"2001: A Space Odyssey" by Kubrick and "Solaris" by Tarkovsky were, are, and always will be the two very best films made by humans about two living creatures we humans will never understand completely - about Space and Universe. Anything else is just anything else - unimportant and not worth paying attention to.
Well, the infamous Mr.Plinkett aka RedLetterMedia agrees with Lucas being a businessman first and a "film-maker" second, then he proceeds to rip the Star Wars movies to shreds in his review.
There was some sci-fi writer who once said:"90% of all sci-fi made is crud." He was right, because most sci-fi focuses on visuals, aliens and futuristic technology, rather than the story. Today it's hard to find a good sci-fi movie.
@McLarenMercedes its true but there are some, my favourite being probably gattaca, then you can take on code 45, i think they were the best ive seen these days, i just bought all of tarkovski's movies for my dad, haven't seen any of them, but im sure going to start by this one
Ha! They must have put together every single frame of running from the movie to try and sell it as an action-flick. Were the audience ever fooled, but then again they got one of the worlds best sf-movies.
As an American, I have the Voyager/Criterion DVD (soon to be replaced by a blu ray edition, featuring blue tinted scenes in place of the original black and white). Where, however, did you obtain this original trailer?
the film certainly owned 1968 Stanley Kubrik's 2001: A space odyssey. that's the whole idea. for those who thought the movie was boring, watch them comparatively. and i bet you rolling on the floor laughing over the space odyssey. it's a part of cold war thingy in my opinion and the shallowness of american film.
@SIngli6 for 2001, the CGI yes it's true. groundbreaking as Avatar does. but solaris led toward the the origin of south park or even monty python IMAO
@scavengerrondz CGI? are fucking high 2001 was released in 1968.... there is no CGI in 2001.... and who cares if solaris led to south park? 2001 led to star wars; actually it influenced all sci-fi after it and changed the medium forever. set new heights. its untouchable.
@blaiserfilms i'm not a movie hater. yes it was ahead of its time. much money was put in it. have you seen solyaris? i recommend it. watch and judge. maybe laugh a little. :)
@scavengerrondz yes i've seen it. i didnt laugh, i dont know what you mean by that... but it is a masterpiece, i loved it. however 2001 had a much greater impact on cinema and please acknowledge that there was in fact NO CGI
My first (and only) Russian film. I noticed that the credits run before the movie instead of after (a good idea). If anyone knows of any more good Russian films I would appreciate it.
I've only seen Stalker by Tarkovskij (a MASTERPIECE), so I don't know him much. I saw however Sodenbergh's version of Solaris, which I liked a lot, but many people told me it doesn't match Takovskij's version and I wouldn't find it hard to believe, honestly. Is this the case?
In 1776, Bishop Ignacy Krasicki–fabulist, poet, and satirist–published the novel The Adventures of Mr. Nicholas Wisdom, the hero of which finds his way to the nonexistent island of Nipu, which is occupied by a utopian society
I rented this film on vhs tape and watched it at midnight by myself. It was fantastic, films like these have low budgets but the story line is beyond anything Hollywood can produce. Written by polish author Stanislaw Lem, who is one of sci-fi's master writers. Anyone who hates this film should ask themselves why Cameron and Soderberg would remake it.
the main character arriving at solaris descends thru cloud towards the space lab(above an ocean), then,at the end, the camera ascends above an island surrounded by ocean-what does this mean + also, what about the symbolic actions of the characters thruout the time in the space lab?
I saw this movie on dvd just yesterday. I have not read the Lem´s story but liked this film very much. I do not think it´s confusing or whatever. Just the original Russian sound in the trailer has surprised me ... our sound was much better - voices above all .. :o)
Ok, i saw Solaris two years ago knowing absolutely fuck all about it before. I was pretty amazed by the film, the music the scenario acting etc. I am certainly not a fan of Hollywood cinema but Solaris was a quite good film. Now the older Russian version looks good as well i have seen the last scene and am looking forward to finding it as a whole from net. My point is enjoy things without comparing, just enjoy good art and stop blabbering.
@nomint it seems like when i put the direct link here something goes wrong. I sent the link to your account. You can have access to it from there. Cheers!
Sorry didnt like it - maybe because I was expecting a sci-fi film. This film exploits the sci-fi genre as a vehicle for a psychodrama that could have been made in any genre. I know the film deals with deep and powerful human psychological issues with novel elegance but I dont care I didnt enjoy it. The acting was great but the plot and script were so detached and abstract that it makes me wonder if everyone who said they enjoyed this is lying just to look intellectual.
FANTASTIC movie! I can't believe George Clooney acted in a shit-ass remake of it. If I were an actor, I wouldn't do a stupid thing like that for all the money in the world.
Hollywood does not understand art, only fast action, grizzly monsters and explosions. They can spend millions of dollars on a movie yet it lacks the feeling that these type of Tarkovskij films have.
I saw the trailer to this movie on TV back in 1972 and it was only until this past summer when I actually got to see it (DVD as birthday present); amazing film!
This trailer works - you have no clue about the movie, but you want to understand it. Depends on the audience you want to reach - certainly the worst thing you can do if you want to entertain the masses, that's for sure.
Why, dumpsky- I'm thinking that your intelligence is lesser than mine, AND that you have no idea who I actually am,and that is why you feel able to be supercilious and rude towards me online.

Only thing Lucas touched that didn' t suck was THX 1138
but , oh yeah he had to update that with CG .
It was OK but he could have just left it as it was .

it's based on book - "Solaris" Stanisław Lem!
so it's the next adaptation, next vision of the world that Lem desrcibe in book.

Tarkovskij is one of the most underrated directors of history.
It's all the fault of the Soviet government, which prevented the film tarkovskij leaving the russia.
If his films were distributed normally, it would have been loved, and rewarded like other European directors as fellini and bergman.
