This song brings back memories of my childhood. I remember as a child listening to this song when my daddy was overseas. My mama, my best friend, would write him about how i cried for him everyday. I am definitely a daddy's girl. I would pretend he was singing this song for me.
Butt naked in the kitchen, fixing breakfast then turned around with the breakfast tray...You know this scene? well it's the scene from 'Baby Boy' so you should! I wouldn't know this song if it wasn't for the movie 'Baby Boy'.
What a fantastic song..... I was looking for the Cliff Richard version...but he said this version was better.....so I uploaded this version instead...and have to say it brought a lump to my throat.....sad to think those guys arent with us anymore, but their melodies live on x
I sing this song 2 my two daughters whenever i go visit them. They start laughing at me like i'm a fool when i sing it but when i keep singing, they start singing with me. :-)
@therealraybaby and they'll remember those times later on when their all grown up and your gone...keep making those great memories for yourself and for them.
Now this is what music is all about. One of the many greats from the past. I would love to see a doo-wop show in person and give groups like this standing ovations.
Now you really didn't I'd forget you Dad's...so many had to work long hrs, 2 jobs and jobs away from home to provide for their family...I know you had to endure moments of longing to be closer to your family. Love and much respect to you. This was one the most loved songs by me.
bEAUTIFUL...I LOVE IT....COULD SOME ONE TELL ME WHO THE YOUNG SINGER IS PLZE!!!!! Hes has a beautiful voice & i love the way he sings, i know hes a nephew to James Sheppard....i love the harmoniers in the back ground doing all the rat-a-tat & shoo-wops...who are they & wher are they all from?????? thank you guy'z for your beautiful music...love you...xxxx
I believe this was the original bass singer of the Heartbeats(Shep`s first group) singing with the limelites here.Shep was murdered on the Belt parkway in New York, in the late 1960`s.
Erik,Shep had a totally different group:The four other Heartbeats did not become Limelites.Actually, two survivng members of the Videos("Trickle,Trickle") joined Shep as the Limelites. They had no bass singer as Shep and the Limelites but the original bass singer of the Heartbeats is one of two surviving Heartbeats that sometime will appear with the new Limelite group.
@thebigfist Can you tell me about what happend to Shep,? I am from Brooklyn & don't remember reading about his murder, so what can you tell us about it ? Intreasting fact about him he had a marvolous voice I remember the hit 1,000 miles away with the Heartbeats.
@MyREDTAIL I don`t know the details but it may have been a road rage type incident.Shep had a bad alcohol problem. He was great guy but became very surly when under the influence, which purportedly is why the Heartbeats broke up.
I love every minute of this classic. Wish i was lucky enough to have attended any concert. I'll take this (MY) type of music any day over the nonsense that they call music today.

I was only born in 1983, but I I can transport myself to the 50's crusing in a Bel-Air on a hot summer night listening to this on the radio. Maybe I was born in the wrong time- I respect a time back when people actually had to have talent to be famous. Not just a self-centered attitude, a pair of stupid sunglasses and an over-used autotune and vocoder used to make the garbage they push through the radio these days-seems like we're going backwards.
once again this historian on doo wop and rocknroll can tell you, DADDYS HOME is way way up there. An American classic. These guys are angels fro Heaven . this song like a prescious few will endure into ternity. what a song what a tune, . Its a trip back into a gentler time. god bless this song and the men Limelights . TOMK
