Very good work. This site is never open to railfans. The sound of the engine runing at NOTCH 8 is very interesting. I would like to visit a locomotive motor, but when the unit is at full stop, either at a museum or when National Train Day is celebrated if locomotive or train crews permit so.
What the heck kind of crap is that. Do you even drive a train? If so, what company, what line, what position do you have, what locomotives have you driven, and how many train hijackings have you heard of. Anyone who hijacks a train would be crap out of luck cuz the rail company would "shoot the train" causing it to grind to a hault. So, sir knows so much, what does it even mean to "shoot a train?" Find some things out before you wanna be a jerk and say stupid things lol.
Um in case u havent noticed, ITS NOT ILLEGAL TO BE A RAILFAN. YEA UR RIGHT, I BUILD BOMBS IN MY GARAGE AND PUT EM IN TRAINS. NOT!! ARE U STUPID? U R TE ONE THAT KNOWS NOTHING. Btw. when a ompany "shoots a train" itmeans that they shut down all the train's components that way it stops. That is why u cant hijack a train genius. U don' scare. Plus ask anyone here if I have done anything illegal. The answer will be NO. Go ahead and send national security and get URSELF arrested, genius. Lol.
Oh ok. Movies don't really apply to this matter. I'm not going to argue with you cuz you have no idea what you are talking about and are being extremly immature and overdramatic. Since you hope you don't see me taking pics or vids of your train, what train you drive? Answer me that before you continue with the stupidity.
I honestly don't care about what railway you work for. I was asking because I don't think that you are a railway engineer. No offense, but this is the type of behavior that someone really paranoid would have. I am not gonna argue with you anymore, dude. Say what you want, but I am not a terrorist, but just your average American guy that likes trains and cars. I am also a volunteer firefighter, so why would I endanger people when I am busy SAVING them? Peace out, man.
The term "Shoot The Train" refers to shutting down all locomotives in a consist through the loco's electronic control unit and FRED at the tail of the train. Also the CSX situation had a few things preventing this operation to work. 1. It was downhill most of the trip which made it nearly impossible for the tracton motors to hault the train. 2. The loco brakes and train brakes both failed and the ECU of the lead unit had malfunctioned making it impossible to "shoot it."
They aint crap. They are rated #1 on the charts for the best Express Passenger service diesel in te U.S. They are powered by the mighty 7FDL V16 pushing out (P42DC: 4,250hp (3,875hp in HEP)) (P40 4,000hp (3,500hp in HEP)) and are the first microprocessor driven locomotives to ever hit the rails plus they are extremely comfortable to the engineers. I have not seen any other passenger loco with a better stopping time either. P42DCs can stop like that and can get up n' go really fast.
An Amtrak engineer put it best Ice Berg Acceleration also they are unsafe being able to be put on the ground by something as small as a toe truck, premature traction motor failure, the GP60 from EMD had microprocessors and they were in production before the Genes#its were.
The geep 60 is equipped with a microprcessor, but wasn't microprocessor driven. They are only dubbed unsafe due to the fact that they travel much faster than the average train which makes the impact of a P42 hitting something abit worse.Any Amtrak engineer who says that P42 doesn't have get n' go, needs to make sure that his glasss are on. The P42 can go 0-60 in approx 30-35 seconds. Hills can change this though. If the engineer you talked to runs a line with many hills, that would explain that.
Its the Idle speed, but it was moving. When supplying HEP, a GE will sit at Run 8 turning the generator. When you throttle it up, it excites the generator field for the main traction motors, so a load is put on the engine.
Actually no, from the P42 engine manual I have, they run at run 4 or run 8 depending on HEP load turning the main alternator and HEP generator. You can even see it in the video, the connecting rod between the two.
My statement was in response to BNSF5608's comment, I was saying that F40's use HEP from the prime mover while P42's have seperate generators. I was wrong. I know that video is obviously of a P42, that's not what I was talking about.
Trust me. You can hear the differences of a GE Engine and an EMD Engine and EMDs do not sound anything like the engine in this video. Plus that is a two solenoid horn which is only installed on Amtrak's P42DCs. Also most any Amtrak F40PH has been transformed into a "Cabbage" which is a F40PH with the engine removed to be used as a baggage unit with the cab still intact making the nickname cabbage. So if this were a F40PH owned by Amtrak, you would not hear an engine.
Dude, read my comment again. That's not what I'm saying. I know that's a P24 in the video, I'm not stupid. My earlier statement in response to BNSF5608 was incorrect, as I have acknowledged.
You had to post the video made by you know who... LOL. Still, the GE P-42 is very quiet compared to my favorites, the EMD Geeps & F's.. It was litterally loud enough with those 567's roaring that you couldn't hear yourself think.. (With ear protection). That was a fun ride, thanks Nick. (Doubt it'll happen again).
Ya, not idle, he is moving. Heard horn as well at just after 1.

The engineer is wearing a hard hat. Must've been because he knew he was going to get filmed.
Also, the conductors seat? Try, fireman. Not that we have those anymore but that's what it's called.
You fucking noob.

I never heard of that term before, if it were that simple CSX would have been able to stop that runaway the went over 50 miles.
