  • That was awesome Ian.

  • I am confident to say I understood 0% of what just happened, I think its time to learn the basics

  • I love your enthusiasm! Good tutorial.

  • Where's the "How to model, animate and render the ships" tutorial?

I can compost, can't make a ship. I guess I'd need Maya or 3ds right?

  • DODAMAN IT I HAVE A F****G ASSIGNMENT DUE TOMMOROW, and im supposed to F***** Model and compose a 3 minute Movie with 3D elemnts and Frikin Camera tracking F**** SAKEEEEEEEEEE!

ANd I can Seem to find a decent FUCKING Tutorial that Can Help me Fking Texture. I HATE UVW TEXTURING.

The person who Created that Tool is a fucking Retard

  • dude u need to delete your non deformer history in maya then you wont get blemeshs in the textures

  • I've seen many tutorials. Some have been good and some bad. This is the only one that's been funny.

  • Your tutorial is funny and helpful and kept me awake--that's a change of pace from some other tutorials on YouTube. And great job on the Project London, Ian!

  • Past tense of drag is dragged. I drug the ship... otherwise informative.

  • @gvrnrtrrn But you understood it anyways, right? LOL

  • I enjoyed this tutorial. Very informative and it helps that you have a personality.

  • hahahha im not CG savvy but you are freaking hilarious! if ur not on anything at the moment i wanna see what ur like when you are :)

  • wtf??

  • lol, his lango is a lil bit corny, but it helped out alot actually, thanks..

  • I think you have a knack for training as well. Cool stuff

  • do you know what video copilot is?

becuase if you think detonationfilms is awesome?

your gonna be blown away. :)

  • You are an awesome tutorial maker. The jokes are unnecessary and distracting (esp. during the first part). But this is a fantastic tutorial.

  • Nice tutorial, if only i had someone to 3d model for me. :p

  • SICK! awesome tutorial ::D

  • awesome :D it's like the poor man's movie props box so many posibilities and you don't need one single piece of styrofoam :D

  • DAMN.. i wanted to find out how to make it!

  • great tutorial

where did you get this ship model or did you make it yourself?

  • where did u get those sound effects at the beginning

  • You know when I first started AE and watched this, I was like what the hell? How is this even remotely helpful at all? Now I'm watching it, and it actually makes SENSE! Woohoo! Thanks for sharing!

  • Comment removed

  • You have GOT to do more AE tutorials! You are the kind of teacher I used to dream about - one who's hip, witty, droll, shooting out one-liners and loaded with real-world knowledge. Your stuff is really informative and I learned a lot. Please keep it up - you take us waaaay past those boring text manuals and dull CD tutorials. Please do more!

  • holy shit ur a genius, this was awesommmeeeeeee

  • question: did you use google earth for the ground background, if so where is that. also, the past tense of drag is dragged, not "drug"

  • OMG... awesome tips... just what I needed... thanks a lot!

  • thanks :D

  • how did you remove the black background from the detonation films clip? i have the same clip and i cannot remove it

  • Luma key!

  • Change the blending mode to screen or lighten

  • you made me lol and I learned something too. Thanks!

  • Can i download the spaceship anywhere?

  • lol

  • I love this tutorial, but I'd love it even more if you made one about modeling and animating in 3d program so I'd know how to actually get a ship to composite into the movie.

  • Thanks for explaining your awesome work. You da' man!

  • Great tutorial there. especially the relative motion with the clouds.

And i could hear the budgies in the back there....so cute.

  • Imagine trying to do this pre-CGI.

  • great tutorial

    bravo

  • how do u model animate and render the ships or get 1 offline

    (im serius)

  • Great tutorial there dude!

  • You can add Motion Tile for layers with couds.

  • you are the best!

  • Educational AND entertaining! That was awesome! :)

  • how did u zoom in and move across the cloud image?

  • By keyframing the zoom and motion data in After Effects.

  • @mrdodobird i cant find the download for the composted ships plz help and sorry for asking

  • Let me guess... you've been drinking a lot of coffee?

  • @faro0485 or cocaine

  • what a great tutorial ty ty!!

  • Muchas gracias por el tutorial. Muy bueno. I like it.

  • you're hillarious mrdobird! Loved the tut! Excellent, yeah I love AE. I also use Cinema 4D for my stuff. I built a tornado all with After Effects.

    Sweet!

  • actually mrdodobird, heh!

  • Absolute Genius... dont have and cant afford any of the programs you listed, but incredible genius, I cant't do any of this stuff with blender, wax, and lsmaker :p

  • hahaha... best tutorial with or without caps of after effects

  • Dude! I have like, a million cg dvd tutorials, and no matter how awesome informative they are, I always end up zoning out cuz the instructors are so stinking boring. Crackheaded-ness is a virtue they all could benefit from. You kick their collective ass by a wide margin. You should start a side business making your own dvd tutorials, I'd buy them.

  • Nice tutorial. Does combustion have camera shake? i'll have to check, i liked the effect

  • dude! amazing, in that short couple of minutes you taught me so much, lol, how long have you been modeling for? coz thats where i suck, but i think like you do as in terms of ingenuity and do-ability, i think....good work awsome!, *subscibes*

  • It's actually pretty dang interesting...and I have Add so you must be doing something right?

  • "I couldnt watch the vid all the way through for fear that I might have to bach my head against the corner of my desk a few times."

Then by all means, please! Watch the whole thing!

  • Please... "watch the vid all the way through"... you Incredible horror to intelligence. No possible harm could be done. "attempted humor"? that was actually funny, and kinda quirky... Reminds me of me when I am excited about some effects or something I am doing. Seriously... would you rather have him do a dull vader-wannabe voice?

  • @PunyLilgirl vote up.

  • Cool video but I did not understand a word you said. Somebody needs to do a tutorial on how to do this stuff step by step.

  • inspiring!

  • lolz...i dont know why, but your voice reminds me seth cohens voice sometimes...LOL....anyway, funny tutorial..

  • Very nice tutorial! The narration keeps it interesting, like an Andrew Kramer Tutorial! You need some more bad jokes too :p

  • dude I really like the way you narrate the whole tutorial! nice work man...

  • how do you add rotational shake with the wigller>?

  • If you have a 3d camera, you just apply it to it's Z axis (I think. It's one of those axis). You can also just apply the wiggler to the rotation of one of the layers that needs to have it.

  • ..........That looks like the Firefly ship.

  • what 3d software did you use to make the ship?

  • Nicely done! Good work!

  • This is kind of unrelated, but I was surprised on Ideality, that the some parts of the city were 2D. I didn't even realize it was until I watched the commentary. And how much you can actually get away with using a cut and layers and AE.

  • Well, it looks really great but without seeing what you are doing this video does not help me at all. More for confident users I guess.

  • Yeah. I kinda figured a "step by step" thing would 1.) be kinda pointless, because why would everyone want to make that same shot? and 2.) Be too much work to make, and I'm, as a rule, lazy.

  • hey I got a question, you did chromo key or what ever right? and you removed the black color but how come theres still black on the robot ship and the background's black color doesnt get removed?

  • I rendered out the animation with an alpha channel (the secret of all good things), which meant it was "pre-keyed", so I actually didn't really have to do anything. Check to see if your 3d program has "alpha channels" or "Alpha mattes". They're awesome.

  • Hi,

The ship was created in a 3d program (could be maya, 3ds max, lightwave, houdini, softimage xsi, etc... could be the FREE blender!) and then rendered with an alpha channel. The ship is not part of the background, in fact it is a seperate entity.

    ICE

  • AWESOME

  • are you god?.... anyway where did you get the clip of the ship itself?

  • YOU ARE SOOOO AWSOME = HECK YES!!!

  • Can i find you and kiss you!!!???

  • Awsome tutorial, man.

  • Hahaha, dude, I love this. One of the best and most energetic tutorials ever.

  • sweet!!!

  • God that's cool!

  • "they all kinda disappear once you add motionblur = heck yes" lol classic.

  • Oh gah, thank you so much Ian<3

You are touching lifes out there with your tutorial. Probably.

  • Nice tut. Good explanations. Your missile and explosion seem to have got lost a bit in the final comp though. Only thing I want to know is where you get your drugs. :o)

  • Haha. It's a shady little hole-in-the-wall place I like to call "3 am".

  • im not into cg but this is pritty cool, you dont talk too fast. where u going to school?

  • I was taking business at North Seattle Community College, but I stopped. Business just wasn't my thing.

  • Great tutorial, but you didn't show the interface at all, you get a minus point for that.

Oh, and you talk too fast.

  • You have my full permission to recreate the tutorial, but with slower speaking and showing the interface. Heh.

  • Haha, I probably would if I could do that stuff.

    You're the expert here.

  • what's the soft used for modeling?

  • Blender 3d. It's sweet.

  • i know, i use it my self, beats max and maya and anything else in modeling anytime, now if it only had n-gons.. :(

  • how i get model in after effects i have 3ds max

  • Best way to export including alpha channel is export as an RLA, or in 3DSMAX, as an RPF. Set the z-plane and distance and you can then also import the camera position. The tutorial is good, but he does it all in a 2D space. If you push your layers to 3D and spread them out over the Z axis, you can get a more realistic parallax effect.

  • Ooo! Very true. And I actually do have a bit of Z-axis action, I just didn't go into it in the tutorial cause... I forgot.

Although importing 3d camera info and stuff into the compositing program, I'm sure it's possible, I've just never messed with it... intereseting.

  • Try decaf dude :P but nice tutorial :)
